Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

Paste Magazine gives it an 8.8

"The other notable omission is in the cast of characters’ diversity. After 30 years there are still zero Mario characters of color, a problem that Mario Kart 8 highlights by lining up all the characters on a single screen. When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly white. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white. While it’d be atypical of Nintendo to introduce new characters into a Mario Kart game, it’s also where the deficit is the most obvious, and during play I found myself disappointed that Nintendo’s stable of characters so painfully fails to reflect the diversity of its audience."
WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN

... that said, it does remind me of how much I hated Daisy's redesign. Bring back the tanned redhead instead of this squirrel-cheeked shrill albino monster you've saddled us with!

The cast is disappointing. Nabbit, Dry Bones, Bowser Jr, Petey Piranha, etc would've better than those babies.

Maybe DLC is planned? Did Nintendo ever mention DLC or did they said there will be none?

Nothing has been said about additional Downloadable Content for Mario Kart 8, though I think it would be a missed opportunity if they didn't take that chance & offer some of the omissions from the roster. (Goombella & Fawful, anyone?)

He has a point, but if you think thats bad read the comments. Some 4channing piece of shit. I would punch that dude square in the face.

Some comments on that "racial issue" review are absolutely disgusting. She pointed out an issue she had with the game, and likely with the property. Nintendo could include some diversity, and hasn't, thus she called them on it. Didn't say the game sucked. Didn't say that it should be boycotted. Simply made a point.

Hell, they white-washed Daisy. MY DAISY!

um

What are the chances Nintendo fixing battle mode by having downloadable maps?

They've been pretty keen on experimenting with High Quality DLC. I would say it's likely there will DLC. Can't say that it will be Battle Mode Maps, but I hope so.

Ugh, I want this game so bad, but not enough to buy a system for it.

I think you represent the vast majority of gamers nowadays, and unintentionally nailed Nintendo's biggest problem. The number of people willing to pay the entry fee of buying a Nintendo platform to play Nintendo games is rapidly diminishing, but the number of people willing to buy Nintendo games remains as high as it's ever been.

Mario DOES have a black character though...

And if you take the ending of Mario Sunshine as canon, he was technically playable in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour as Shadow Mario.

Yup, Nintendo should've asked Sega if they could borrow Knuckles

well he has a point. mario is one of the biggest and oldest multimedia franchises to not have any kind of racial diversity. bringing it up as an aside in a mario kart review is probably not the best way to introduce the conversation tho.

I think the reviewer has a point. Outside of all the monsters/animals of all colours, the human ones are all white. Personally though, a little more concerned why Nintendo doesn't include colour options in something like Animal Crossing.

Someone start #Miiquality2.

No in-race voice chat killed this for me, but it looks awesome regardless. I hope it does well and that everyone else enjoys it.

I'm not much of a talker when playing online but I have always appreciated the option for talking in racing games. Both for general chatter and a little bit of trash talk. The feature will be missed.

Ha, Mario has coloured character? In that case, I've got a secret to share with you.

He's not a mario character at all! Hes OoT/MMs postman

yeah, i don't disagree. that toad/toadette being human part completely threw me off though

The Kohler review gives me pause after reading how cheap this AI continues to be. Still, I have to do something with the Wii U and I can play it with my son.

Damn demographic spanning Nintendo...

I'd also be interested to hear what the regulars from the Latte discussion thread have to say about the power of the Wii U now that we're seeing a little more of what the Wii U is capable of.

Latte certainly seems to be throwing around A LOT of polys for a GPU that's only supposedly drawing 20-odd Watts and pushing 176GFlops, don't you think..?

To be honest, it doesn't really look all that high poly. You can see the squared off edges on almost any rounded object. Though there's definitely a lot going on, and the lighting and effects are nice enough to make for an attractive looking package. But I don't think this changes the conversation a huge amount regarding the capabilities of the system.

Time to bring out Mario's long time friends from plumbing school, Carl and Darnell.

Yeah, it is a shame that every major human character is white. We know that people of color exist in the Mario world thanks to YI:DS, so I really wish that we'd get a non-white major Mario character.

Nintendo, this game is great but $300 for the Wii U is insane. Do something please.

Hmmm, I would have said: Nintendo, I haven't played MK8 yet, but it certainly looks great! The Wii U is also great; I'm even happier that I put in the effect to find it for a better price than the RRP.

Hahahaha

Toad and toadette what the fuck

Is this by large the same team that did MKWii? Because this looks amazing, and I remember MKWii looked pretty underwhelming even for a Wii/GCN-class game.

the Mario Kart Bundle @ 330 is a decent deal for someone completely new to Wii..

Deluxe System - 200 (You can find it for 200 Furb'd or 250 new)
Wiimote Plus w / wheel 35 + 5
Mario Kart 8 Game 60.00
Additional Free game with Nintendo Club Registration.. 50.00

Roughly a 350 to 400 dollar value... Not to mention you get free online and backwards compatibility.

It has value ... I dont get why people are complaining ..

The thing is though that whilst everything isn't as insanely round as everything in Super Mario 3D World you've got to take into account the Kart and character models, the curves on the track and the large animated models such as the giant stone Bowser etc.

It's throwing around more polys than you think imo.

This is about what I expect. 90% of the reviews are great, with only a couple of sites giving it a low ball score. Sometimes those sites are just being honest in the face of overwhelming fan expectations, but most of the time they're just looking for hits.
