Keep a star and use it at the right time; I do that a lot, and it was a common technique on the Wii. And with the tanooki tail and the overabundance of stars in this game, nobody should put themselves in such a tight position on the track. The tracks are narrower, but they aren't minuscule.
C'mon, you know it's not that easy to get a star and then hold on to it until you really need it. You'll just be passing up shorcuts and item boxes and all of that could add up to nothing when someone mashing L gets a lightning strike and you drop the star. And yes, many of the tracks are too small to avoid items on.

I have played a shitload of this game, and neither in worldwide races or communities have I seen anyone consistently get ahead and stay ahead of the pack over the course of several races. It happened WAY more in MK Wii, and good players only tended to lose on very short tracks where items dominated.
SecretMoblin said:And there's a simple explanation for why top speed has reduced importance: coins. Why is it a bad thing that top speed is now affected more by your racing skills than a kart combination?
It's bad because you drop coins when you get hit. And since getting hit likely means you're at a dead stop, people who pass you will pick up your coins and any coins in font of you.
Not to mention what I said a bit earlier in this thread about item boxes not disappearing even though people driving through them still get items (confirmed on the touch screen). Having 4 fewer players on the track means nothing when 8 players all get items out of half as many item boxes. Even worse, I thought it was a lag issue at first but then I noticed the same doesn't happen with coins so it seems like it's an intended feature.
I still think it's a great game, and to Nintendo's credit, you can play in communities with fewer/no items, but then you're limiting yourself to a much smaller pool of opponents. They really missed an opportunity to balance the items, just as they have been doing with the series all along.
