Urgh, the single player mode of this game on 150cc is dreadful. The rubber-banding is as bad, if not worse than any game since the N64, with the computer able to stay virtually toe-to-toe with you even if you hit every boost, avoid every obstacle and take every corner flawlessly, and blue shells (while there's one a race, without fail) have generally just been replaced by lightning as the unstoppable weapon of the day, always timed tactically to hit you when you're in flight or some other faintly vulnerable spot. The number of times I've done a near-perfect race (in terms of corner boosts, no obstacles, etc), then been hit by a lightning and several shells and overtaken by three or four people within seconds (and if there's an item box soon after, it's nearly always something useless like a single banana or mushroom) just beggars belief. And yes, I know luck is part of the Mario Kart formula, but this is just ridiculous.

Also, an item-less Daisy should not be able to barge Wario off the track when both are travelling at full speed. Just sayin'.

I didn't experience it like that at all. With a heavy character and fast cart I can stay miles ahead of the pack on most tracks. The only problems really are: early red shells before you have defensive items, the inevitable but fortunately apparently rarer blue shell of doom or unfortunate lighting timing (mid-air or something) and your own shitty driving :p

Oh I'm not pretending to be especially great at the game or anything, but aside from on one or two races out of god knows how many, the computer just never seems to falter. The most pertinent example was on Rainbow Road (the new one), I got three mushrooms early on and took exactly the same route as I did when beating the staff time trial ghost, only with two extra boosts meaning I should have been even quicker. Near about the end of the second lap, I got hit with lightning and then a blue shell, which I don't mind too much except that within at most two seconds (I was just starting up again), two racers overtook me. To keep up with me, they'd have to have been going faster than the time trial staff ghost, which is insane. My time trial record - albeit across three laps - was 2'18, so not setting any records but no slouch either. That kind of thing just seems to happen all the time, albeit not always quite so blatant.

They do scale to your speed, it's actually a good idea to play a lightweight here and focus on acceleration since they'll actually be slower and you can shrug off a blue shell.

My gangsta drift entry, pretty much started drifting right after the starting line.

The only remotely ugly thing about this game:

Honestly wouldn't have minded DKCTF getting delayed even further if it meant Retro could've quickly hopped in to supply and animate a version of DK model that didn't look absolutely horrifying.

As a guy who ends up in the top 5 about 90% of the time in GAF OT, I understand skill plays a part in it. Guys like Koodo, Papercuts, Kouichi, Odiscoe don't just happen to get into top 3 consistently by accident

But there's a bigger randomness factor in this game than Gears of War 3 do the luck of the draw that is the item wheel.
I've been aging in a no-items tournament. This really makes it all about the racing.

I've watched the fastest Ghostdata from a Spanish guy at Toad Harbor yesterday and noticed that he doesn't use the jump tricks/boosts once. I always thought you would get a good speed punch with them...

Sometimes it's faster NOT to do tricks since it actually slows you down a bit. Check out Dk jungle, Wario Stadium, and sunshine air port's ghosts.

Really? I think he looks awesome! I always put focus on me,my brother, Luigi and DK during re-plays.

Well, picked up the game last night. Went through the Grand Prix on 50cc to unlock the cups, get familiar with the courses/controls, and to unlock stuff.

Managed to get my main Rosalina after the 5th cup, so I think I'll try jumping into some online races tonight.

I tried posting last night but was having some issues...

To the 4 people who got red-shelled on the last lap on Yoshi Valley you can blame the Mario Kart gods for that. They deemed me worthy of getting back to back triple red shells. I was Nytseshade so if you were one of the shelled I apologize
(not really...lol)

also, that was the first time I hit that damn egg. When it's right in front of the gate and there's no way around it that's not a good feeling.
