From news alerts I got from Le Monde: Airport evacuated, air traffic "completely interrupted"

English-language article: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-39314250

A man has been shot dead after grabbing a soldier's gun at Orly airport in Paris, French officials say.
He was killed by the security forces in a shop after seizing the weapon in the airport's southern terminal.
The airport has been shut down after what the authorities said was an extremely serious incident and passengers not allowed to disembark.
A security operation is continuing with bomb disposal experts involved and a search for any possible accomplices.
Police also want to make sure the dead man was not wearing an explosive belt.
No-one else was hurt in the incident.

[...]

Officials say the man approached a group of soldiers patrolling the airport and made off with the gun into a shop.

[...]

According to Le Monde, he was killed as he was heading towards a McDonald's inside the terminal.

I'm not quite sure which gun he stole, or if it was loaded. In the past, "Vigipirate plan" soldiers famously carried their FAMASes unloaded, but I'm not sure if it's different for the new "Sentinelle operation" soldiers.

After trying.

Edit : apparently he stole the gun.

But I heard Military patrolling have their famas without the magazine in (they do in higher security alerts, maybe this one had a magazine) and even so, the gun wasn't loaded...

Maybe he just didn't know how to operate the gun after he stole it

This part is interesting as well:

Meanwhile a police officer was shot and injured during a vehicle check in the northern suburbs of Paris. The suspect then escaped in a vehicle.

Police have not confirmed if the incident was linked to the incident at Orly, but French media reports said that a car used by the suspect was later found abandoned at the airport.

It's kind of crazy that out of the three events flagged as potential terrorist attacks over the past two days, this would be the one with the least victims (besides the attacker).
And this one sounds likely to be ISIS.

Those soldiers patrol in threes from what I've seen. I wonder how he got the gun without being shot.

Probably a grab and run, if they have to load the guns first he might get around a corner before they're ready to shoot. Or they didn't want to shoot because of the many people around that could get hit. Obviously they can't just shoot anybody that gets close to them and by then he could probably surprise them with the grab.

And someone tried to send an explosive in the mail earlier this week.

I'm in fucking Paris this week and I fly out tomorrow. Can we not have this kind of shit happen, please?

The bomb letter was aimed specifically at the IMF and Schlaube in Germany. It is quite clear where it came from, Greek extremists. They are not a group that will target random people.

The two are entirely unrelated though.
It's a good thing you're flying tomorrow, it's probably safer as security will be on higher alert.

What we know for the moment:

Man was 39, he was known by the justice for theft and drug offences. He may has been radicalized this last years but it's not clear yet.

He's the same man who lightly injured a policeman earlier today during a control. He then ran away, left his car, carjacked another one and went to Orly. He grappled a woman soldier to get her weapon but got killed by her team mates.

I don't know all the details but i heard he tried to grab a gun from a security guard, failed and then hid in a store.

Sounded like killing him was a bit too much but who knows.

Well if he failed to take the weapon from the military woman then he might have been unarmed. On the other hand he did have a self defense gun earlier in the day when he wounded a policeman during a control.
Better wait for the investigation to know exactly how it happened.

For the moment, Europe is lucky that most of those guy are stupid as fuck. If we get smart guy we are screwed.

I'm pretty sure we had more organized attacks not too long ago. The fact that the recent attacks were incompetent lunatics is either a sign that skilled terrorists are keeping a low profile, or that current prevention methods work and make it more difficult to plan an elaborate attack.

Or the skilled terrorists are already dead

Our securities forces is completely unadapted to lone wolf crazy guy

How exactly do you defend against lone wolf crazies? Armed soldiers on every block?

You need security services to disrupt large organizations and involved plots, you have to make it hard to get your hands on weapons and explosives, but at the end of the day we need to accept the fact that this isn't Minority Report and that we can't catch every single lunatic before they act.

The Lamp just demonstrated how no matter what major event happens, someone will enter a thread about it claiming they're personally affected by it and will possibly come into harm from it.

You'll be okay. I highly doubt any of these attacks will involve you and you're apparently leaving Paris tomorrow. Freak out if you want and start questioning every "suspicious-looking" person you see though, that will really help. Maybe. Or you'll just look like a crazy person who should be wearing a hat made of aluminum foil.

Same. "Oh shit there was a shooting in Toronto? Fuck man, I was in Vancouver 2 months ago."
Basically.

Isn't that the point of a forum? To share something more personal? It would be kind of boring if everyone just talked about this from an objective perspective.

And no doubt that this event will still be on everyone's mind at the airport tomorrow

A lot of people see news like this as some universe that's isolated from their own, so when you see news about a place that you've been to it starts to hit close to home. It's kinda like seeing yourself in the background of a news report or in the crowd in a wide shot of a sporting event, except instead of excitement you get fear.

I wouldn't be surprised if the soldier actually let go of the rifle and got out of the way so his or her buddies could safely fire.

Your projections are pathetic. This hardly put a damper into my day. The cold weather was worse for my picnic. I was just expressing lighthearted frustration and genuine concern. Airports and train stations are places the public have a right to concern themselves with, and I leave on a plane tomorrow. Do you not remember Ataturk airport earlier this year? And had the police not shot him down, this could have turned into another terrorist attack (something that happens in Paris at least every year) so don't start dismissing this as irrational to be concerned about, because I don't have the patience to listen to people downplay those concerns.

I never even implied I would do this? You're insane and going on my ignore list.
