Using a mini-turbo right before the mud help a bit.

You charge up a red MT and then jump into it so the MT's still going when you exit so you're back up to speed.

I also spent like two hours hitting my alarm since I had it on Snooze and was having a really hard time getting out of bed. So I'm late once again.

Don't button mash. Only tap the L button once at the right time. Learn to do it properly or otherwise you'll start randomly using items without meaning to.
