It's really weird that on of Superman's recurring themes is that people can be better yet none of his villains are capable of reforming. Comics Doomsday reformed because he developed intelligence. That was retconned though.

Same for Batman. bah

Well it could be Metallo, Bizarro, General Zod, Darkseid, Doomsday, etc,. Just a real good ol fight against a villian that can take a punch by Superman thats all we Superman fans ask, well that's what I ask as a Superman fan, sure other types of action is great too but we already had that other type in Returns, saving people from natural disasters or things like that gets boring after a while.

Yeah, I can see that demand. Even the original Donnerverse movies only had one decent fight scene in them across four (arguably five) movies. Still, I like seeing different types of danger and all.

the alternative is usually Superman Lifts Heavy Object

Superman Lifting A Plane was pretty damn cool. The Earthquake scene had some neat moments too (the heat vision against the glass, etc). I always dig seeing super heroes do their job as opposed to setting terrorists on fire or whatever.

Lex reformed in
Superman All Star.

Smallville, as flawed as that show could be, had some strong scenes every now in then around this theme. Clark would actually talk people down during fights the older her got, which felt very Superman, and make them realize they could redeem themselves.

The moment in Superman Returns during the earthquake scene where CG Routh casually catches a guy, sets him on the ground and flies off in one swift motion was one of my favorite moments.

as the climax to the film, this is not what i want to see. maybe in another scene to establish his abilities, but watching a guy strain to lift something has to be EXTREMELY well done to not pale in comparison to a good fight scene.

Wonder Woman is the only one who can reform villains. With love, compassion, and Amazonian rehabilitation camps.

True. It just makes me wish it happened more often in the comic universe though. :P

Yup, and I can understand why they don't use it all the time. It would get boring. Someday though, they'll have to explain what Batman actually stands for when Joker kills hundreds and gets to live.

also: IIRC Riddler and Harvey Dent were temporarily rehabilitated a few years back

great now i want to be a Wonder Woman villain

Well, the Joker is supposed to be the opposite of him, in many ways, and represent a challenge morally. If Batman "fixed" him he wouldn't be much of a villain, just like Luthor, Magneto.

Setting Lex up for the sequel is the right idea. We need to prove Superman is strong and alpha as fuck in this one, see: curb-stomping 3 demi-gods. It really sets the stage how calculating and scheming Lex is if he's able to Superman's downfall. Using Lex first just makes Superman seem completely weak and stupid.

I prefer the idea of a Luthor character who is never really the MAIN antagonist of any movie. He's got a role, but it's always as a behind-the-scenes mover-and-shaker. His antagonism is like constant background radiation. Nobody can ever pin anything on him, and he never gets so involved that you can tell he had anything to do with it, BUT YOU JUST KNOW IT WAS HIM.

I want that Lex, spread across multiple movies. I don't want just one movie where he's trying some shitty scheme that Superman blows up and then Lex just goes to jail. If this Superman is one that we are a people are going to identify with closely, I'd like his greatest enemy to essentially be the selfish, ineffective, myopic "leadership" that we tend to characterize our government's worst aspects as possessing.

Luthor can be that.

2 Minutes then for the new trailer:

I think that's what he has always been characterized as in good writing. Luthor stories go to pot once he puts on the power suit. Then its no different from Supes vs <Insert Brawny Villain Here>. That McGuinness drawing referenced above was always such a comic book way to end Luthor's term as President. They put Luthor in the White House. A solid move since it's a natural extension of his business background. But no one seems to be good at figuring out how to END Luthor stories. They all devolve into fisticuffs. Even some of my favorites:
Justice League Unlimited S1( Luthor is essentially removed from the story and replaced with Brainiac in a Luthor skin)
and
All Star Superman.

I want to take you two guys to lunch.

I always thought Luthor was a great metaphor for those in high power who've convinced the public that they care for their welfare, while they only really care to manipulate & feel superior. Look at any CEO, including the likes of Steve Jobs- people would bend over backwards for him.

Fuck YES!

According to that site they don't list the seconds and listed the previous trailer as 2 minutes too, so the new one could be 2 minutes and 50 seconds for all we know.

:D

I would love it if Luthor was a villain in the same way that Thomas Edison was in The Prestige. Completely unseen and only mentioned a few times, but still manages to have this menacing presence.

Yeah, I'm thinking when the trailer hits I might just go on blackout because it's pretty much guaranteed to blow most of the film.

Gonna be hard to resist though.

I guess its a question of where you get your enjoyment from on first watch. Is it HOW the story is being told, or is it mostly that you're being surprised by it?

I can know everything about a movie going in and it won't really affect how good the movie is, really. If that train of thought actually arrived anywhere important, nobody would adapt anything for the screen.

But that's me.

Sure you can say that knowing what happens doesn't make the film unenjoyable, but I think it's pretty hard to argue that going in blind into ANY movie doesn't make for a better experience than when you know what to expect. The virgin film experience is always the best experience.

I disagree. There are many a movie where the film ascends into another level on rewatch.

Again, it's a question on where you put your premium when it comes to the moviegoing experience. That's not to say I spoil myself for everything, nor am I saying I DON'T get annoyed when people spoil things I wasn't asking about. But once that genie is out of the bottle, by the time I'm sitting down and watching the movie - it doesn't really matter. The movie has to work on its own merits, aside from the marketing and aside from pre-release buzz and bullshit.

And honestly, most of the greats didn't become greats on first viewing. They had to hold up on rewatch. They had to have more rewards.

As in life - the virgin experience is never as good as you wish it was. :)

It's been like this since 1978, really. Before then, the S did just stand for "Superman." Marlon Brando suggested it be a family crest, and from then on, most writers have treated it as such.

Because at some point along the lines of comic books and various adaptations, someone decided to make it the symbol for the house of El. It had nothing to do with that originally, did it? Introduced later like Luthor, Kryptonite, etc?

EDIT: Welp, beaten badly.

I'm really curious to find out if they actually speak Kryptonian in the film. And to that end, I'm curious to hear what Kryptonian sounds like.

I have no idea why, but I always imagined it sounding like Scottish Gaelic.

Yes, but I'm talking specifically about the first watch. I agree with what you're saying about rewatches.

Just because you guys were talking about the shield, this is apparently a line from the new trailer...
"It's not an 'S'. Where I’m from it’s a symbol of hope."

Kind of pulling it from Birthright.

Also Cavill just confirmed to be a presenter at the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday.

English accents. You know its going to happen.

Then you're almost to enlightenment, Sculli!

Once you stop treasuring the first viewing like a pristine thing that means more than all subsequent viewings, you'll be there! A land where blood pressure is lower, and disappointment isn't so sharp and cutting.

Dammit Simo.

I think we've got our wires crossed. I'm not saying the first viewing is always going to be better than rewatches/second/third/fourth viewings. I'm saying that an untainted first viewing will ALWAYS be better then a viewing when you know what to expect.

Catching Fire trailer is debuting there. Perhaps Man of Steel, or at least a preview of it, debuting as well?
