Golly gee, I thought the idea was that "true gamers" loved the games, NOT the series/characters/platform. If this game is good, shouldn't all "true gamers" love it, regardless of whether Mario is in it or not?
Long live Camelot!
(P.S. So, when do we get Mario Dancy Party?)
A game, for me, is about the
experience.
Gameplay's a big part of that experience.
Elements like graphics, sound, plot (where applicable), and--yes, here it comes--
characters are also a part of that experience. Depending on how these elements are handled, they can significantly enhance or decrease a person's enjoyment of the final product. In the case of the Marioverse characters, I'm leaning heavily towards 'decrease', to the point where their presence in a game actually makes me not want to buy it. To put it bluntly,
I am sick of these characters.
I know that it may be difficult for a man who writes for a site called The Mushroom Kingdom to conceive of such a thing, but yes, it
is possible to grow tired of seeing--and
hearing--the Mario cast after awhile. The sight of them no longer fills me with the comfortable warmth of seeing old friends. They're more like a bunch of friends that have parked their asses at your place, eaten all the cold cuts and drank all the beer, and now
refuse to go home. All the habits that used to be so endearing when you only saw these guys once in a blue moon are enough to get on your nerves when they're underfoot all the time, and while you know you'll feel a lot better about them after they've gone away for awhile, right now you wish they'd just
leave. That, in a nutshell, is how I've come to feel about Mario and friends, thanks to Nintendo's relentless overexposure. They need to
go away for awhile. Sorry if that makes me less 'hardcore' in your eyes (which I believe is nonsense, by the way), but that's my take on things.
