I really enjoyed Man of Steel and got it on bluray, but it is one of those films that hurts to watch because I can't stop thinking about it's poor execution in areas. It's narrative structure follows a pattern way too similar to Batman Begins (great film) without hitting much of the emotional punches.
One that always sticks out to me: the bus rescue scene. This is a flashback randomly triggered by Clark seeing a bus. The point-of-view of this whole scene is through Clark's eyes, which did lead to that should-have-been great moment his father tells him that maybe he should have let the kids die. But that moment had no weight, at least not compared to what it seemed like it would in the trailer. What if we held off on that flashback though? Louis is trying to find Superman, and later finds her way to the restaurant where the one bully from the flashback works. We don't actually see them talk, and we're just to assume he tells her the story of the flashback as we had already seen it. But I can't help but think how much more powerful that scene would have been if it was actually told through the eyes of the bully. We wouldn't have witnessed the flashback until Louis sits with him, and she is walked through it all. Maybe the story could begin earlier, with kids picking on Clark at school and him not reacting. Then eventually get to the bus scene, picking on Clark, them going off the road, and Clark saving their asses.
Just one of many small adjustments I think could have had an overall positive impact. I still love Man of Steel though.
