Map Comparison: Burnout Paradise Map isn't 200 sq miles

I was watching one of these maps like that:

large-video-game-worlds2.jpg

In every map/article I saw, Burnout Paradise map was 200 sq miles for the author.

200 sq miles is a square of 14.14 miles par side or 22.5 km

this is burnout paradise map:

this is what 22.5 km looks like in a real city (london)

I didn't player burnout paradise retail version, but only the demo, but if you look at the map you can see how a ship (200-300 m usually) is big compared to gta san andreas or oblivion.

I'm not sure about the real size of Far cry 2, i think it's too small for being 5,57 miles.

If you played Nightfall or LOTR Online can you tell me how the map is so big? what's inside?

it would be interesting to make a real comparison despite what the pr said at the game's launch.

(or at least share a correct version of this map)

I have this feeling, back when that first image appeared on the net a while ago, that these maps weren't properly scaled to each other.

That would be awesome if somebody could compile all these "open-world" games.

This one is missing the Stalker Games, risen, gothic, and etc.

And wow GTA:SA felt so much bigger than that lol

EDIT: WTF, if you don't care for this stuff then move along, no need to taunt.

EDIT:2

maybe making comparison with roads, cars, buildings etc.. it's difficult to have correct measurements but we could have a good approximation.

how thefuck can you measure that?

The proper way would be to find common objects within the worlds, vehicles or people, and compare them, tediously, by moving very slowly and carefully one length, and noting that, through the whole length of the map.

That or reverse engineer the game, extract the assets and measure it that way.

We need people like you in this world lefantome, don't be discouraged by anyone hating on your topic.

Daggerfall is fucking ludicrous. Goodness. They need to get back to making TES games that massive.

:rotfl:

I'm walking through daggerfall at costant ludicrous speed to measure its size

It should be pretty obvious just looking at it that those maps are not properly scaled. The size of the roads and city blocks are hugely different.

I don't think it's that hard.

there is a very good straight at the bridge in the South part of the map. Move the camera around to get close approximation if you're over water. Then measure it there.

Just use the car as a measurement. They are of relatively known size, to get better sizes for the cars just compare them to common objects as you say. (On the beach would be a good spot.)

FYI: The guy that charted the WoW map used the average human height as a starting point.
There are always assumptions and variables.

It'd be fun to see all these properly scaled. Be cool to see F.U.E.L.'s map along with these as well. I guess that doesn't count though since you don't walk around?

e: You don't in Paradise either though, so I don't see why not.

e2: lol @ a city block in burnout being the same size as a whole zone in WoW.

Burnout Paradise world is tiny... after an hour or two the world gets boring. Part of the problem is fast cars, I guess, but I still felt like the world should have been much, much larger. It wasn't impressive at all.

Or you know, drive at a fixed speed across the bridge and calculate the distance from the time it takes. The reported speed might not be totally true to life of course.

Edit: they never put in a speedometer? the plot thickens!

I'd like to see a more balanced comparison, I can't decide in my head whether Just Cause 2 or WoW is bigger.

Can't you just drive a length of road on the map at constant speed (eg. top speed) and time how long it takes you?

Damn Just Cause 2 is a big world. So amazing that game. On PC, greatest looking open world game ever for sure

the thing with burnout paradise is that only a fraction of the map is actually drivable. Even with all of the shortcuts most of the area is dead space.

I wish there was more to do in it though. And I have to admit, it was too big. Even in a jet it took AGES to fly somewhere. Still it was pretty cool for the novelty.

There's plenty to do in Just Cause 2. So many things to blow up or collect all over the place. Hell I'd hop into a jet and then ignore my destination to go bullseye a bunch of silos and cranes at a naval yard that I passed on the way.

Yup Just Cause 2 is the ultimate toy box open world game. It's such a visceral, eye popping experience though that it's impossible not to be seduced by the visual design of the world on PC. It's one of those games that is such a massive leap on PC from the console versions that it's astonishing. A completely different gen of games essentially.

I'll never forget some of the crazy acrobatics I performed

Yep, BP always looked wrong in that map picture. You can drive from one end to the other in just a couple of minutes.

So LOTR online is 375 times larger than WoW...
Is that terrain interesting at all? it seems like the times of thing they did to say they were bigger even if they 'needed' that that to represent middle earth it seems like a waste of space.

I don't think they take into account "non playable" areas when measuring LOTRO.

LOTRO is huge, but I'm not sure it's THAT big. I feel like they're using the measurements from the LOTR book or something. Maybe I'll pop in and see. I think Moria makes things a little weird with the measurements.

Its amazing how small Oblivion is in relation to Just Cause 2. I'm trying to think about an Elder Scroll game with the same physical scale as Just Cause 2 and I'm guessing the amount of assets that need to be created would be colossal (or the game world wouldn't be as dense). I guess at that point procedural generation needs to be heavily used.

Ok no way is Bo:P lager than WoW, that's gotta be bull.

Do not trust these maps one bit myself.

But JC:2 was fucking big, and as has been said, such a good looking game on PC.
