Mass Effect 3 review thread

It’s a game that you simply must play; one of those titles that will be remembered alongside GoldenEye, Metal Gear Solid, Halo and Ocarina of Time as one of the greatest games of all time. BioWare hasn’t just raised the bar; it’s sent it thundering into orbit.

Heh... you know I could see Mass Effect 1 up there. But not the sequels, they lack the magic, first time awe of ME1.

Do the reviews address the issues a lot of gamers had with the demo? For example:

- No controller support on PC

why is this a problem exactly? the first two games didn't either

there are a lot of valid complaints from your initial list but things like this just come across as nitpicking

There are a lot of people who got their PCs hooked up to their HDTVs. M/K ain't exactly convenient on a couch.

The fact that ME never had controller support is no excuse but evidence that Bioware is freaking lazy.

Expecting controller support in 2012 and from the third entry in a successful series is anything but nitpicky.

Do the reviews address the issues a lot of gamers had with the demo? For example:

- Outdated graphics
- Embarassing running animations
- HORRIBLE clothing textures
- No weapon holstering, not even on PC
- Lip sync is awful
- No controller support on PC
- Disgraceful writing quality; I repeat, dis-grace-ful.
- No trial as initially promised
- No inventory
- One button for everything even on PC

yeah it's weird. I like Mass Effect a lot. Played both 1 and 3 and i was thinking i'd play 3 on release.
But then i played the demo... The demo was so horrible in many ways, that i instantly lost the need to play part 3.. The writing, the amount of inactivity while watching cutscenes, the horrible animations, etc.

Still, when i look at the reviews and i see the core gameplay, i see why i love the series so much.

I'm still a bit on the fence really, but i guess i will play it.

I play games mostly on PC and I enjoy the gamepad for the comfort (you don't get carpal tunnel from it). This game I believe was designed to be played on the gamepad.

Stellar reviews. Not that I needed them. The demo was awesome, and it can't arrive from Amazon soon enough. Will also purchase and devour any and all non-multiplayer DLC.

Some reviews seems to be for both ps3 and 360, so both version are identical and they've fixed all the framerate issues from the ps3 demo :o?

No way in hell this game can be 10/10 after that demo :lol
But I will give it a try. Those reviews are crazy, though. It seems like every "journalist" tries to put as many superlatives on top of other superlative to push this game it seems.

GTAIV has a friend it seems.

Not as crazy as judging review scores (from people who have played the full game) on a demo.

I understand why people care... but the game is better with KB/M = Hotkeys anyways IMO.

The downside to the 360 version is the need to swap discs; this doesn’t just happen once or twice during the story like in Mass Effect 2; this happened five times for me.

from gameinformer. WTF I thought the game was all on 1 disc this time.

Haven't played the game so can't judge the rightness of the scores, but the problem with rushing reviews of a large game like this out is there is zero time to sit back and reflect. In the rush of the ending, you'll probably forget or forgive problems you had up to that moment.

That mean imply that these reviewers actually think for themselves and don't just respond to pure marketing money. Obviously, since they would rather give a GOTY SUPAR GAME to everything that is released with a large budget, they
obviously don't bother with actually mentioning any of these things.

I really could handle all of this, the largest problem is how little dialogue choice there is in comparison to the previous game. The neutral option is totally removed and it's only paragon and renegade now for the dialogue.

I often review full games by only playing the demo too. I also like to cast aspersions on reviewers of games that I haven't played myself.

The backlash toward these reviews is going to make the GTA4 whiplash look like nothing. Wooh boy at that comparison to OoT and MGS.

That's pretty pathetic. How can people blindly hate the game like that?
I cannot believe that there are at least four massive, verbal diarrhea posts in there. They read like they've been written by some retarded zealot too.

Edit: seriously, that insane poster takes the argument to the level that ME3 is pretty much the antichrist.

The game being better on KB/M is not a truth, it is an opinion and one that I do not share. The combat in ME on normal is easy and you do not need precision at all. I just played through the game again and I did not use a medkit once, never used squad commands outside of the time when they force you to and I barely used powers as I played a soldier and didn't feel the need to change my ammo too often. Combat is not what makes the Mass Effect series good so an interface that maximizes effectiveness in combat is not the best control for the game.

Too bad Jeff felt a bit disappointed by it, though I did feel his review was pretty favorable overall (at least for the single player). Curious to hear what the rest of the Giant Bomb crew thinks about it. As for the rest of the reviews, damn, there's some high praise going around there.

Yeah, he absolutely loved ME2 just like me, so to see his reaction to it is a bit disheartening. So I guess this means ME2 = TESB and ME3 = ROTJ. :P

Whoa, calm down!

As I stated people, I will play the full game, but the demo was shit which means that my first impression wasn't positive. And if more people would question those unusual high reviews, we would live in a better world.
Maybe I'm all wrong and this is the best game of the generation; but same was promised with GTAIV's reviews.

Sometimes when people have no where to turn, things become ugly. All people ask is for concise, intelligent, knowledgeable breakdowns on a games mechanics how deep do they go, could they be the best they could be. Is the game designed proficiently, if not why. What detracts the gameplay, what detracts from the systems placed into the game.

When the madness drowns out the sanity, the sane become mad. Its asking who Polices the Police.

Its disheartening to think, or rather believe and informed individual would have your best interest and the critical interest of all at hand, only to see it devolve into mindless drum beating and the hype splash, it would drive anyone insane. Especially if they've been gaming for over 25 years.

Why would I question any review of a game I haven't played yet? Demo was great. Amazing that two people formed two completely different opinions after playing the same exact demo, eh?

Well, no. ME1 is the best of the series. A more fitting comparison is the Robocop trilogy, perhaps.

Nope, that's like... your opinion, man. I love both ME and ME2, but vastly prefer ME2. Better characters, better environments, better storylines and better gameplay. It may have less options for the MC but it's a case where to me the lesser option compares favorably.

I had to read this post twice and then you edited it.

I understand what you are saying, but... Mass Effect 3 is a game.

It is a consumer item, to be used and then discarded. Sure, some people will consume more of it, maybe try to seek out every nook and cranny.

But it is still just a game. A frivolous piece of light entertainment that has no value beyond its shallow dialog system and cover-based shooting. Making it into a demigod is the same as worshipping a toilet seat.

Yeah ME2 was better than ME1 but that isn't saying much. Both games are just "good" not great, not GOTY material, just passable experiences in every department save music, and of course sky-boxes and sci-fi city scapes in the distant background you have no hope of venturing to.

Tell the people who break the hype grid with these scores. Its them who vaunt a decent ride to become the Iliad.

Wow, what's up with IGN's review page? It's almost as horrid as The Verge's.

Like everybody guessed, this is turning to be a bad case of score inflation that'll settle down in a year...

Everybody says this when every big game review embargo comes around, it's up there with 'lol moneyhats' and 'only an 8, RAGE.'

Rent the game and judge it for yourself.
