3 members of the Philadelphia 76ers organization test positive for coronavirus

The Philadelphia 76ers announced Thursday that three members of its organization have tested positive for COVID-19.
"Three individuals have received positive test results for COVID-19. All other tests results are currently negative. We have reported this information to state and local health authorities as required," the team's statement said.
"Pursuant to CDC guidelines, the individuals are in self-isolation and will be monitored closely by medical professionals. The health of our players, staff, fans and community is paramount, and we continue to be guided by medical experts at this time."
The organization did not identify the three members.

New York City expected to run out of medical supplies in 2 to 3 weeks

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city is two to three weeks away from running out of medical supplies.

According to De Blasio, the city needs these items:

  • 3 million N95 masks
  • 50 million surgical masks
  • 15,000 ventilators
  • 25 million each of personal protective equipment, surgical gowns, coveralls, gloves and face masks

California governor projects "56% of state's population will be infected" in the next 8 weeks
From CNN's Cheri Mossburg

California Gov. Gavin Newsom described in letter to President Trump on Thursday the impact coronavirus will have on the state and its residents.

“We project that roughly 56% of our state’s population – 25.5 million people – will be infected with the virus over an eight-week period,” he said.
He asked that the US Navy’s Mercy Hospital Ship be stationed at the port of Los Angeles. Defense officials tell CNN the ship will head to the Seattle area in the next five to 10 days. The final destination could always change depending on civilian needs, an official cautioned.

Newsom said the hospital ship “will help decompress the health care system to allow the Los Angeles region to ensure that it has the ability to address critical acute care needs.”

The G7 will no longer be at Camp David. It will now be a video conference.
President Trump has made the G7 a video teleconference and canceled the Camp David venue, according to White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere.
“In order for each country to focus all of its resources on responding to the health and economic challenges of COVID-19 and at President Trump’s direction, National Economic Council Director and U.S. Sherpa for the 2020 G7 Larry Kudlow has informed his Sherpa colleagues that the G7 Leaders’ Summit the U.S. was set to host in June at Camp David will now be done by video-teleconference."
Deere continued: "The White House also informed the other G7 members that in order to continue close coordination, the President will convene the Leaders’ via video teleconference in April and May just as he did this week.”

Whereabouts are you?

Hopefully it's just the normal flu

Some numbers make no sense for New york needs unless you expect something very strong.

Scary if they are right...

PA just said it was closing all non essential physical businesses effective at 8. I drive to a person's house to install and repair dog fences. Looks like I can definitely repair and maintain equipment but it doesn't seem to say what to do for my situation. I THINK I'm ok because of the fact that I'm not a physical store front.

Good news is that there's no word of community spread (yet). That's a matter of time, though.

An unidentified player for the NBA's Boston Celtics has tested positive for coronavirus, the team announced Thursday evening.

The player is not exhibiting any symptoms, and testing was done after the player's exposure to a known positive case, the team said.

Several airports want to close in wake of pandemic
From CNN's Geneva Sands

The Federal Aviation Administration has received several requests from federally-funded airports, asking to close and restrict airport access, according to the agency.

The FAA generally does not allow closure of airports that receive federal funds and any request must be approved by the agency.

The agency is reviewing requests from Puerto Rico and Tangier, Virginia, an island town located in the Chesapeake Bay.

Earlier Thursday, CNN reported that Puerto Rico's governor, Wanda Vazquez Garced, wanted to redirect all flights to enter through the international airport to centralize screenings. "It's severe but I think we can" work with the FAA on this, she said.

According to the FAA, Vázquez and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority submitted proposals to restrict airport access and close airports in Puerto Rico. Additionally, the town of Tangier, in Virginia, wants FAA approval to close Tangier Island Airport.

Can someone explain all this hysteria to me?

Sorry, I haven’t read all 13k posts so this may have been addressed, but by the way people are acting you’d think the mortality rate is 90%. It’s not as low as the flu, but still fairly low. What warrants the nigh entire shutdown of society like this?

From what I’ve researched about this virus, I’m having trouble jiving it with watching the entire globe go utterly apeshit and losing its mind. What am I missing?

Nothing official, but according to a medical doctor friend of mine he thinks I’ve got it.

He says the fever element is a red herring. Yes lots get a fever, but these are the hospitalised people rather than those with mild symptoms. The overwhelming common factor is the dry cough.

I actually feel fine, but every now and then the most horrendous cough comes out of nowhere and just keeps going. I’ve had it for almost a week. Luckily I’ve been away from work for several days and will be working from home. Friends have come forward saying they’ll drop off essentials at my door. Times like these really show that some of us are genuinely good people.

Lots of sports stars coming down with this.. amazing how they managed to get tested so fast.. but they all seem perfectly fine. Looks like a ton of young healthy people will be walking around spreading this all over as we thought.

It's the economic impact of it.

People get sick = forces businesses to close = people are temporarily out of work.

As the virus spreads, it thus forces even more closures of both private and public space.

Also, the hospitals themselves are being overwhelmed. It's not everyday you just fill a bed with 10,000 people like in Italy or China. Especially when victims of the disease will need to be put in intensive care units, which costs money.

Also, some companies are completely going out of business. A Quebec Circus company announced they had to layoff 95% of their staff today.

Fast spreading virus, very dangerous for old folks but has a long incubation period so you could have it, be spreading it, and not know it for a two week period.

How many public door handles do you touch in that time before you realize you have it? A lot.

Anyway... at the end of the day, Trump's fault.

The issue is this apparently spreads like fire, and while the deaths so far have mostly been old people (and young outliers typically with pre-existing conditions), it has the potential to overload medical systems everywhere with the amount of sick people that could be generated by this. Thus leading to deaths of all ages as appropriate help is unavailable.

I was on the bus the other day returning home and saw many people in bars and restaurants despite UK government advice to stay away from such places. It seems as if sections of the British population simply don't care. I wonder if enforced bans will have to come into effect to stop these people gathering. I can see it happening.

No one wants to die. If this was 100 years ago we wouldn't have the tech to keep people alive so a bunch of 60 70 and 80 year olds would die. Some 50 and 60 years too but not as much. And then the occasionally young person.

We have the tech and ability to save people so no one wants to be responsible for even a single death.

Either way looks like we will get to that point sometime within the next 3 months. Italy seems to be saying they are on the verge of collapse so if they have to close their hospitals we will see how many people die. Pneumonia's a bitch.

I think though its possible we find a cocktail of already existing drugs in the next few months that could help 70-90% of those infected and its enough to get the world back on track. But you aint going anywhere without a temperature check and your mask and gloves for maybe the next 12 months.

This is the Italian army moving coffins from Bergamo to another region, because graveyards are at full capacity.

You know your just as likely to catch it on the bus as in a restaurant or bar? The virus stays contagious on surfaces for a long time such as seats or handrails. if someone coughed on the bus, got off and you got on those droplets are In The air inside the bus. If your worried that much you should have self quarantined already.

Some people don't have a choice but to take the bus.

I had to ask a favor from a family friend to drive me to my doctor and home to avoid it myself.

Yeah I know, that's why I have minimised my use of public transport in the past few weeks, and when I do get on I do my best to seek one that is almost empty (I don't drive so I need to get on a bus).
The point is the government has specifically asked people to stop going to bars, clubs and restaurants because people are closely packed together and there are more infection vectors, yet many still continue to do so.

Lombardy has a population of 10 million, it isn't built to have the capacity of 100's of dead a day.

There really isn't anything that can be done except social distancing and constant monititirng. Its a virus until we have drugs for it you can't really stop it without ending human contact.

Wait till after this and we try to put China in check. That will be interesting.

Even without international sanctions we could see something big. Just having companies naturally pull back factories and cease doing business could force their hand, and lead to economic strife in China that causes them to go to war for resources, etc. Not definite, for sure, and unlikely, but possible. Even a Chinese Revolution could technically occur if they bounce from mishandling Corona to a full on depression due to economic collapse. That depends on whether we believe China's numbers.
