Mobile Suit Gundam - The Origin Volume 1
This was overall a good read and satisfying purchase. The entire package you get here feels great and I'm proud to have it stand tall in my collection of manga. Though keep in mind my impressions of it is from a person who's seen very little of Gundam in general.
The plotting - and by that I mean how the panels are sequenced - is brilliant, though if it copies the show I would assume that the panels would flow very naturally. The art is top notch, and the setting is pretty fleshed out
My only problem is that while the setting is very grounded in realistic concepts, there are moments that make me go "What the fuck?" For example how Amuro is able to "sense" Char before he even makes his attack, how apparently being stunned by how pretty someone is affects a female's resolve to shoot someone (very sexist imo), and just other little things like that. I also don't understand how Amuro, a kid who has no combat experience or training, can take down so many well-trained soldiers or I assume are well-trained cause they're older men. The book even calls BS on this when the captain has his ship detained, but it doesn't do much with it as they continue to use Amuro for the Gundam seat without notice.
With that being said the closing moments of the volume with everyone looking at Earth was rather nice. It's good to get a break from the chaos of war and this moment reflected that at the perfect time. Good feel-good moment to end the volume on, only to give us a twist and introduce a new character at the end.
I give it a solid B+. The presentation of the package is gorgeous, but the story could be better.
