Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

Don't get me wrong. I am sure Mario Kart 8 is a great game, but if such things appear on a front page of a non gaming publication like guardian I bet there has been some money transfer. :)

As opposed to appearing on a gaming publication?

I just found out about the lack of battle arenas (I've been keeping myself in the dark from most details). Ugh. I'm honestly reconsidering buying this now. Tell me it isn't true, GAF.

My soul is crushed. Battle mode has always been the main draw for me.
I think I played Battle Mode in Mario Kart 7 for about 15 minutes out of the total 200 hours I spent racing. There was a honey hive level, right?

Meanwhile I bet the new battle mode is way better than people are anticipating and will become a cult favorite.

then you haven't played a Mario Kart since what...MK64?

Countless hours battling each other on MK64...even the Menu told you its the superior mode by choosing it and Mario saying "Battleee?!" Oh boy...

Wiis battle mode isnt that bad, though its just who hit the most! (stupid teams)

Well multiplayer racing off and online will be perfect for me so its ok :D

I think the Verge puts it best. They're a tech focused website that will occasionally review games that people in general are interested in.

A Mario Kart game is usually that. Zelda on Wii U will be a game like that, Smash will be a game like that.

Bayonetta 2, not so much.

That's why places like the Guardian is reviewing Mario Kart 8, because the series has gotten a notable foothold in the gaming landscape and its something their readers would like to hear about. Nothing more, nothing less.

(Probably didn't hurt that their reviewer got to play the game a couple of weeks before release).

I am against Super Smash Kart. We have one franchise mashup game, we don't need another.

If we want to talk about Nintendo "branching out" with Mario Kart, there's plenty of Mario-related material that can be explored. Think of all the characters and locales that have shown up in Mario Sports games, RPGs, and even in spinoff titles like Wario Land, WarioWare, Yoshi's Island, Luigi's Mansion, Donkey Kong, etc.

They can stick to the Mario universe only and still have an array of options.

Too bad they don't seem to realize that.

That Eurogamer review... "Video games have been this detailed before, but never with such imagination, grace and humour."

Bold statements. Getting seriously excited reading that.

yup, that part got me excited as hell, and i don't doubt it after seeing the videos

From that review:

Platform: Wii U

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal

Publisher: Nintendo EAD Group No. 1

Released: May 30, 2014

Price: $59.99

Score: 10/10

Am I missing something?

Nintendo finally went third-party.

You give a game a perfect score, and say the actual devs published it? Didnt Ubisoft Montreal make Thief? Ironic...

Video games are all super serious. All of them.

Especially Serious Sam. That guys super duper serious.

Yeah, the RPGs have the best characters in the Mario Universe IMO.

So a Smash Kart isn't neccessary if those wells remain untapped.

The Guardian has had a well-staffed gaming department for years, and often puts the newest videogame reviews on the front page. This isn't anything new for them.

It's bad enough when peopel claim that EA and Activision are funnelling money to the likes of IGN. As far as I'm aware, there has never been a single claim that Nintendo do the same. In fact, I seem to remember that when Rich Stanton got drunk on Twitter and revealed alleged money deals, Nintendo were the one publisher he went out of his way to defend as not being into corrupt moneyhatting.

Q: "@MDKII: @RichStanton Any other examples of good PR you've dealt with?"
A: Nintendo - flawless. Early access, no interest in the score.

That's good to know.

I'll admit that nothing has ever surpassed 64's Battle Mode in my eyes. Wii's Battle Mode was alright, though. The courses felt too big, I thought. I felt like I would have trouble finding opponents sometimes.

It sounds like some people are kind of negative about this game, but I'm still pretty excited about it. Sadly I'm kind of used to the fact that Nintendo's online support could be better. The game sounds wonderful and I can't wait for it.

I do remember there being something of a stink over (I believe) Donkey Konga 2 getting only like a 3 from somewhere, then the review was taken down and uploaded again with a 6. Penny Arcade thought Nintendo interfered but maybe it was just office politics.

I made a thread a while ago about how a Nintendo All Stars kart game would be awesome...turns out most of the people who replied said hell no.

At first I was like yeah, they should. but now I am not sure how I would feel seeing Link and Sheik, and Samus riding around in Karts. I feel it would just cheapen their image a bit. Them fighting in Smash makes sense because thats tough and cool and already fits their character.

Maybe they could have Zelda character on horses, hot air baloons, birds or Cuckoos. I dont know.

I caved yesterday and finally preordered the Wii U bundle, so excited. I'm thinking Wind Waker HD as my free game, and then I'll pick up 3D World and The wonderful 101

I think "Nintendo Kart" would be a bad move. It works so well for Smash Bros. because Smash Bros. is all about the characters. Having different characters with different abilities and fighting styles is extremely important to the core of Smash Bros., and that's why including all kinds of Nintendo characters makes sense there. Mario Kart's not really about the characters, though—it's all about the racing. The characters are pretty insignificant, all things considered. Sticking to a single universe in Mario Kart helps the game be more cohesive and focused. If they were to add other Nintendo characters to the mix, it would muddle things up quite a bit. You'd have to introduce different karts, different items, etc. And while I'm sure that would excite many people, I think it would harm the game's identity.

I feel similarly about Sonic & All-Stars Racing. I feel like the game would have been so much better if they had just focused on a single universe. It's not like there aren't enough Sonic characters to go around, after all. The inclusion of all these other SEGA characters really felt off to me, and it always came off as an unnecessary inclusion just to be more different from Mario Kart. Say what you will about the gameplay (I know a lot of people praise it very much here, and I think it's a great game, too, but I wouldn't consider it better than Mario Kart for a number of reasons, at least not compared to Mario Kart 7 and 8), but I think the game was harmed more than it was benefitted from being a crossover game. The items all feel entirely dull and uninspired, for example.

If there is to be another Nintendo crossover game featuring multiple franchises, I think it would have to be a game in which the characters are at the very core, like Smash Bros. I just don't think Mario Kart is the game to do that with.

Nintendo RPG.

Oh my goodness, I wish I didn't click that review of Mario Kart where the person was complaining that there weren't enough people of colour in Mario Kart.

I definitely think that it would be great to have more dark skinned characters in Nintendo franchises. But I think it would be better to focus on other Mario games like maybe Paper Mario or the Mario platform games for that kind of criticism. I also think that people should be more aware that when they're criticizing Japanese developers about this sort of thing, that they are criticizing people of colour for their aesthetic and artistic decisions themselves.

By the American definition of what a person of colour is, Japanese people are people of colour. That's not to say that Japan and other Asian countries shouldn't be accepting of brown and African people. But I think that this sort of thing can and should be approached from a slightly different perspective than it is in white dominated countries like America.

What the writer of the article said wasn't too bad. Just I feel like not quite the time and place since this is a spinoff Mario game. To have brown skinned people for the Mario Kart games, it would be good to have more brown skinned people in Mario games to begin with.

The comments are the thing I regret most. While it's true that the criticism may have been a little bit out of place. People were using it as an excuse to be awful racists and I stopped reading them immediately. Really awful.
