Just because you guys were talking about the shield, this is apparently a line from the new trailer...

Kind of pulling it from Birthright.

Also Cavill just confirmed to be a presenter at the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday.

I love that part in Birthright. When he is studying the history of Krypton he says he thinks its a family crest but it was more than that. Wars were fought over it, cities built on it. It was a symbol of hope.

Dammit Simo.

I think we've got our wires crossed. I'm not saying the first viewing is always going to be better than rewatches/second/third/fourth viewings. I'm saying that an untainted first viewing will ALWAYS be better then a viewing when you know what to expect.

Aw shit, sorry man didn't mean to spoil anything. Just getting caught up in the hype. I'll make sure to spoiler tag everything going forward. Sorry mate.

Peace offering:

Still disagree. From personal experience, this has not been the case. But I'm probably wired differently than you are when it comes to story and storytelling.

It's not even story. It's from an experiential level as well. I'd rather not see an image or piece of music beforehand either. Malick's films aren't at all defined by their plots, yet I'd rather not know them or see anything before them lest the experience of seeing his new film be lessened.

Seeing something completely blind is like a breath of fresh air. But obviously I still hunt trailers and the like down because I'm a weak man. But there is a limit to which I'm willing to familiarise myself with a film before seeing it.

This reminded me of back in 2006 when Christian Bale one "Best Hero" for Batman Begins at the MTV Movie Awards, with the award being presented by Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey. I was a frequent poster on the (now defunct) bluetights.net forums in the year or so leading up to the release of Superman Returns, and man, people went photoshop-crazy with this image:

OMG GAIZ BATMAN/SUPERMAN MOVIE GONNA HAPPEN :D :D

30 subjects. Wow. Huge sample pool. Guess I better change my mind based on my 25 years of personal experience.

I was like you, once.

I'm ten years older.

SOMETHING happened :)

Anyway, I doubt this 3 minutes of footage is going to really "spoil" anything, being as theres probably another 117 minutes of movie to go along with it. Plus, Marketing really has to sell people on WHY they should buy a ticket. Uplifiting music and symbolism can only go so far.

And yeah - most crowds don't seem to care if a movie was "spoiled" for them in the trailer. The details get fuzzy the farther away from the trailer you get, and all they remember is that the trailer was "cool." That principle's remained the same for awhile now - go check out trailers for films from the 40s to the 70s/80s, when trailer cutting became its own art.

Same kind of reasoning people have had before. Prometheus trailers were less than three minutes and managed to blow the whole film. All it takes is cutting the peak moments of each scene together to blow them all consecutively. Most recent example is Oblivion.

This is my idea of a recent good trailer.

surprisingly, a disjointed series of images tends to do nothing for the people who are unaware of the film's plot. and that one in particular gives a poor impression of the movie's tone.

God Prometheus trailers were a clusterfuck. Thankfully I've not seen hardly any of the Oblivion promotional materials.

yup. and reading the description that guy posted, it kind of sounds just like that. lol

whatever, I just hope its a quality film

I have a feeling of what they will show in the final trailer. Mostly though they will give more of an idea for the story. So far, its been pretty light on details.

Prometheus' faults didn't come because the trailer outlined the plot. In fact, on the list of problems I had with the film, its marketing is rather low.

Most of the problems I've EVER had with a film are with the film, and not its marketing, or how much it "spoiled."

Again, just to clarify: I'm not saying everyone should be spoiled on everything at all times. I understand the annoyance/anger at having something you didn't know revealed in a way that is, shall we say, less-than-optimal. I'm just disagreeing that the marketing matters all that much once you're in the theater. At that point, the movie has to do the heavy lifting. The trailer didn't blow Prometheus. Prometheus just blew. :)

Basically, for me, it was a matter of looking at WHY I was getting so pissed at "spoilers," and whether they were really affecting my enjoyment of the movie.

I'm sorry for the sidetrack, guys.

edit: And yeah, the Dragon Tattoo trailer was fucking great. Loved it.

I remember liking that one, but the giant flashing text part was bad.
I was in the theater and the screen was so big that I couldn't read it before it flashed away, haha.

I'm going to use this conversation as another excuse to post Superman Return's teaser trailer. Talk about perfection. The gorgeous visuals, Brando's God speech, John William's classic score...I'm almost glad Superman Returns even happened simply because it birthed something so awesome.

The problem with the trailer is what made it so great -- John Williams' classic score and Brandon's speech -- had nothing to do with anything Singer did. You take those two things away and add a musical piece from the actual film and it's a fairly bland trailer. As much as I loved it when it first came out, and still do, it's just so indicative of the movie's problems.

Disagree completely. The visual images that painted a portrait of Superman through hints at his backstory, the iconic curl, the silhouette of a man rising above the clouds in the sun. Those images alone work like etching of a legend - which Brando's voice-over and Williams' score emphasize. It is an absolutely brilliant teaser.

They are both good teasers, I wasn't really trying to start up shit. I think that Brandon/John William remix works with the MoS teaser too but it works way better for the Superman Returns teaser, after all it was edited around it. Returns has some great shots but so does MoS... I want this movie to be great. It is hitting all the right notes with me.

No matter your thoughts on Returns, it honestly had one of the best teasers ever put together.

Seriously, who here didn't get butterflies during "They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be."?

The only thing that has made me feel warmer and fuzzier is Crowe's teaser for MoS.

"You will give the people an ideal to strive toward."

That's some inspiring shit.

Edit: ^^ Fucking LOL. Thank you for proving my point.

There are a few moments in there where the music and the narration really sync with the visuals, but obviously the trailer images weren't synced properly. Everything that I heard -- and saw through a shitty cam version -- of the Comic-Con teaser really blew away the original Superman Returns. It just shows how much music can really make or break a production.

Considering the Man of Steel teaser and the Superman Returns teaser are essentially 80% the exact same teaser, the more interesting exercise would be to put "Journey to the Line" or some other piece of Zimmer music under the "Returns" trailer and see if it still works.

Because I personally think the reason that Returns teaser works has nothing to do with the images, and has everything to do w/ Brando's voice and "The Planet Krypton" cue.

What does Jor-El mean when he says "But in time they will join you in the sun"?

That humanity will follow Superman's example and eventually rise to be equal to him. That's why he says Kal will "help them accomplish wonders." Superman's legacy will be making the world a better place and inspiring its people to be better.

What does Jor-El mean when he says "But in time they will join you in the sun"?

My assumption is that he thinks Kal is going to be the best (what father doesn't hope for such things?) and that while humanity might fear him at first they'll eventually come around.

That Comic-Con teaser was pretty spoilerific, all things considered. They unloaded a lot of imagery we might not see in any of the three worldwide trailers.

It's a direct reference to All-Star Superman, Jor-El is just being poetic about his son's future and his importance to mankind.

The page after that is one of my favorites in All-Star Superman. I could hear the John Williams theme in my head when I read it.

Darkseid should be saved for the Justice League movie (whenever that happens). Dude is evil incarnate and he and Apokalips should be too big a threat for even Superman to handle alone.

As for Lex, I say it's high time his battle armor made its debut. I'm tired of Kryptonite too, but damn it. It's Lex Luthor. A Superman trilogy without him as primary foe at least once wouldn't feel right.

I'd love to see a take on Mongul. Or even Mxy. Fuck Doomsday though. Fuck his entire existence.

Doomsday is good, but not good for movies.

However... This picture is badass...

lexluthor060qlww.jpg

no, that was the begininng of the end of the good Luthor character and back to the superfriend's version.

Faora's gonna use krypton martial arts so Superman's gonna have to learn how to fight. That's kinda new.

Torquasm-Vo I believe the martial arts of krypton is called.

Doomsday would be a huge mistake, honestly.

He's a shit character, always has been. Fuck, use Mongul if you wanna use a giant alien bruiser. At least Mongul has a personality.

Death of Superman was a garbage story. I've never understood why DC/WB keeps trying to go back to that well. It's puddle-deep.

what? no it wasn't. it was good for it's time, specially Funeral for a friend. that had a lot of powerful and poignant scenes.

I prefer the idea of a Luthor character who is never really the MAIN antagonist of any movie. He's got a role, but it's always as a behind-the-scenes mover-and-shaker. His antagonism is like constant background radiation. Nobody can ever pin anything on him, and he never gets so involved that you can tell he had anything to do with it, BUT YOU JUST KNOW IT WAS HIM.

I want that Lex, spread across multiple movies. I don't want just one movie where he's trying some shitty scheme that Superman blows up and then Lex just goes to jail. If this Superman is one that we are a people are going to identify with closely, I'd like his greatest enemy to essentially be the selfish, ineffective, myopic "leadership" that we tend to characterize our government's worst aspects as possessing.

Luthor can be that.

Luthor is better and smarter than any politician.
believe it or not Luthor really does care to elevate and improve humanity, he just wants the full and sole credit for doing that elevation, he's the second smartest man in the world and he is the classic bootstrap story. I would love someone like Luthor for president.
Luthor/Ross 2016 (except i'm not too thrilled with his kill Superman platform)

I think that's what he has always been characterized as in good writing. Luthor stories go to pot once he puts on the power suit. Then its no different from Supes vs <Insert Brawny Villain Here>. That McGuinness drawing referenced above was always such a comic book way to end Luthor's term as President. They put Luthor in the White House. A solid move since it's a natural extension of his business background. But no one seems to be good at figuring out how to END Luthor stories. They all devolve into fisticuffs. Even some of my favorites:
Justice League Unlimited S1( Luthor is essentially removed from the story and replaced with Brainiac in a Luthor skin)
and
All Star Superman.

it was written by Jeph Loeb, what did you expect?

I want to take you two guys to lunch.

I always thought Luthor was a great metaphor for those in high power who've convinced the public that they care for their welfare, while they only really care to manipulate & feel superior. Look at any CEO, including the likes of Steve Jobs- people would bend over backwards for him.

no, Luthor is great. he's a great American.
Luthor/Ross 2016!

Luthor is at his best when he's trying to prove himself more intelligent than Superman is strong by outdoing Superman at saving the world while simultaneously tearing down Superman.
