Mario Kart DS is online

According to EGM! I saw no topics and search is down. Also, I don't have the issue so I can't confirm/deny it. But the scan is also convincing!

But if so... YES.

Can anyone with EGM confirm this? The segment on Mario Kart DS online is very small, but it says (summarized): This year will be a banner year for this particular franchise with Namco bringing out the arcade game and with the DS version. But not only that, the DS version will be the first in the series to offer online multiplayer karting.

If Phantom Dust comes to the DS, will Drinky implode?
And they better no be confusing this with 8 player wifi play. If so... Bang! Zoom! Straight the MOON!

That's slick, I suspose I'll certainly need a DS now as well. I only wish they had started with Double Dash. Two people on one console co-oping others online would've been great.

I'm like, the only DD cheerleader, but that was such a great game, best MK I think, if only it had more content, too easy to breeze through in a weekend rental.

Close this thread. Mario Kart is not a game. It's just a stupid, slow-paced, joyless mess that Nintendo chooses to paste its characters in every once in a while. A map screen? Come on! At least they could make the second screen "Pong" or something, so the player could try a real game while making those overly wide turns. Who wants a 3D racing game with no analog stick anyway? No, Mario Kart DS will be such a shallow, broken, and wretched experience that it deserves to be lumped in with Nintendogs.

The fact that Nintendo is exposing an online community to this travesty makes the situation even worse.

How was that? Evil enough?

I will come and sit in the street just outside of your home so we can play wifi games and giggle to each other over the mic.

Mario Kart DS Online is going to rock. Once Nintendo gets more of their stuff online, I think it's going to be very hard for some companies to compete with them in the online arena. FFCC Online would be absolutely amazing!

[side note: Kudos to Drinky for inadverently creating 3 separate threads about Nintendogs while trying to lock 1.]

Blah who cares about MK DS

My DS is all about Nintendogs!

I'm naming my first dog DRINKY and I want to beat the hell out of it.

My second dog will be named OLIMARIO and I will starve that bitch whenever I see an anti Nintendo post

Nintendogs is AWESOME - AWESOME is NINTENDOGS!

Man, I hope they don't have voice chat in Mario Kart. I didn't wanna hear Xbox fans, I don't wanna hear Nintendo fans.

I know you can't have the system ignore Drinky because of his status, but things would be a lot smoother if you let him get in his one or two useless comments and ignore them.

If he's that annoying to you just use self-control and ignore his posts that way :P

Well, it's not like Mario Kart is a squad-based game. Just turn voice chat off (hopefully they'll have that option..).

MK DS Online, for free, would ensure my re-purchase of a DS. Portable gaming isn't really my schtick, but Mario Kart Online is a dream I've had for years.

Chris are you serious? Is this real?
I'm assuming that it is indeed in the new EGM and that the thread starter isn't lying, but unfortunately I don't have a copy in front of me, so.

You don't need a lot of creativity to imagine that this and/or some other anticipated DS game might go the way of Animal Crossing.

As long as they don't go the RR: DS control route, WOOHOO.

If they go the RR: DS control route, RETARDED.

Why ask this could we not tell the controls by watching the vids from that dev conference?
is this an issue to worry about?

I wouldn't be lying, I have the scan if you want to see. I can't post it for obvious reasons. The only thing I don't know is whether the scan is legit. It certainly looks legit enough.

especially considering how hush hush they've been about mario kart every time they've show it. only the one level demo, no mention of any details, and always "more at e3, and when it launches later this year". at this point there's really no reason to think it won't be online. especially if animal crossing is going to be. even if the game comes out before the "architecture" is in place, they could still have the online coded into the game in preparation. but hopefully they won't even need to do that.

That was not the final game, it can always change. Hopefully it won't.

Amir0x speaks the truth, the man does indeed have the information in question and it looks legit.

Hopefully this is true because I'd fucking love to play Mario Kart Online (seriously not having this would be stupid).

What happens if MK's online mode is as poorly implemented as MKDD's lan mode? I mean, it's not like there's any evidence that EAD (or any Nintendo team) has any skill whatsoever with netcode (there are what, 2 GC games that support more than 4 players?). Will Nintendo loyalists suddenly decree that lag/shoddy netcode is good because a real gamer would know that conquering lag is part of the challenge, nay, skill of online gaming?

This doesn't even take into account all the other things that could, and most likely will, plague MK DS, like shitty shitty battle arenas. Or have you all forgotten MK7.9's giant cube level?

It would be stupid for ANY multiplayer DS game after E3.

first off, if last weeks mag scan news was true, Gamespy is supplying the netcode/backend to the DS online play, so there shouldn't be any worries about it being implemented poorly. And it's doubtful it would be anywhere near as broken as MK: DD lan play. but secondly and more importantly, why just assume that because nintendo has no prior experience with online play (which they actually do, but thats a whole other topic) that they would for some reason fuck it up. try waiting and seeing before making a decision. but the fact is, even a broken online mario kart is still an online mario kart. and who wouldn't want that.

You mean not having DS games multiplayer until after E3 right? Yes that would look bad for the public since the PSP is wireless out of the box.

I'm more worried that the only game that would be leading the charge is Animal Crossing and ignoring Metroid Prime Hunters and Mario Kart DS (both EXCELLENT games for their network). Actually I just want to play some of these classic franchises online, earlier is better but I just hope they are online.

I'm pretty sure Gamespy provides (shitty shitty) lobby/matchmaking, not gameplay netcode.

Why? There's no evidence that EAD learned anything from MK: DD. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but just as I have no evidence, neither do you, and history is on my side.

Saying Nintendo has online play experience is like saying I have game design experience because I had Shoot-Em-Up Construction Kit for my Amiga 2000. Moreover, the reason it's safe to assume fuckups is because history has shown this to be true. MS (excuse me, M$) had a astonishing amount of netcode resources at their disposal, yet the first batch of XBL games had crappy lobbies and so-so netcode. Same with Sony.
try waiting and seeing before making a decision. but the fact is, even a broken online mario kart is still an online mario kart. and who wouldn't want that.
I don't want a broken online mario kart because when it's critically panned Iwata/Miyamoto will point at it and say "see, we told you online was a fad!"

If any first-party multiplayer DS title shipping after July only has WLAN play and not online...

Good news about MK DS BTW.
