What?

It's getting canceled because it sells like shit.

This thread title isn't even correct.

You do this a lot.

The article states that Perlmutter being pissed at Fox is the reason for the FF cancellation, so I'd say the thread title is correct.

Release Ant-Man on the same day as Fantastic Four. Market the shit out of it. Never let another Fantastic Four film be profitable.

Fuck 'em up, Marvel..

fantastic four probably

Na. More people went to go see Punisher War Zone in theatres than there are monthly comics readers period, and that film flopped. The direct comics market probably sells to a group of around 500k people. 500k admissions is $4-5M at the box office.

I would totally see a movie with FF and The Avengers, with Doom somewhere in there. I think it would work well.

where is it the other way around?
Well good point, though I would say X-men is almost so big to a level that they are stupid they aren't trying to funnel that into comics, cartoons and merchandise which Marvel completely owns.

Something like Punisher though the IP itself is probably as valuable to Marvel as its box-office take. That was something that Marvel could realistically pull support and probably get it back soon.

Fox is going to have at least 2 more X-Men movies and Deadpool, Marvel should just ride Fox's wave till they crash it into the ground(which could be hard considering they recovered from X3 & Origins)

Nope not sales, can't be that.

It's kind of circular, catch 22 logic, though.

They have no reason to market it, because it isn't very profitable, and they don't have the film rights.

They don't have the film rights, so they don't bother to market it, and thus it isn't very profitable.

Ultimately, those comics would be selling much better if Marvel had the rights to make Fantastic Four films.

These things go in cycles, Xmen were the hot shit, now it is teh Avengers, FF had a good time in the 90s.

How much did the F4 movies make? Fox must have some reason to want to hold on so adamantly to some franchise they don't seem to give a shit about.

Is cancelling the comic books really going hurt the movie? The effect will be negligible compared to say.. Fox releasing another really shitty FF movie.

they did around $300 million on $100 million budgets. no huge successes but they came out before the entire MCU. Can't fault them for trying again.

But they are going in cycles because of the films. X-Men films brought attention to those characters. The Avengers films have done the same. Similarly, the Guardians of the Galaxy comics only sell so much because of the movie.

Fantastic Four doesn't really stand a chance next to the big, cinematic characters.

Not this alone, but alongside the lack of new merchandise that wasn't already made before the cut-off point & the lack of a new cartoon.

Nope more like DC cancelling Green Lantern. Fantastic Four was super popular back in the 60's due the relationship between the characters and the fact that it had one of the first weddings on comics (and they respected the marriage between Sue and Richards) but times change and the elements that ade FF popular are now common in almost every media.

But Marvel seems to be on better terms with Sony than Fox, and there's even rumors that Spider-Man may appear in an MCU film in exchange for Marvel/Disney co-financing the next Spider-Man film.

its not like Sony has been doing that well with the Spidey lately anyway, hence their willingness to negotiate.

what I do want to know is whether Fox has the rights to merchandise based on the movies or not. Sony used to for Spidey but in renegotiation they lost them to Disney.

Yeah, but FF has been handled like poop from a butt in Fox's hands.

But FF also hasn't been well handled by Marvel....

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Sad, but the runs following Hickmans have been dull and shite and the sales are no surprise. Nothing is keeping you coming back each month at all.

To pile it on, Ultimate Fantastic Four was always shit as well and only guff like "EVIL REED" kept them relevant. Johnny was better in Ultimate Spider-Man too.

I sincerely hoped the current Fox FF film didn't pan out so rights would have reverted and we could have had Reed and Doom sciencing it up with Stark and Banner, but alas, we get Chronicle 2: Branded Superhero Edition instead.

Avengers and X-Men sales were unchanged when their films came out. Guardians started selling well because Marvel started pushing the property a year before the film was released. Comic book films don't really bring that many new readers to comics.

X-men's popularity was on the declined before the first movie. They haven't exactly raised, not like the 90s when they were printing money. Fantastic Four could easily be a billion dollar franchise, easy. Fox just don't want to put the money and effort into it.

The article states that Perlmutter being pissed at Fox is the reason for the FF cancellation, so I'd say the thread title is correct.

But it's not the reason for the cancellation. Shit sales are. Any modicum of common sense applied to the tabloid you're reading bears this out.

You're often responsible for the entertainment equivalent of shouting "BREAKING NEWS" and then reading everybody a Daily Currant headline.

That's a shame. My parents had an omnibus of the first 50 FF issues and I read through that book so much when I was a kid. They were my favorite team back then. It's a shame that there have been so many bumps for the FF and that it's all coming down to this.

It sucks so hard that marvel had to sell off the movie rights like they did. With how well Marvel has done with new Hulk and all the other Avengers movies they could probably, unlike Fox make an amazing Fantastic Four film. :(
You say that but if Marvel had X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spiderman and anything else they've lost then perhaps we wouldn't have the great MCU we have now.

At least it has given us GOTG, right?

I never cared for FF even when I was huge into comics (and I only read Marvel). Doom is amazing but thats about it from that franchise for me

It's not just the comics. Chris Claremont confirmed that Marvel shut down any new X-Men or F4 merchandise recently. Some merchandise that was made before the mandate did slip through, but don't expect anymore. That's probably gonna hurt Fox more. Not to mention the lack of a cartoon or their non-existence in Disney Infinity (for the kids).

But that has been going on for a long time, it is nothing new. In the end, it is one big company trying to hide a failing brand by blaming it on sour business relations.

Never mix business with emotions. Isn't that like one of the major rules behind a good business man? Of course Fox/Sony are gonna hold on to their Marvel properties with all their power after Marvel movies have been nothing but cash cows.

Not that Fox is being very smart about it either. Instead of just trying to milk FF for maybe 2 movies max over a 10 year period they could've joined MCU even with a small percentage of profits and been able to make many more movies.

I hate the Fanrasric Four but Dr Doom as the big threat in an Avengers film would have been epic. Why does Fox want Fantastic Four? Both movies under performed.

The merchandise shut-out is recent, for both X-Men & F4.
