Mario Baseball Announced

normally i don't mind the whole Mario Golf/Tennis thing, but this is just kinda stupid if you ask me. Nintendo has Ichiro sitting right there, he's hella popular on both sides of the atlantic. Can you imagine some kind of "Ichiro Ball" game. It can still be sort of arcadey and cartoony, but just have a bunch of made up character based teams, like Baseball Stars. Now i kinda hope Nintendo DOESNT make a new PunchOut game, cause they'll probably just stick Mario, Bowser and DK in it. Sure, its true that putting Mario and co. in the game might make sense financially, but it would also seem smart to me to try and create NEW ips that might have broader or different appeal and bring in a different audience.

I don't see what's wrong with this.

If nintendo was making a baseball game, no one would care. But as soon as they put in just about the only asset they have over their competition anymore (mario & co.) you all freak. 1080 avalanche was a massive bomb in part b/c it wasn't very good, but if it were mario characters going down nintendo-themed courses, even with the exact same gameplay it would have done MUCH better at retail.

I just don't get this hate. Mario Tennis and Mario Gold are among the best titles for their respective sport released this entire generation. No one complains that Take Two or EA has a full roster of sports titles, but once Nintendo tries to do it the nintendo way you all freak.

Edit: and before you all talk about new franchises, look at wario ware, Pikmin, and Animal crossing. That's 3 this gen. What other company has introduced three successful new franchises this generation?

My best guess is that people want a true sequel to Mario 64 (Something a tad better than Sunshine) instead of another easy to spit out Mario franchise game. Mario has lost his jump...He can party, he can play tennis, but he's lost his focus!

Sony too with several series.. i.e. SOCOM, Ratchet & Clank, Jak, Sly, Dark Cloud, ICO, Frequency/Amplitude, ATV Offroad Fury, WRC... with the Getaway and Killzone to a lesser extent.

It's not like it's either this or a platformer. the Mario sports game aren't even made by the same people who make the platformers. Same goes for the Mario Party titles.

In fact, the only Mario game which is made by EAD (Mario platformer makers) is Mario Kart. Mario Party, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Paper Mario and Mario Pinball don't affect the main series at all.

The difference is that sony had pretty much NO franchises whatsoever to begin with. They HAD to make new IPS. They didn't have the luxury of a franchise recognitoin. (Now, they do, but it still isn't as well-recognized as Nintendo's mascots, of course)

This is Sony's 2nd gen btw.

Well if EAD isn't working on a Mario platformer, then maybe they should give another team/company a shot at it. We've got Camelot working on the sports games...Hudson on the Party games...IS on the RPGs, I hope someone is covering the platformers. Whatever, I'm not a Nintendo fan, or a hater...I don't belong in a Nintendo thread. :lol

Of course they're working on a new Mario platformer, they're always working on one.

There wouldn't be a skateboarding game. Skateboarding games have evolved into an attitude filled rpg title. Nintendo would have to reinvent the genre AND successfully attract the THPS players, which would be damn near impossible. The baseball game is to fill a void left by MLB Slugfest. :( However, soccer is likely.

Edit:
So I take it no one knows the developer yet?

Sony didn't develop any of those. I can't think of any other developer that has established more new successful IPs this generation than Nintendo.

I just said: Capcom. You could argue that Viewtiful Joe wasn't that successful, but then I could argue that Wario Ware isn't a new IP.

EDIT: Oh I nearly forgot, I could also argue that Animal Crossing isn't technically this generation.

Whine whine whine whine whine milking the series whine whine whine whine whine Mario whine whine whine I don't care if it is good, I'm not buying it on principle whine whine whine whine whine.

Golly gee, I thought the idea was that "true gamers" loved the games, NOT the series/characters/platform. If this game is good, shouldn't all "true gamers" love it, regardless of whether Mario is in it or not?

Long live Camelot!

(P.S. So, when do we get Mario Dancy Party?)

Does anybody else think that the characters should be in uniform? The characters look like bystanders with their normal outfits on. FIX IT!

Btw, I've been waiting for Mario-Prowrestling FOREVER! Somebody has to set the standard for wrestling games--if Nintendo can't, nobody can.

Give me a Mario DUNKFEST for Revolution with a hip hop soundtrack and Mario with cornrows plz!

I can just imagine Mario doing a crossover and faking out his defendor and saying "you got clowned!" in his high pitched voice, while still retaining that trademark Mario smile.

Don't see the problem with Nintendo leveraging its staple of franchise characters. Would the game be better if the designs were original? I just hope they expand this into a full sports lineup in the future. Money is waiting to be made.

How do you know it is Namco? HOW?! I MUST KNOW! *fap*Famista*fap*

Edit: Once more info is know about this game, I suggest a petition be made demaning an option of striped uniforms for the players and also a seperate Team DK and a Team Koopa Kids.

Bowser can have a team to himself. (Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Boo, Shy Guy, Snifit, Thwomp, Koopa Troopa, Kamek, Hammer Bros, etc.)
DK have his goddamn entire family tree, including the ghost of Wrinkly.
That way the games aren't always the same.

Hell, at this rate while I'm wishing, how about a whole team of Yoshis and Birdos!

I like the way you think. I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I can skip golf and tennis, but I'm always up for a good baseball game!

I'd've liked to have seen Ichiro Baseball or something instead, though. I'm a lot more into the realistic ones. I guess this way the game doesn't get old until Mario REVOLUTIONARY Baseball comes out.

Nintendo said the current state of videogames is that of a crisis, right?

Clearly, this is how you respond to said crisis.

Here Nintendo, I will help you (for free):

Mario Boxing
Mario Football
Mario Soccer
Mario Squash
Mario Snowboarding
Mario Cricket
Mario Skiing
Mario Swimming
Mario Hockey
Mario Rugby
Mario Wrestling
Mario Sailing
Mario Long Jump
Mario Horse Polo
Mario Rock Climbing

All I can think of for now, cheers!

FUCK THE HATERS.

Being one of the biggest baseball fans in the world, I'm just dying to get my hands on this one. It's Mario, and it's baseball. How can you NOT like this?(Unless you either don't like Mario or Baseball. Then, of course, you suck.)

Zelda just got bumped off the top of my "Most Wanted" list.

From the screens it appears that there are teams of 5 characters. Team Bowser being: Bowser, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong and Koopa Troopa.

Team Mario is Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, and someone else [Toad?]

That still leads a severe lack of characters to actually have such a game. I mean, who do we have left? Toadette, Birdo, Baby Mario & Luigi and Bowser [Please god no].

I can see Shy Guy, Goomba [That'd be pretty funny :P] etc being in there. I really hope that they can finally acknowledge some of these other games not made by EAD, such as the Paper Marios, Super Mario RPG and M&LSS. Plenty of characters in there to choose from, not just these generalisations [ie; the Koopa Troopa]

A game, for me, is about the experience.

Gameplay's a big part of that experience.

Elements like graphics, sound, plot (where applicable), and--yes, here it comes--characters are also a part of that experience. Depending on how these elements are handled, they can significantly enhance or decrease a person's enjoyment of the final product. In the case of the Marioverse characters, I'm leaning heavily towards 'decrease', to the point where their presence in a game actually makes me not want to buy it. To put it bluntly, I am sick of these characters.

I know that it may be difficult for a man who writes for a site called The Mushroom Kingdom to conceive of such a thing, but yes, it is possible to grow tired of seeing--and hearing--the Mario cast after awhile. The sight of them no longer fills me with the comfortable warmth of seeing old friends. They're more like a bunch of friends that have parked their asses at your place, eaten all the cold cuts and drank all the beer, and now refuse to go home. All the habits that used to be so endearing when you only saw these guys once in a blue moon are enough to get on your nerves when they're underfoot all the time, and while you know you'll feel a lot better about them after they've gone away for awhile, right now you wish they'd just leave. That, in a nutshell, is how I've come to feel about Mario and friends, thanks to Nintendo's relentless overexposure. They need to go away for awhile. Sorry if that makes me less 'hardcore' in your eyes (which I believe is nonsense, by the way), but that's my take on things.

IAWTP. I liked Mario. Really. I like Paper Mario, and I'm the type of person who really thinks cute Nintendo references are funny. And yeah, I'll probably end up playing Mario Baseball and perhaps even liking it. But for serious, I am so fucking tired of Mario and company now that I can't even think of a decent thing to say. So all I will say is IAWTP.

I think the reality behind this title is "The Japanese love them some cartoony baseball". And, Mario Sports titles in general sell well in NA. They could use normal baseball players, but then it would only likely sell in Japan; with Mario characters, a Japanese idea (moreso) becomes a global one.

The thing is, without Mario, you cannot make this game. No one wants arcade baseball these days. If you do it with real players, people don't get it. It doesn't sell and no one buys. If you make an arcade baseball game with made-up teams and players like the old RBI or Baseball Stars, once again, everyone ignores it.

So how do you fill what is a valid niche that is definitely underserved without making a "generic" game? You put in recognizable characters that have arcade sensibilities and appeal.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour is an awesome golf game. It's not just good from a Mario/Arcade-style perspective, it's awesome as plain old golf too. It relies on your skill at playing it just like a good arcade/action/sports game should. With baseball, we really don't get that anymore. It's the real thing or nothing. Plus, Slugfest was just silly with its real players beating each other up on the field. That's just stupid. It doesn't work. You need the fantasy teams and players to make arcade baseball work and Mario opens that up to a whole different kind of audience AND to some baseball fans.

There's often been folks that lament the loss of things like RBI Baseball. Namco could never do superdeformed players in the US today and get any kind of sales. But with this, they have a great opportunity to put that engine to good use that can sell in any country.

I agree though that it would be cooler to have the characters in uniforms. :)
