Map Comparison: Burnout Paradise Map isn't 200 sq miles

ok, if someon gave us a good approximation of every game world scale we can make a better map!

Post here! Actually I have only JC2 installed and it's pretty accurate as far I have seen.
The "Ship" benchmark looks useful, given large ships appear in GTA3, San Andreas, Burnout Paradise and possibly others (Just Cause 2? Far Cry?). That seems a worthy starting point.

WoW should be quite easy as you can cast a ranged spell (say for 30/40yd) look overhead view (not the in game map as it is stylised) and extrapolate longer distances from that

Another awesome thing about Just Cause 2 is the insane scalability. When I borrowed a crappy laptop from work (integrated graphics), I managed to get a smooth 30fps @ 320x240.

I have no shame.
haha, that's awesome.

Coincidentally, I've just started playing Paradise in the last couple of days.

While it's a very fun game, if nothing else, the idea that the game is that many orders of magnitude bigger than San Andreas is absolutely laughable.

What you don't realise is that the cars are all a mile wide. Literally.

yep, that's why there appears to be no people in the game. they are actually there, but normal sized. each car is controlled by hundreds of people through an extremely elaborate pulley setup

The Elite universe contains eight galaxies, each galaxy containing 256 planets to explore. Due to the limited capabilities of 8-bit computers, these worlds are procedurally generated. A single seed number is run through a fixed algorithm the appropriate number of times and creates a sequence of numbers determining each planet's complete composition (position in the galaxy, prices of commodities, and even name and local details— text strings are chosen numerically from a lookup table and assembled to produce unique descriptions for each planet). This means that no extra memory is needed to store the characteristics of each planet, yet each is unique and has fixed properties. Each galaxy is also procedurally generated from the first.

beat that, bitches

JC3 can be the same size with more detail. More detail and less repetition would go a long way toward making it feel bigger.

More importantly, i didn´t even know that TLOR was that big, damn!

EDIT: One thing though, can JRPG be compared here too? because i think that final fantasy series may be very big too, or not?
The MMOs would be pretty big, but other than that I don't think most of them could be measured very well. Lots of instances of discontinuity with a smaller map screen, or in the case of X and XIII most of the connected world is in the form of one pretty long path. XII might be interesting to see, though I'm sure it wouldn't match up to the MMOs.

jc2 is a great game; vastly underrated for the kind of time-killing, mindless, stupid fun it provides. it really helps that the mechanics are well-tuned and that the game is gorgeous even on consoles.

easily worth whatever they're asking for it now on steam or consoles.

here is link to googlemap of Lotro zones pre mirkwood.
If you can find a way to set an absolute distance it would be easy enough to verify.
Bree is outdoor town that might be easy to calculate the distance from.

Love the diversity in environments

JC2 is the best looking polygon-game I've ever played. And yes I own Crysis. It beats that.

It's roughly 20km from Thorin's Hall in the west to Rivendell in the east. If you join a fellowship with someone it shows you the exact distance to them in meters, so long as you're in the same world area. (same instance or building, or between any two places on the map where you can actually travel between them physically.) The north-south area varies a lot, but I measured from Bree to Suri-Kyla in the north, and it was about 11km (not a straight line, but slighty to the west as well.) This does not count the huge moria area, which is under the mountains and past a zoning barrier, so you can't really measure with places on the outside this way. The same thing is true of Lothlorien, Mirkwood and any other area east of the Misty Mountains. It's a different section of the game so I don't have measurements for that..

Just wanted to pop in and add that this thread inspired me to finally get around to playing Just Cause 2 this weekend... I started messing around with it, and suddenly six hours had gone by. Cool game! Only thing I really dislike so far is the god-awful voice acting. I can almost guarantee I'll never finish it, but I've already more than gotten my money's worth out of it.

It really is quite damn impressive getting up in the sky and seeing the entire world in the distance without it being fogged out or anything. Some aggressive LODing no doubt, but everything remains recognizable even when it's a ten minute helicopter ride away.

Fuel is awesome. Best racing game this gen by far. The vehicle handling is flawless and it looks insane with everything maxed, so I'm not sure where those complaints are coming from (console players maybe?). Most of all, it's just extremely relaxing to drive around and take in the sights as you make your way to the next race or vista point, which serves as a perfect complement to the adrenaline-pumping excitement of the races themselves.

That comparison in the OP is just messed up. Even looking at just the road thickness, you can tell they're using totally different scales. Who came up with that?

As long as the world is immersive, I don't care how big the map is...and to be honest, I don't really like huge maps anyway.

Just Cause 2 is a gorgeous and fun as hell game. I haven't even done my 3rd Agency mission and I've already spent like 15 hours on it, just blowing up random military bases and kicking ass.

Good point. I feel stupid for not noticing that.

OP's map and thread is officially BS.

Man GTA3 felt alot larger.
I think the way the bridges are in the map and the amount of turns you have to make to get to them make it seem like it takes longer than it should, but yea I'm still surprised GTA3's world is that small.

Anyway I can't believe Just Cause 2 is that big. I have the game but just haven't played it much. I never found a plane or jet yet to be able to cruise around the sky fast to see how far I can go.

That's a terrible shame. The final boss fight is amazingly over-the-top in a game that's already stupidly over-the-top.

Nothing personal, I don't finish many games that I start. It's not a reflection on the quality of the game, it speaks more to my gaming habits. If I don't beat a game in a weekend, chances are I never will - needless to say I prefer six hour single player campaigns.

Just Cause 3 needs to have the same absurdly sized map with the same type of chaos progression system...

...but with Red Faction: Guerilla's destruction capabilities. It'd be the last game I'd ever play. Imagine laying waste to an entire city. So good...
