It's funny how many people have a clear agenda and are perpetually butt hurt about Naughty Dog and their success..

They released their massive AAA game in 2020 whereas Insomniac released their game in 2018. Insomniac followed that up with games that utilize the same engines and largely iterated on prior releases.

Uncharted 4 has a 93 and TLOU2 has a 93.

This is Insomniac's first 90 in 20 years and none of their games have reached as high as the previously mentioned games.

Uncharted 2 has a 96...

People who are trying to compare Insomniac and Naughty Dog are absolutely clueless. Naughty Dog's track record is clear and their games take more time to make but deliver significantly more critically and financially than Insomniac games and Naughty Dog owns their IP whereas Insomniac doesn't own Spider-Man.

For all we know, there won't be a Spider-Man 3... it all comes down to negotiations between Marvel and Sony. Obviously, they'll work something out, but that's not a sure thing.

Im very surprised that it was able to maintain 90+ after 120 reviews lol.
Same. Especially with the more well-known outlets, like IGN, GameSpot, and Eurogamer giving it an 8.

God of War: Ragnarok has 150-something reviews; I wonder if this game will eventually reach that number and what the score will be by then.

Because there's only so low an 8 can bring a score when the vast majority are 9 and up. Simple math.

Those bringing ND into the conversation need to get a grip. A number of Xbox studios haven’t released a game this gen, but nobody seems to be making a fuss about that fact.
If we're being fair, that's pretty much the butt of every joke in every other Xbox related thread. I'm no Xbox stan, just acknowledging that the one game XBox fans can count on playing every year is the waiting game.

My point was that the more well-known ones, the ones with more viewers, gave it lower scores. So I'm surprised so many others gave it higher. I haven't heard of a lot of these reviewers in the 9s and 10s.

You can't be right, TLOU2 had an insane budget and sold a huge amount but this will outsell that game with just its PS5 release potentially and I think the dev budget is lower here.

What you have't heard of is anecdotal. On top of that, again, we're tallking a small amount of 8s compared to the many, many higher reviews. The few 8s shouldn't determine the score and just because IGN or GameSpot gives a game an 8 doesn't mean everyone else has to follow suit.

I'm honestly not understanding what the correlation is supposed to be here.

It's insanely impressive but it's hyperbole to say there's ZERO loading.

The loading occurs as you hold down the button and the meter fills to confirm where you want to fast travel, and even after that there's a ~1s delay.

Again, SUPER IMPRESSIVE though.
Unlikely. That would mean that every time the player releases the button the system would have to clear the loaded data from the memory.
That delay is there to stop players from accidentally choosing the wrong location since that would mean the system would have to, unnecessarily, load and dump data into memory.
The loading is simply really fast and happens somewhere between the confirmation of the location and the end of the swinging animation.

For whatever reason, the more established any type of gaming outlet becomes, the more out of touch or controversial it becomes too.

Imagine scoring a game an 8, that is better than its predecessor in every way, and goes on to be amongst the best open world games and most talked about game for that year and the next months after its release, and goes on to being one of the best-selling games of the year. If that isn't being out of touch I don't now what else is.

Shows a clear disconnect between the material they put out and their audience and even their peers.

Just that, usually, if a game is in the 90s on Metacritic, at least, IGN will also have given it a 9.

Now I'm curious about what the last 90+ game was that didn't also get a 9 from at least one of those 3 outlets.

My goodness, give it a rest.

Edit- entire post gives me Linus vibes, screaming about the great pumpkin and whatnot.

I originally predicted an 89. After watching the launch trailer earlier today, I’d like to amend that score to a 91.

It might seem outlandish over a trailer, but I guess I didn’t realize how many big-name villains are in this one. It’s looking like the quintessential Spider-Man game and I had to up the score a bit.

Feeling like Nostradamus up in this bitch.

And damn, 120 reviews already? Is that pretty much all of them in the first day?

It can't be said enough how Insomniac was the best purchase in the industry in how cost-effective it was.
I was nervous as can be when Sunset Overdrive was announced for Xbox. I thought for certain, "holy shit, MS is gonna buy Insomniac because Sony is too dumb to bring them in as first party"

Insomniac joining Sony has been the one acquisition that I applauded because it made complete sense and should have happened ages ago.

I've said it in multiple threads but Insomniac has always been this good. They just didn't hit the massive sales numbers like other studios.

How many of those other games also see 120+ reviews? Have to consider that too.

The conversation is a bit more nuanced than this.

Insomniac not reaching 90+ metacritic for their games till now is felt unfair as many feel that most of their games which deserved it, missed it by a smidge or two for silly reasons. Hence why everyone seems excited for them to finally reach that pinnacle. For example, the main criticism of Tools of Destruction was that 'there was too much variety'. Some publications were really ridiculous back then with their ratings.

FWIW, NaughtyDog is my favourite studio but there's no question that Insomniac has literally carried the PS5 this generation. They've release 5 games this generation. 5. All quality titles. Haven't seen anything net new from Naughty Dog this generation.

Remember last generation they released how many games; like 3 or 4? Seems like they'll barely get 1 this generation. It just seems a bit low output, given how much they used to produce.

But maybe they're going the GaaS route, in which case.. more power to them.

Does NaughtyDog own their IP, or does Sony? I thought Sony owned NaughtyDog, therefore all IP is now Sony's IP - tbf I don't know how copyrights work. Isn't Spiderman also owned by Sony, not Marvel?

Damn. I'm not into superhero stuff at all, but those graphics are incredible looking.
You don't have to be itno superheros to like good games. I couldn't care less about DC or Marvel, don't watch the movies, but I'm all over these Insomniac Spider-man games.
To me it's more like playing Infamous or something.

This is proof that Disney/Marvel is stupid for even letting other studios touch their franchises for video games.. like what is even the point? Can any of them reach the heights that Insomniac set with the first SM game, let alone this one?
I mean what exactly is the alternative, wait for Insomniac to make them all lol
