Mario Baseball Announced

I would pay real money for SNK to make a Baseball Stars 3 in the style of the absolutely AWESOME Baseball Stars 2 for the Neo Geo but the odds of that are slim to none and slim just left town.

Man...those pix of the batters as they came to the plate. The guy shushing the crowd... the blowing bubbles... just awesome. Loved the animation and the quick hit freeze frames. Why doesn't anyone do that freeze frame stuff like that game and Tecmo Super Bowl anymore?!

Ok, I resent that last part. We're in no way a minority; Nintendo fans in general are the minority as proven by the sales numbers. Let's not get that twisted. Therefore, by extension, the fans of Mario Sports titles are the minority. Now that we've got the facts out of the way, let's move to the case.

It is too fucking bad for us. You're right. We have to vote with our wallets, and that's exactly what I'll be doing. I'll pay for every Pikmin game and Metroid Prime game and I'll ignore every single Mario Sports title. I'll continue to do this with hopes that my sorry little 50 dollars will one day join with the growing number of other people tired with Nintendo rehashes and franchise milking.

The game might be good, and I hope you enjoy it. My opinion is that I should not encourage Nintendo in this way, and I won't.

Now you're twisting. What I meant was that the sales for a Mario Baseball would potentially SLAUGHTER the sales of a big-headed googley-eyed Japanese style arcade baseball game (which is, consequently, why we DON'T get these games anymore to begin with), to the point where the bitching here becomes moot.

If you won't buy Mario Baseball, then you wouldn't buy a localized Famista title either. If, however, you would buy Famista, but turn down a Namco developed Mario Baseball, then you're just acting the moron, no offense. How else would you get this kind of gameplay, without modding your system and overpaying for an import? (Which, if you did, you wouldn't care about Mario Baseball anyway.)

I just can't wrap my mind around the logic behind AVOIDING a quality title (assuming it does turn out quality) because it's a Mario/Sonic/Whatever game. This could potentially expand the market with a new type of baseball game we, effectively, haven't seen in quality form for at least a generation, and Nintendo gets ATTACKED for it.

Fuck that.

But even more fundamentally, we should only care if a game is good or not. Your post here means that you care for a franchise. Imo, loving a franchise is the same thing as loving a company, it doesn't make much sense and it's the exact contrary of "being unbiased" and really vote with your money. Then again you could say a vote is an opinion wich is something mostly biased, i know. Just pointing out this fact because it amazes me how many people are fanboys or love the wrong things in gaming (and in life) ;)

It's nice if the game is good, and I won't fault it if it isn't. But retaining the same game using the same tired old characters just doesn't lend itself to originality or actually a manageable difference in quality from product to product. Mario Tennis for N64 is not as good as Mario Tennis for GC, for example, but Mario Tennis GC is not improved enough to spend another 50 dollars, imho. That's all.

Over 200 posts, wow! I had no idea Mario Baseball would be so popular!

At any rate, I'll definitely give this a rent. Should be fun. Would rather Mario Soccer, though, but maybe EA's arcade take will be pretty good.

I'd even pay real money for a simple Baseball Stars 2 port along with 2020 on any given platform. Those 2 games deserve another chance. Hell, even give them a 3D make over if you must. Just don't screw with the gameplay!!!

And that's fine, if that's your honest opinion. I purchased Mario Power Tennis mostly because I recall having splendid multiplayer games in Mario Tennis on the N64, and shinier graphics, a better framerate, new features, and not having to dig out my dusty N64 were, combined, worth $50 bucks for me. So I got it. And I love it, all over again.

But Mario Baseball? That's most likely going to be something that's pretty g-ddamn new to most of us, or at least, a spiritual successor to a kind of baseball game that we just don't have access to. Period.

Truth be told, if they teamed up with NAMCO to bring such a game I would buy it no matter what.
I've been thinking of how it could be done, and this is the best idea I came up with:
The Mushroom Kingdom is going to be destroyed. Nintendo keeps making too many Mario spinoffs and the sheer amount of games could wind up crushing the place. So Mario has to gather up the biggest ball of Mario spinoffs to save the world!

or something like that.

That idea is just zany enough to fit into the Katamari Damacy universe! I approve!

I swear. Am I the only one looking beyond Nintendo in this situation? It's a localized Famista! FINALLY! And arcade baseball IS fun when done by the Japanese. Come on! Mario is attached solely so Namco can net some sales here! :D :D Stop the bitching for once! Enjoy the latest in a series of arcade baseball! (Like Tetris Attack, or Starfox Adventures, there's another game underneath aside from the franchise!)

Just imagine Mario's face there! THAT'S what this is to me. RBI Baseball for the Cube. Took long enough.

Here's an idea (albeit a ripoff from Sega)... Follow the model of Gekitou Professional Baseball. They combined the actual players from the Japanese league (realistic models) with a popular anime series, and you get to pick from any MLB team, meanwhile each team gets a few anime characters per team, which have special powers.

This game design would allow lastability... otherwise it seems you would get tired of playing with only limited characters.

Having Mario and Ichiro on the same team as the Mariners would rock!
Or having Bowser and Barry Bonds on the same team.. no wait, Barry bought his way outta the MLBPA, never mind...

wow sometimes I am glad I dont own a Gamecube. Does nintendo make ANY original games anymore? this is disgraceful. Nintendo sometimes really deserves the bad name it's got.

Oh adam20, you're the worst troll ever.

I'm all over that! BS2 is just so fricking amazing. Since this is so unlikely, my goal for 2005 is to gather up the dough to buy a third (don't ask) Neo Geo cartridge unit, BS2 and Super Baseball 2020 among others. Emulators can go hang. There's nothing like the feel of those big Geo controllers when you play Geo games.

I like your idea about 1000x better. Isn't this game on GC in Japan though? I was thinking of importing one that sounded very similar.

Man, all these JMs coming out of the woodwork, and all with NO trolling skillz whatso-freakin'-eva!

It's funny. People say they intentionally avoid the Mario sports games, but little do they know those games are probably the best in their genre. We were playing Mario Golf for Cube tonight at our annual Thanksgiving party and that game is such a blast. Lots of replay value and some great options. Then we popped in Mario Power Tennis, easily the most well-defined in its genre and it just took the whole atmosphere to a new level. But everyone there had caught wind of Mario Baseball and a lot of the conversation over Tennis was how fucking awesome it'll be to set a Mario team. Just because it has "Mario" slapped on the cover doesn't mean it is just mediocre drivle; it's actually damn good. And so far Mario Golf and Tennis are two of the best games on the system.

I only have a few wishes, otherwise I know it'll be a fine game.

I'd like to see LOTS of different characters/teams to choose from. Unilize the Mario universe, guys, c'mon. I wanna see some Koopalings, maybe some other DK characters like Dixie or Cranky, How about Birdo, or Beezo, or Boom-Boom, or Poochy, or Hammer Brothers. Or how about some non-Mario universe guys like Pit, Kirby, or Ice Climbers? I'd LOVE to see Punch-Out!! guys like Bald Bull or King Hippo at the plate. The possibilities are almost endless, but we'll probably be stuck with Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Peach, DK, and Bowser again.

And yeah, they gotta have uniforms. A custom-uniform option would also be cool.

. nevermind. but I think you could only make that statement if your experience of the "genre" was rather small in turn.

Enjoy!
