Not sure if I’m right about this but it could simply be because Italy might have a higher elderly population compared to Germany.

Italy
0-14 years: 13.6% (male 4,326,862 /female 4,136,562)
15-24 years: 9.61% (male 2,994,651 /female 2,984,172)
25-54 years: 41.82% (male 12,845,442 /female 13,183,240)
55-64 years: 13.29% (male 4,012,640 /female 4,261,956)
65 years and over: 21.69% (male 5,817,819 /female 7,683,330) (2018 est.)

Obesity - adult prevalence rate19.9% (2016)

NYC update

I heard that the neighborhood of Borough Park, Brooklyn (comprised largely of religious Hasidic Jewish people who, due to religious practices, have historically had a high incidence of various bacterial/virus outbreaks) had 100 new cases in one day, and is actually the most concentrated cluster of cases in the US now. Many folks in NYC are advocating that it be quarantined the way New Rochelle was a couple of weeks ago.

Because the mentality with this will be:
  • Chloroquine + Zinc = good
  • I can't get Chloroquine
  • Therefore people will assume, zinc = half as good, which is better than nothing
  • Therefore, people will scramble to buy
Honestly, it's not too difficult to get chloroquine (or did not used to be) - basically goto a travel clinic, say you're going to a malaria infested location (ie. a safari in Africa) and they'll generally give you atovaquone. Say you're allergic to it, and they dispensed chloroquine.

That might be tricky now given people aren’t really doing holidays abroad anymore.

Got some toilet paper today. Just happened to be at the right store when they brought out a pallet .

Well again the data shows 99% had an underlying condition, and 98% of deaths over 60. Only 17 people out of 2500 or so (or there numbers on March 17th) were under 50, and all deaths under 40 had serious conditions.

So you are right on the old people thing.

Young people will get sick, some might die, but keeping it away from the elderly is key. I mean when you only have 17 deaths out of 2500 under 50 it should be clear that the old are at the most danger. I know someone just posted a story of a 34 year old dying, and those one offs will happen, but every where we have data from points to the same thing. >1% under 40 years old deaths.

As a Jew I will say this, the chasids out there are not taking this seriously. They need to wise up because soon people are going to use that as an excuse to hate on Jews. These dummies need to put their Torah's down and start obeying the rules. I saw a video the other day of 770 still open with all of them going about their usual day to day stuffed in the small synagoge praying etc...

(770 is a famous chasidic synagoge).

Now I did read that they agreed to start following Trump after a call with him. But its going to get ugly if they don't start following the quarantine rules. And I will blame them for their own stupidity. We even have rules in the Torah that allow Jews to break from following it when there are these types of pandemics/calamities.

At this point I would 100% agree with measures being taken because I am afraid they won't listen. And if the government doesn't step in I am worried about street justice.

New Uk Numbers., 3269 (+643) a gain of 24% on the day before of 2626 (down 10% on the previous rise). 64K tests carried out though, which is about 8K more than yesterday). The death rate is around 4.4%

With Home-working being pushed and schools breaking up it will be interesting to see how the numbers go after the weekend, but I fully expect we'll likely break 5K by Monday given the current pace.

Well that was my scenario. We close the hospitals basically and say if you got it you either recover or you die. Like it was 1890 and we didnt have all these respirstord and ICUs etc....

If we had millions dead do you think it would still break down along the same age lines?

Clearly we will never close hospitals but wondering if it got so bad that hospitals just closed how bad people think it will get.

I figure if it got to that point to protect the elderly we would probably lock them away and then force everyone else to just deal with it.
What constitutes elderly? Just a reminder that 40% of the US workforce is 55+. So roughly 600000 of them dead. Senior managers, master electricians, foremen, senior engineers, master plumbers etc. Roughly 200000 of the 26 - 54 age group also dead.
So assuming we could keep all those over 60 completely segregated for years and death rates don't change when hospital treatment is denied only maybe a million lost from the workforce long term but short term maybe 2 or 3 million would be out due to illness.
So for deaths just 2x US WWII casualties plus 4 x US Vietnam casualties. And the entire 47 million 65+ population in several years of perfect isolation.
If that isolation fails then expect another 10 million or so deaths.

I am not going to be its just the flu but

from 18-49 about 5500 people died from regular flu.

People can die from anything, young people included. Until we get actual data we have to go with the numbers that show deaths under 50 are rare.

Italy the epicenter of it all only had 17 deaths under the age of 50. Out of 2500 or so.

Of course this is serious disease, but I keep seeing ancdetotes about young people crowding hospitals and or dying, but every single data point shows the opposite.

Of course this is not reassuring to those above 50. And if you are in your 70's or over then this is really deadly so there is no comfort to those people that young people are surviving.

The supermarkets are completely messed up here in London. No home delivery slots for 3 weeks and massive queues from 6 a.m. in the morning resulting in many shelves stripped bare before noon. They have introduced purchase limits, but that has done little to improve the situation. The people hoarding items and reselling them online are fucking it up for everyone else.

Americans practice this chaos every year on Black Friday. 💪

Aside from the bizarre obsession with tp and hand-sanitizer, most supermarkets seem to be handling it well. Stores in our area have purchase limits on staples like eggs, milk, flour, etc and won't check people out who try to buy more. Mind you, these limits are like 5 gallons of milk max and 6 dozen eggs max, we're not talking about actual rationing.

I've never seen anything like it. Even during Christmas, it has never this been this bad. I went to five big supermarkets in my area and they all had the same situation: rows of empty shelves. Thankfully I have some back-up which I've built up over the years, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried.

Buy staple ingredients. Panicked buyers tend to buy stupid things and they leave a lot of the useful stuff behind.

Hopefully once some countries get over the worst, they can begin reaching out to others to provide relief.

Just got off the phone with my dad who has had his friend over who is a BART cop in the Bay Area. My mom told me and I was like, wtf? They are both 70+ and he has been hanging out with a cop from one of the major transports? Hell naw. He's going to let him know they are going to lock it down in their home for now.

Plaquneil+azitromycin could cure you.

This could hopefully be good in relieving the stress on hospitals, unless of course it requires a long stay in ICU. then we will have to wait weeks for beds to clear up.
