MAME vs PS2...which console has the best library

isamu

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Which do you think has the best game library....games that are supported by MAME or games on the Playstation II?

I know some of you are gonna say "MAME is not a console you IDIOT!!! And this is basically an oldschool 2D vs current 3D games debate!!!!" Well I say FUCK YOU! This is a unique comparison between libraries and I wanna know which one you prefer!

It's hard to choose but it all comes down to games like GTA, Tekken, MGS, Devil May Cry, etc. Plus if you take into account the PSX library then it's PS2 for sure.

This is well tricky now that Taito is releasing a ton of arcade games for PS2, but I think I'd still take the MAME option.

You realise you are comparing about 20 years of arcade videogames to the ps2 right?

Yup. Which makes people's choice of the PS2 even more puzzling.

When MAME supports CPS3 and Model 2/3 games, it will have the greatest library of titles ever.

Until then, PS2 has a slight edge because I can play SF3 Third Strike on it.

MAME by a landslide. And I like the PS2 plenty.

I concur wholeheartedly with this response.

I think Isamu just made this thread as a thinly veiled attempt to point the finger at people who have PS2s and laugh.

I'd say MAME sells the Xbox for those of us who want every game we've ever played in one handy location. If it weren't for MAME, there'd be no reason for me to even consider the Xbox. I'll finally bite when Microsoft either adds historically accurate vintage-looking controllers for the Xbox, or they make the current one feel less like a Texas Instrument calculator circa 1978.

Do you have to have the mod chip to get mame on the x-box?

Yes I believe you do. But the about it is, Mame for Xbox runs games post 1995 at crappy/choppy speeds. Marvel vs Capcom runs like at 25fps for example. Not sure about Neo Geo though....

Damn, that's too bad. I would've definitely gotten an X-box if it could've ran those games at a decent framerate. Nothing quite like playing on a regular tv. There must be a way to let my computer display through a regular tv...

Video cards with TV-out is your friend :D

excellent :D. Now, final problem. Is there a way to get four controllers into the computer? Is there like a computer multitap?

Say hello to X-Men! Dungeons and Dragons Arcade!

I use this w/ my PS2 controllers; works brilliantly. I think it's called the SuperJoy 5.

All I have to do is get this superjoy thing, and a videocard with an out to the tv. Then we can say hello to samurai shodown 1-5, fatal fury, metal slug, darkstalkers, street fighter alpha 1-3, x-men: children of the atom, etc. etc. on TV... YESS!!!

As a matter of fact, on a long train ride (Amtrak, ugh) I played Metal Slug and MvC with a bunch of random people on the train on my laptop w/ my PS2 controllers. We had a little mini-arcade going in that snack/dining car for hours.

D@mn, I forgot all about laptops. Yeah, that's definitely a nice setup, with having all of your games on your laptop. It would be great for airplane rides...

Ahhhh.

Yes my g/f and I have played hours of the Magical Drop series, Puzzle Fighter, Puyo Pop, etc. in terminals and sometimes on planes. I actually look forward to long trips b/c I rarely have the time to play MAME otherwise and it's just pure fun, especially when everyone else around you is dying of boredom. On Amtrak it was damn near a lifesaver. In fact I got the whole setup specifically for a couple long train rides I had planned.

PS2 by a country mile. Sure, MAME has 20 years of arcade machines. And surprise! Most of them sucked. And at least some of the good ones ended up on PS2 as well.

I haven't used it personally, but my Apple-lovin' friend has- http://www.macmame.org/

Unfortunately, it isn't very good. 68K emulation (ironically enough) is glitchy in most of the recent versions (meaning that NeoGeo support is spotty at best, among other things), and MacMAME is about a dozen point releases behind the flagship MAME project at any given time.

There are a number of very good emulators on the Mac, but MacMAME isn't one of them.

Heck, they still link to mame.dk in their links section. Welcome to 2002!

Just to clarify here, X-Men (mameox) and both D&D games (fbax) run absolutely perfect on xbox. 4 players works like a champ too if the game supports it. And since someone else brought it up, Neo Geo (fbax) runs perfect on Xbox as well.

I'm not sure what's more silly, the thought of comparing the entire history of arcade games to the limited selection of games on a single console, or the people who actually said they'd rather have the PS2 over said entire history of arcade games.

I'm not sure what's more sad, the fact that you can't read, the fact that you believe more quantity is always the same as more quality, or your lack of respect for the opinions of others.

While you're entitled to your opnion, there NO WAY that "most" of the 20 years of arcade games supported by mame sucks! I'd say 25% to 30% of them suck AT THE MOST. The remaining percent are HELLA FUN and are absolute classic!! C'mon dude think about it.

Here's the thing though.....as much as I love Mame's enourmaous library, I dunno how I could live without Ridge Racer V, VF4 Evo, THPS 3 & 4, THUG 1 and 2, GT4, and the ridiculous amount of RPGs. It's a really hard decision if I take that into consideration. The Logitech FF wheel and GT4 makes it REALLY difficult!

But then....I dunno if I could live without the Samurai Shodown series, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, The Metal Slug series, Puzzle Fighter, Raiden Fighters, X-men vs SF, OutRunners, Alien vs Predtor, Nintendo Punchout, or Violent Storm either :)

Ok, why don't you help the guy out then? Like I said, I've never used MacMAME, I was just getting the ball rolling and hoping people w/ Mac experience would come in and pick it up rather than just saying "MacMAME sux," about which frankly I don't give a shit, but I guess if there's one thing you can count on GA for it's pointless criticism without offering any help. Way to go!

Most games I've tried run fine on MacMAME, and GeoMAME runs Neo-Geo games well.* What I find inexcusable is that there doesn't seem to be a good Genesis emulator for OS X - both Generator and Genesis Plus have major compatibility issues.

*I have had trouble with a few games, though - Gunlock/Rayforce is barely playable and Outfoxies unplayable, both due to framerate issues.

I can verify that not only is this false (MvC plays at perfect speeds, with any filter settings, especially true if you're using Final Burn on Xbox.) but Neo Geo games play very well on the Xbox, both Neo CD (which acts like the original console) and regular Neo arcade or home console.

Thought about it. Played it. Most of it sucks. Seriously, while there are some great arcade games out there and nobody's denying that, there's a whole host of trash as well. And a lot of the stuff that was good at the time hasn't aged well. There are a handful of truly timeless classics, a whole host of inferior ripoffs, and stacks of titles that are just plain pants. 10 yard fight, anyone? Yet another Pacman clone? It may have been fun at the time, but how much time can you really stand to put into Gorf today? Really? And if you're not with me yet, then the killer blow - Street Fighter The Movie The Game. Whose bright idea was that?

And that's the real killer. Arcade games are designed to take your money and move you on, which just doesn't work for certain types of game. It's all about the quick arcade fix. RPGs? Forget 'em. Don't go looking to MAME for intricately plotted action adventure games. Halfway decent sports titles? Not a chance. PS2 (and other consoles, of course) can do both.

And a fair number of those run on PS2 to some extent. Samurai Shodown V, various MK incarnations including MK3 on PSX, Metal Slug (also X and 3-5), Puzzle Fighter... You're probably out of luck if you want a Nintendo Punchout port on PS2, though. Best of both worlds.

Hmm, you may have a fairly thought provoking point there :)....

Yeah, the MacMAME project has an ancient site and is way behind. I think they're shaking out a beta of 0.88. (The main Win32 MAME project is up to 0.95.)

I wish I could, but there's not much to suggest. Older MacMAMEs can run some of the broken games, but somewhat poorly (because's running in a Classic blue box), but they won't do newer games. GeoMAME and CPSMAME can run some of the games MacMAME can't, but they're long behind both the main MAME and MacMAME projects, and there isn't anywhere to actually download them since emuHQ closed up.

You can keep a copy of 0.66 and a copy of 0.77 and try and find GeoMAME and CPSMAME somewhere, but that's a lot of emulators for a some iffy compatibility and a lot of mixing and matching.

It's just a caveat for anyone who expects to get the same performance from MacMAME. It just ain't gonna happen.

Oh I see, I thought you were just being a smart-ass. ;)

Anyone know of a reputable site to buy the super joy 5 from? I looked at a couple through google, but I don't know how much they can be trusted.

i vote for Mame.

I use it on BeOS, it's now stuck at 0.80 but was in advance to the Mac version for a long time and was marginally slower that winmame32 for windows.

I expect a new version as www.beemulated.net is back up. kinda neat to have all the game indexed by file attribute.
