Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite Characters and Stages Roster Discussion Thread

The original mvc 3 has a better charcters select screen then umvc 3 definately. I got tired of looking at the comic book one in ultimate.

I really hope the presentation is as good as UMvC3's. I loved the comic book aesthetic that game had, but I remember Vanilla 3 being kind of barebones and generic looking.
Vanilla was super cool with how your team formed a comic book cover of sorts.

I prefer the character select grid to the UMvC3 book too TBH.

Marvel could probably just request certain characters be in the game without telling Capcom anything about upcoming movies.

Yeah I doubt Capcom had any insider information regarding upcoming MCU developments. NOW? It might be kind of different if Marvel wants Capcom to base a DLC around MCU events, say the Defenders (might tell them to release say Misty, Colleen, Jessica, Stick, Weavers villain character, and Elektra right as the Defenders releases) or tell them the villains of Thor: Ragnarok way before anyone else if they were planning a DLC for that movie specifically.

Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel Entertainment doesn't even tell even Marvel GAMES about their movies. Stuff at Marvel is super secret. They probably just tell them what to focus on at a specific time

This is likely it. Kinda like with Rocket Raccoon in MVC3, Marvel probably requests to have certain characters to be included without even mentioning potential non-video game media to come.

Eagerly anticipating Galactus saying he's gonna crush me like the bug that I am as he falls into nothingness AGAIN

You don't have to worry about that, considering the Fox ban on the initial roster.

But yeah, something really did feel rushed about Galactus's fight. There's only two phases (whereas other bosses in the Versus series like Yami and Abyss had three), and there's actually unused dialogue of Galactus hollering in defeat in the game's gallery that went completely unused. Seems to me there was going to be a third phase to his fight that wasn't finished.

I have no idea what's up with newer Capcom games, but they should definitely dig up Vanessa Z. Schneider from P.N. 03 with her flamboyant moves.

Put Jill Valentine in, then just clone her for Vanessa again.

I need Gene in this game. I remember Capcom saying he was high up on popularity pools and almost made the cut in UMvC3.

Please make my dreams come true Capcom!

Was playing some Marvel today to get me hype

Wow this game is a travesty. You load up the title screen, and guess what you're greeted with? A classic Marvel character? Some balance between the Marvelites and the new folk in action? Naw Heck no. You get a lone portrait of OC garbage who actually one can't even name or identify until they progress near the end of the entire story mode.

I would give them the teensiest tiniest pass if ANY of these characters were interesting, but when one of them is literally Lex Luthor my sympathies bottom out to negative zero. It's as though they were struggling to design them, new characters that could stand with icons -- but if you're struggling at the main concept of your game then maybe you should rethink your concept!?

But forget about them and about the edgy aggressive colorless portrayals of the Marvel characters themselves, fatalities and all, spitting in the face of everything they stand for, the gameplay is just not good although I feel there was room for improvement that a wise sequel could have made really fun. 3D superhero arena fighter! It even sounds fun on paper, but this game's idea of fun is choosing which out of 3 Marvel heroes you will canonically murder in order to progress in the story mode.

"We call that a web-slinging ass-kicking!" - Peter Parker

Might as well do the Capcom side (Excluding franchises that tend to have a larger amount of character inclusion)...

Hinata or Akira (Rival Schools)
Nilin (Remember Me)
Rouge (Power Stone)
Regina (Dino Crisis)
June (Star Gladiator)
Mercedes (Dragon's Dogma)
Diana or Pink Ostrich (Battle Circuit)
Nina (Breath of Fire)
Kasuga, Oichi or Nouhime (Sengoku Basara)
Ton Pooh (Strider)
Sexy Silvia (Viewtiful Joe)
Vanessa (P.N.03)
Maki (Final Fight)
Devilotte (Cyberbots)
Franziska (Ace Attorney)
Daniella (Haunting Ground)
Saki (Quiz Nanairo Dreams)
Tessa (Red Earth)
Ingrid (???)

All I got, started getting a headache at this point lol.

Since Crystal controls the elements, think they'd make her a storm clone?

I mean, I think Crystal has a lot of potential for a unique moveset but...
I think being able to control all four elements would mean she would have a lot more potential than being just a Storm clone. She can command wind, earth/metal, fire/electricity, water/ice--she's basically Nickelodeon's the Avatar, but can also fly and control the weather.

Lol I remember the exact same jazz about Tieri's story for MVC3. Color me skeptical.

The difference here is the press release said there'd be a cinematic story. MVC3 said there'd be more emphasis on the story than the previous game. I don't think the situation is comparable.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. I'll also hope he and whoever did the win quotes did more apparent research than just looking up a few Wiki articles for the Capcom side.

What was wrong with the actual win quotes, though? Any examples?

The Phoenix Wright winquotes were so ass, lol.

The most interesting ones were the ones across sides. Dormammu being aware of who Mundus is, for example is pretty cool, and Akuma referencing Age of Apocalypse and MSHvSF was neat. Hopefully the Capcom ones are a bit more thoughtful all around.

the mention of Proxima Midnight has me thinking about how the rest of her team would function. I mean Corvus and Black Dwarf are pretty self-explanatory but Supergiant would be a weird one.

Supergiant would be easy. Give her some basic martial arts, and otherwise have her do like psychic shockwaves and maybe stuff like inverting controls or something.
Ebony Maw though...

You're talking about Marvel Nemesis, right?

Yeah, those were some pretty dark times. Kinda sad to see Capcom lose the Marvel licence only for us to immediately get that garbage soon after. Thanks a lot EA.

I'd love it if RE4 Leon got in. Aside from that, I don't really mind who gets in except for more Darkstalkers and Rival Schools characters, and maybe an SF3 character who wasn't in 4 or 5. That would be great too.

Even SFV has a Cinematoc Story Mode, so MvCI kinda has to measure up, now.

actually, all jokea aside, how DID that turn out anyway? I had long stopped playing SF5 when it came out, was it any good?

For better or for worse, it was like playing through an 80's anime. As long as you didn't have any unrealistic expectations, it was fun to play through.

Highlights include:

Nash getting BODIED
Zangief breaking a mystical steel sword.... by flexing when it hit his chest
R.Mika and Ibuki having a friendship
Decapre shows up
Juri travels to another continent on her bike in a few hours.

It was nothing special.

I remember when they said 'Hot Ryu' would be part of the story at some point, being a canonical outfit.. But nothing.

Also, Dictator's story outfit was never used. Which bothered me a lot.

Nash was brought back to be a joke.

Necalli was a waste.

Rashid also ended up having the best arc of the cast & turned out to be the hero of the story, while F.A.N.G ended up being more entertaining & integral to the story than I expected. Of anyone, these two were the most memorable from SFV's story.

Agreed. Rashid in particular turned out to be a much better character than I anticipated.

Scarlet Witch is sadly tied up with the Fox stuff, as no game (outside of Lego Avengers) was able to use her or Quicksilver. Viper may fall under the same situation as the Maximoff Twins, since she was featured in The Wolverine.

It's probable for the Maximoff Twins. Like Lego Avengers though, if Marvel wants to push the two "Miracles" I'm sure they could do it without much trouble.

As for Viper, that would be strange since she was originally a Captain America character, then Avengers character. She does get entangled with the X-Men often, but so do a lot of villains. That's interesting though, I'd be curious to know her exact status.

So if Ant-Man gets in, who do you think it will be? Hank or Scott?
I think it's most likely Scott.

What was wrong with the actual win quotes, though? Any examples?

Seven Force above already talks about how Phoenix Wright's quotes already showcases how they likely had little/no idea about what to do with him.

But for me, the main disappointment was seeing how characters like Morrigan, for example, were handled in TvC, compared to MvC3. We go from a line like this, where after defeating Viewtiful Joe in TvC, she says...

"I had such high hopes for you, especially after Alastor's words of praise."

...to not having anything memorable to say to any of the Team DMC members, Arthur, Firebrand, Strange, Dormmamu, or copy-pasting her quip to Joe again, in MvC3? Y'know, the characters that either deal with denizens of Demon Worlds on a regular basis, or live in them?

It's like they focused on Morrigan's kinks & innuendos, and completely glossed over the fact that she's really just a bored member of the Demon World's nobility looking for her next thrill. You'd think she'd have plenty to say to the sons of Sparda, Astaroth's regular pain in the ass, the Red Blaze or someone who looks like one of Pyron or Jedah's drinking buddies (like she did to Onslaught in MvC1), but nope!

The more you look at the Capcom side, the more these types of "missed opportunities" are apparent. And it only gets sadder when you consider how the likes of SNK and Monolithsoft (Project X Zone) clearly did their homework better.

[/rant]

So...all that to say, if the same MvC3 crew is back again, I hope they do better this time.

Amaterasu's win quotes in particular stuck out like a sore thumb for being as rudimentary as they could have possibly been.

I appreciated the abundance of match-up specific dialogue, though, especially when put next to SF4 or MVC2, which had nothing of the sort.

The problem is that Lego Avengers was the only game that could get the Maximoff Twins. Not even Disney Infinity could get them for 3.0 (if I recall, both Twins were supposed to get figures for 3.0 alongside Vision, Ant-Man, Ultron, Black Panther, & some others).
