Goddammit

Apparently the first guy was live streaming. Word is he did not survive :/

I hope it was quick because the third explosion came not soon after that and it was the largest. I hope he wasn't still there for that one.

the second explosion look more powerful.

That's actually the third. It's hard to tell in this video since the first and second explosions were only a second or so apart and all you see is the glow.

cant stop watching it, the power... unreal

so sad...

That quick switch from "man, this is awesome, like the 4th of July!" to "WE GOT TO GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" in less than a minute...

Fucking morons laughing at other people getting hurt until it got "real" for them too. Then they started running.

People think explosions are awesome. I don't think it crossed their mind that people were getting killed until the sky caught fire right in front of them. Call it Hollywood syndrome.

The woman asked "are we dangerous" before the biggie hit.

Been watching the videos since yesterday, that explosion is scary, RIP to all those who died, and a speedy recovery to all the injured..

The woman asked "are we dangerous" before the biggie hit.

Yeah, but that was after the second one hit. Both of them were more excited than scared before that when they thought it was just a gas station. I'm not judging them, excitement is a common and understandable reaction before you get the full scope of what's going on. Especially among us who've grown up in safe, modern societies. We're so used to never being in danger that we often don't act to protect ourselves in time. Lot's of people die that way during natural disasters and accidents. The people in the video could have been seriously hurt too by flying glass shards if they had been a bit closer or the explosion a bit more powerful and they never realized it.

My first thought was "this reminds me of the Terminator 2 opening". Not trying to belittle the tragedy of this with a movie comparison, just trying to equate it with something else that was scary to look at.

That's kinda the thing, we just don't have the references for mass casualty events outside of multimedia. That's the problem, because they're not the same - but the mind treats them like they are at first because it's all it knows.

I don't know. I hope they do and don't go down Texas' route of not giving a shit.

This is not the same. China is on a whole different level than the USA. The USA has the EPA, the CSB, the FDA, OSHA, etc. breathing down the necks of industry, and they are very strict.

China has safety regulations but they don't enforce it very well at all because enforcement falls on local government, and those local government officials are corrupted by money.
In Tianjin, you can hardly see buildings two street blocks down from you due to chemical plant pollution due to lax regulation enforcement and dirty coal production. That's astronomically worse than anything in Texas.

I see.

Do we know what did explode? Cause I've read petroleum, ethanol, explosives and other things. Explosives seems to be the most probable cause I think? Because... would petrol really explode with such magnitude?

I'm not sure, but at the large quantity they were storing, all those petroleum sources can definitely explode because they're hydrocarbon sources. Hydrocarbons have a lot of energy, and if things explode around them, it's possible that they can join in and explode too.

I think laughing can sometimes be a reaction to fear, or generally a situation you don't know how to handle.

Yep, usually it is "wow that fire is huge this is ridiculous" then the explosions and shockwaves hit and you realize how bad the situation really is.

Condolences to the victims of the blast.

Wow. that is crazy!!

In this one you can clearly see all three big explosions one after the other. I guess only thing to be thankful for was that there weren't any major businesses or residential buildings super close to it (ie. right across the street) and that it happened late at night and not during the day.

I guess it's good fortune that so much of the nearby area was dedicated to a new car lot so no people or buildings were in that part.

Those watching seem to be having a good sense of humor with it.

It's because you can understand English. They didn't realize how serious it was until that last big explosion then they weren't laughing anymore. Almost every video so far is the same reaction. In awe of it with gasps here and there then fear kicks in
