That, as a result of Disney’s highest single shareholder and Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter’s anger with Fox Studios over negotiations regarding the film-and-related rights to The Fantastic Four, that Marvel would cancel the Fantastic Four comic rather than provide any promotion, however small it might be, towards the Fox Studios film. Merchandise and licenses were scrapped and even Fantastic Four posters in the offices were pulled down lest Perlmutter see one and have his ire raised. It may not have been logical, but it was a decision born of personal emotion. It was steadied by sense. X-Men wasn’t cancelled, for example as the Xbooks sell so well. But Fantastic Four? It may have been the first book of the Marvel Universe, but its sales have continued to drag, even after multiple relaunches with high profile creators. There would be less of a hit to the bottom line if this comic was dropped.

Now the catalogues of Hachette, Marvel’s bookstore distributor, seems to confirm the cancellation at least. With June’s solicitation for James Robinson and Leonard Kirk‘s Fantastic Four: The End Is Fourever.

THE END IS FOUREVER! Witness the closing act on the First Family of the Marvel Universe! THE INVADERS meet the FANTASTIC FOUR as the hunt for REED RICHARDS and the missing kids of the FUTURE FOUNDATION continues. Meanwhile the mastermind behind everything unveils his ultimate plan. But how does FRANKLIN RICHARDS factor in? And how does this all lead to…The END?! Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR #642-644 and the Triple Sized Final Issue 645!

Expect the announcement of the cancellation of The Fantastic Four at NYCC. And expect a story-based reason for the cancellation – that they have a great final story for the team and want to give it impact.

First Death of Wolverine, and now this. I can understand Marvel being pissed at Fox holding onto the FF rights, considering how perfect a fit it would have been in the MCU.

It sucks so hard that marvel had to sell off the movie rights like they did. With how well Marvel has done with new Hulk and all the other Avengers movies they could probably, unlike Fox make an amazing Fantastic Four film. :(

they would have gone bankrupt had they not sold the rights, so they would have never been in the position to make those films in the first place.

They didn't want to disappoint the 7 people that would go see the movie and pick the comic only to wonder why they couldn't do shit like that on the big screen.

Let them cancel the book for awhile, these relaunches have all been bad since Hickman left

Yep, pick up Hickman's two omnibus collections of his Fantastic Four/FF run, the second volume is out in novemberish, and hold out until the dust settles.

This is going to hurt FOX so hard. What would they do without the promotion of a struggling, failing comic book series? They're generating more press by announcing this cancellation instead of just dropping it.

Yeah it sucks, but you have to wonder whether Marvel would have taken the risk to create the GoTG movie or build the MCU like they did if they could just rely on doing Xmen and Spiderman over and over.

I'm not sure butthurt is the right term to use here (or ever maybe). It seems like a good business decision to not give your competitors free advertising, that is unless the comics were selling especially well in the first place.

Sales have been terrible(for a headliner book like FF) since the end of The Future Foundation.

Well it says it was a decision born out of personal emotion, sounds like the correct time to use the term "butthurt".

well it is more than the cancellation of a monthly series.

Bleeding Cool is basically the Perez Hilton of Comic journalism.

Reed and Sue are featured pretty prominently in Hickman's last Avengers arc. Something larger might be up.

If I was Marvel I'd cancel Xmen as well.

Actually I'd look into canceling the whole comics division itself.
No way that it can be making good money.

How does the rights of Xmen and FF expire?

I heard some time ago that if Fox doesn't do an X-men movie after some years since the last one, the rights expire. It's the same with FF?

In other words: The only thing marvel can do to retake FF is buying it to Fox?

I can see them being in different books but there will be no book headlining them .

It's not just the comics. Chris Claremont confirmed that Marvel shut down any new X-Men or F4 merchandise recently. Some merchandise that was made before the mandate did slip through, but don't expect anymore. That's probably gonna hurt Fox more. Not to mention the lack of a cartoon or their non-existence in Disney Infinity (for the kids).

Which is stupid because in the case of X-men the movies are bigger than the comics.
FOX is actually opening new people up to X-men and Marvel is so butthurt they are turning that new business away.

Most of the stories you are seeing in the Marvel movies make liberal use of story lines from the last decade of Marvel comics.

What?

It's getting canceled because it sells like shit.

This thread title isn't even correct.

You do this a lot.

Yeah, fox will never let either rights expire. Same with Sony and spiderman.

But Marvel seems to be on better terms with Sony than Fox, and there's even rumors that Spider-Man may appear in an MCU film in exchange for Marvel/Disney co-financing the next Spider-Man film.
