Mario Strikers Review

When all is said and done, Super Mario Strikers doesn’t offer much when it gets down to single-player gaming. Those looking for a fun multiplayer mode, though, will be happy with the game. Whether you play with two, three or four players, you’re in for some very action-packed soccer. The power-ups and back-and-forth action keeps things interesting. But we’ve got two complaints. Things could have been multiple-times-better if only this one was online and had just a little more depth. Even as is, though, Strikers makes an ideal multiplayer game for those GameCube multiplayer parties you know you want to hold.

Visuals 7.0
Things look good, but textures are a little blurry and the framerate has its ups and downs. Smooth animation and character model design is a plus.

Sound 5.0
In a word, forgettable. Play it with it up or down, and you probably won’t notice much of a difference. Average voice work for some character sound effects and bland music make up the audio side of Strikers.

Control 8.0
Easy and intuitive. Just the way you like it and the way you expect it from a Nintendo-published Mario game. Those things said, the lack of depth in regards to the controls disappoints in the long run.

Gameplay 7.0
The underlying gameplay is in fact very fun and enjoyable. The lack of a very good single-player mode really hurts overall, though. A good number of options for multiplayer and easy controls make up for this, though. After all, it is fun.

Replay 7.5
We want to score it higher, but because this game is so dependant on having people to play with you, we feel it’s only right to settle with the score you see. As a multiplayer game, Mario Strikers is a blast.

Verdict 7.0
A fun game. If you can get together four people that enjoy Mario sports games or soccer titles in general, you’ll find plenty of fun to be had. If you can’t, then don’t even bother.

+ Fun multiplayer modes
- Lackluster single-player mode
- No online play

Full Review

Uhh, I was expecting a little more, but hell at least the multiplayer experience sounds like it will be fun. I don't know why he even brings up online play, its pretty much a foregone conclusion that a GCN game will never feature such a mode despite how perfectly suited the gameplay is to it. This game would have been a hell of a lot of fun online though.

I'm not going to comment on the quality of this game, since I haven't played it and won't, but are people still complaining that GameCube games aren't online? Jesus Christ, GIVE IT UP ALREADY.

Sounds like Mario Baseball. There's a decent core game there but it seriously lacks depth. Nintendo really needs to consider the magic $20 price point. Even $30 would be okay. After getting burned by Mario Baseball for $50, I'm not touching this.

uh i went to an espn party tonight and im very drunk
and there was some NY giants football players there. my point is - who cares?

You should've taken the opportunity to tell Jeremy Shockey he got "JACKED UP!!"

Somewhere between seeing the videos for the first time and reading the reviews as they came in, it dropped from my fifth most anticipated title to my thirty-fourth or so. Looks like yet another Battalion Wars/Mario Power Tennis/Mario Kart Double Dash situation where I'll hold off until it's $20.

man i love reviews these days. 7.0 and it says "don't even bother" in the closing statement. I guess 0.0-0.5 is reserved for joke reviews.

We played the shit out of it at the Nintendo event... 4 players was FUN AS HELL, just like every other mario sports title. If you're getting this for a lot of multiplayer, add about 20% to any review...

SSS is my favorite non-UT multiplayer title of all time.

I am skeptical based on the review score, but since I only care about 4-player multiplay, maybe it doesn't matter.

I promise you it doesn't. It VERY MUCH has a SSS feel about it, and I played the hell out of SSS back in the day too.

I'm not trying to sell anyone on Mario Strikers or anything... I'm just saying those buying it mostly for multi won't be burned in the slightest. I dunno anything about the single player... never touched it. I was too busy getting my 4P on with Kohler and some NoA employees (him and I dominated, for the record).

I think you might be on to something there. I wouldn't pay $50 for Mario Golf, but at $20 I was very very pleased. And if I saw Mario Baseball at Ebgames or Gamestop for $20, I would jump all over it without even thinking, same goes for Mario Tennis. Now as for Strikers...for whatever reason I was going to buy this game on release. Don't ask me why, I'm not even a freaking soccer fan, but something has been drawing me to this game.

it was a great review; im glad amn had the online scoop, as they are a great site, but why the fuck do they mention online play?

That sounded like a random plug haha.. But yea your rants the same as mine, I read amn every once in a while.

'no online' - god, they are still using this as a negative point on the cube. that's bullshit.

I've been playing this game for 2 weeks now and I can tell you, the game is the most fun multiplayer sports title on the cube. well i guess if you don't like soccer this ain't for you. but it's a hell lot better than soccer slam.

I dunno, I sorta want to support Mario Strikers. FOR THE CHARACTER ART.

Peach is VA-VA-VOOM!

It'd have to be pretty daggone good to top Soccer Slam. Can you buy or unlock upgradeable equipment for team characters? That was half the fun in SSS.

Too bad the buddies I played Slam with have moved away, or this would be a day one purchase for me. Multiplayer made that game rock the house, but I don't think I played more than a couple games of single player.

trust me on this. mario strikers is FAR better than soccer slam!

Trust me, they are comparable in so many ways. For instance, they both have nothing to do with football/soccer, unlike Mario Golf or Tennis.

SSS wasn't all that good, so I'm not surprised. But I definitely did expect better since impressions were positive. I'll give it a shot.

The lack of online support is such a non-starter. If you want online fucking gaming, we know the GameCube is the last place you look. Why doesn't the reviewer add "No custom soundtrack" to the cons side and shit kick the score down further? Or maybe "Lack of dance mat support"? "Doesn't do my laundry"? "Wouldn't put out"?

Super Mario Strikers based on my own time with it, both in singe-player and multiplayer, has been a total blast. And I like the way there have been subtle "adult" touches added. Pay attention to those victory dances. For me it's all about the fun, and SMS is fun. Period.
