Really starting to lose patience with this game. Every single race, and I'm barely exaggerating, I'll be in a decent position (aka 1st-5th) midway or near the end of the final lap and receive some useless item (squid, coin, etc) before being hit with one thing after another, knocked off the track, or some ridiculous sequence of events that ends up dumping me last or thereabouts. Obviously that unfairness is part of Mario Kart, but not when it's happening over and over and over again. The item balancing on this game seriously needs to be sorted out, as I said, it's fine when this sort of thing happens once every few races or something, but it's being non-stop for me right now and killing any fun in the game when I know no matter how well I race, it's all for nothing when I'm arbitrarily going to get kicked back six or so places on the last leg.

(Rant over, just needed to get that off my chest. Carry on.)

You'll become hardened to that eventually. Don't let it break you.

Or do this if you want to vent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPoVYFXsJPQ

I always aim for first, but due to what you describe I know that just being in the top half is good enough. I count being 6th in a 12-man lobby as being 2nd (or 3rd/4th/5th). So in my mind I'm either in the top half for the race, or I wasn't, basically. =p

If you read this thread (or any Mario Kart 8 thread for that matter) you'll notice 98% of the comments are about us cursing others and complaining over the shit this game pulls out of its ass in the most critical moments.

The other 2% of the comments are about us being happy because we screwed someone else over.

I mean, read our testimonials.
Like DaBoss said, don't let that bother you. I'm sure this community would be dead by now if the item balance were the main factor but thankfully, it still has a small but healthy group of people playing it every day.
The game is unfair most of the time but it has something special that keeps pulling me back for more.
Once you circumvent that issue, you'll see its true beauty hidden under all the nasty shit.

I think GAF has pulled a hyper-competitive side of myself out of slumber which started from Brawl wifi days before continuing through me getting into FGs (Marvel 3, Guilty Gear Xrd), continuing in Smash with the hopes of entering tournaments (Project M, Smash 4, Melee) and now kinda lives on in how I interact in Mario Kart. While I don't go as hard in this game as I do in the others I mentioned, there's something very appealing to knowing that you can go into this cruel cruel game's environment and consistently say that you're a part of the top half of folks that play it regularly. It's also helps that we have some real diversity between the crazy ass personalities here in KartGAF.

Well some of you have developed a special gift for either avoiding or just recovering quickly from ridiculous spam, I'm not there yet. Last night it seriously got so bad that I started just letting everyone go at the beginning of the race and catching up because I got tired of being spammed into last place after the first set of boxes.

I'm not really expecting to win against such strong competition but I am trying to have fun and being hit by 5 items while stationary isn't on my list of fun things to do. Nintendo intentional made these item/hit stun changes from MK7 and I'm assuming they play tested them extensively before launching the game so I can only take it as more evidence that they hate the people who play their games. Is there any other possible reason for developing such a beautiful trolling simulator?

And this is why there should be a bit more invincibility after taking a hit...after hit after hit after hit while you watch your character flail their arms like an idiot from all the suffering.

I still think Mario Kart 64 handled hit stun, spin outs and launchers the best. Every other game after it excelled in areas that were easily discerned, but that game had the right idea about a bunch of things directly related to how you interacted with items:

- Banana peels could generate a spin out that decreased your speed and obviously ruined your traction/line for a set amount of time, but you weren't left helpless, you didn't lose all of your speed and you could actually recover to top speed with timed acceleration press.

- Green shells generated a multiple bounce/tumble effect versus red shells as a result of being harder to hit people with versus the lock on inherent to red shells. Green shells also made it hard to recover into full speed after landing.
--Red shells on the other hand created powerful single hit launches that would send you much farther away but would allow you to recover with an acceleration press in two bounces. The homing on the red shells wasn't instantaneous meaning you still had to have some sense about using them versus "setting and forgetting" them.

- Lightning didn't force you to drop items, but "power up" state items were blocked from use until you left the shrunken state.

- Boo item is still sorely missed. Fake item block with a defensive hitbox as well.

- Players generally had more invincibility after taking a hit in MK64.

These are probably very nitpicky things but I imagine there'd probably be less combo style cluster fucks if things worked like this versus how they are now.

And this is why there should be a bit more invincibility after taking a hit...after hit after hit after hit while you watch your character flail their arms like an idiot from all the suffering.

I'm going to try to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt and believe that they were just being naïve about the abuse potential of the length of the hitstun and lack of invincibility frames. When you're in a (rare) room where people aren't wasting their items to troll people who are already stopped you can see the logic in how the RNG is supposed to work. But since 99% of the time people are either trolling, working in teams or targeting specific people whatever controlled chaos Nintendo was trying to orchestrate goes completely out the window and we're left with the hot mess we have usually.

As bad as KartGAF is sometimes the custom 200CC WW rooms are a hundred times worse. I swear that I've been in rooms where no one is trying to win and everyone is just throwing their items backwards to screw with people. Being hit in the face with a red shell when in 12th is actually something that's happened to me there -_-

This would be a perfectly reasonable excuse if this were their first Mario Kart with online (or overall) but no... it's their fourth installment and they somehow (what a surprise) fucked up something they pretty much nailed 3 games ago.

Less invicibility frames after a hit? dumb decision but still manageable
Being able to take a hit while you're still in hitstun from a previous item? That's so bullshit it makes you wonder what the fuck were they thinking.

They're fully aware Mario Kart is a love letter for trolls, nasty gameplay and overall "luck" factor that it's baffling they successfully made a lot of stupid decisions pass testing.

edit: Also, I just can't at when you're off-road, hit a wall and you're not even able to hop to get back on track. Your vehicle has this.. "skid" animation so you have to drag your ass instead.
The fuck?

I usually get screwed over the same way, around the end of the final lap. Sometimes because items are bullshit and I get a single mushroom while the two people in front get three, usually because someone hits me with something, then bumps me off track which slows me down way more than a 2nd item hit would.
It doesn't bother me too much tho, because I know other people have to deal with the same crap every once in awhile too. Besides, it's Mario Kart! Losing/winning a race with bad/dumb luck is a huge aspect of it :p

On that note, here's a video from yesterday. The first 35 seconds showcase what an awful, awful driver I am on 200cc, the last 10 shows Hypno's piranha keeping everyone at bay as he gives me the win. Thanks Hypno!

You missed it but I'm sure you saw that we played MK7 a few nights ago and it's almost shocking how superior the online experience is compared to MK8. MK8 has graphics and track design going for it but other than that it's hard to say it's the better game.

Enough bitching though, is anyone up to play for a while?

Dat SNES RR race tho..

I can go o another room if you're not in after this.

Edit: what did those vanishing boxes look like in spectate mode? Were people cutting in front of me?

Edit2: I needed to change characters.

Edit3: Roo, you're going to have to explain to me what you were doing trying to take that shortcut with rotating greens :/

I don't know. I was watching everyone. The whole race was a mess hahaha
The funny part was when I switched to watch what were you doing and all I saw was you falling off track the final lap

Edit: Greg what are you doing? Stahp!

Remember when Mario Kart was all about low res textures and 2D enviroments? Yeah, I miss those days..
Leaves on trees are solid in this shit >.>
