Man of steel teasers & trailers are still so good!! And then the movie...how??

Cretinously credulous
I was watching Superman (1978) and that movie has so much heart. It knows and understands Superman, and thats what makes it so good. The original teasers for Man of Steel gave me the same feels. They were amazing!

"They will stumble, they will fall. In time, they will join you in the sun."
"They will kill him." "How? He will be a God to them."
"Can I just keep pretending I am your son?"
The imagery.
The flying cape.
The flight itself.
Voice-overs of both Jor-El and Jonathan Kent.
The music.

I thought they were going to make a perfect Superman movie. I was so excited! It seemed perfect!
And then the movie came. It coulve been good, so good! If only Snyder knew how to shoot emotional scenes, to have proper structured story. If only the editor knew how not to make the movie feel a disjointed mess. If only they knew how to give scenes emotional weight.
Damn it 1978 movie's heart with this movie wouldve been gold.

Trailers focus on visuals, music and carefully chosen quotes.

Movies need to have actual content: a story, characters, arcs, ... great visuals, music and some cool quotes can't hide the lack thereof

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.
I'd be more impressed with these trailers if the Superman Returns teaser didn't exist.

Well I'm pretty sure the misgivings about the movie came the moment Pa Kent uttered "maybe" in one of those trailers. Little did we know that it was indicative of the entirety of what ails MoS.

Basically this.
The aspects that make up a good trailer and a good movie are decidedly different even if there is some overlap in the skills required to create both.

MoS has the GOAT superhero trailers man. Yet manages to be one of of my most hated super hero films.

But this has been discussed so many times, I just don't have the energy to do it again.

I don't know OP, I wasn't feeling the trailer when I saw it. Something felt off, it feels too dramatised and full of wordy word of wisdom for no good reason.

I liked the movie. Great action sequences, an interesting take on Superman, Faora kicking all asses and then some, Hans Zimmer's majestic score, awesome opening sequence in Krypton.

My only real gripe is Lois. Didn't like her.

Man of Steel feels like two films stitched together.

The first is a Nolan-penned origin story.

Once Nolan had fulfilled his contractual obligation he handed in his draft and said "there you go, I've setup the basic premise and Superman has just learnt to fly. Snyder can sort out Act 2."

And that's where the film descends into "CRAH" and "BOOM" and general stupidity and the deaths of thousands of bystanders.

Trailer 3 is so damn good. The music and how it builds up.

Im was so hyped after this trailer. The movie wasnt bad. But it wasnt super good either. I think its snyders best movie with 300 anyway

I enjoyed it. Would have preferred The Incredible Hulk style and skipped the origin but it was good as far as origins go. I also would have preferred to see a continuation of Superman Returns. Still miss the Reeves/Donner and yes, the Routh/Singer film series but MoS felt like a Superman for the new generation of superhero films, I don't feel it is nearly as dark as people say.

Man of Steel had problems but it wasnt about superman parts imo.
It was other parts like Pa kent, mindless stupid cgi battle at intro, mindless stupid battle end end.

those things. also better pacing, better cut and more tight story would make a great film. Superman scenes, clark scenes are good me thinks

the movie is even better. Up there with Winter Soldier, Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2.
Great story, fantastic action, and no slo-mos.

If we judged Snyder on his trailers instead of his films he would be one of the most beloved film makers in the industry. Watchmen and 300 were equally as impressive in trailer form but had a lot to be desired as films

To be fair I think MoS is the best DCCU movie so far
Which is not saying much
. I liked some of the action in this move which means given the right director we could've gotten a good superman movie.

ERMYGERD!
Zack Snyder is a director of moments. And moments work for trailers. Moments without a buildup to said moments in a movie so not work.

Now that we have BvS and Suicide Squad, in retrospect, Man of Steel wasn't that bad...

Nah BvS is so much better

Two things I'll give man of Steel though was Michael Shannon's Zod was really good and the soundtrack was great too

But the script is dogshit. Just robot dialogue that doesn't sound right most of the time. I think the snyder dc movies have pretty good ideas though so I found BvS to be an improvement since the dialogue was considerably fixed and it looked better too (and had Batman in it)

It's better than suicide squad though. But so are my bowel movements....

I didn't have an issue with the way superman was dealt with though or the Kent world-view, just really don't think that script holds up. Goyer sucks

I really think the rampant dislike of Man of Steel is a bit of a meme at this point. I understand the complaints (Tone, pacing, character portrayal, etc.) but I genuinely do not see what makes it so shit. Maybe (probably?) helps that I'm not a comic-book person so I didn't have much in the way of expectations for a portrayal of Superman. My prior experience consisted of the Justice League animated series on Cartoon Network haha.

Yeah the 2nd trailer was absolutely masterful so it's a pity the film turned out as bad as it did. Saying that though as awful as MoS is it still ended up the best of the DCEU films. That tells you everything really.

While the movie wasn't great it was still pretty good. I mean I enjoyed the first half quite a lot, just after that the movie really did fall apart, especially in pacing.

Still a way better movie than crap like Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman TC.

That part in the trailer where he crouches down then flies and the main theme kicks in is perfect, then you see it in the movie and it's turned into this goofy scene where he falls halfway up, annoys me every time I see it.

Snyder specialises in "moments", not scenes.

Yep, that video explained it perfectly for me. Add 'seemingly deep' dialogue to those 'moments', and you get a great trailer. Whereas the BVS trailer had generic LOTR monster and lines like 'tell me, do you bleed?' so I never had high hopes for the movie to begin with.

Then in the end, MOS turned out 'ok' to me, while BVS a 'ugh'. What does this mean?

Can we talk about how horrible pa Kent is for a moment; tells son to let kids die, supports son hiding who he is, gives the worst advice and kill a couple of horses putting the Lang farm out of business forcing the langs on the street all so he could have hero cake!
