Massive Fire in High Rise Apartment in London

There is an audio clip of about 30 secs going around whatsapp groups. I've not seen any proof of this and the only info I have been able to get is that it's supposedly a recorded conversation between fire fighters. In it they say that the death count is closer to 150.

Do not assume this as true, but if it is, then this might be one of the worst disasters in recent British History.

King’s College Hospital is to lodge a complaint with the press watchdog over a journalist who allegedly impersonated a friend of a victim of the Grenfell Tower fire in order to get an interview with him.

It is understood that the Sun was trying to get an interview with Mario Gomes, a resident on the 21st floor who has been hailed as a hero after racing back into the building to find his 12-year-old daughter.

Sources say a Sun journalist has been accused of attempting to impersonate a friend of Gomes to hospital staff in order to interview him.

Yikes. It's an "older story" but the Guardian put it on its live blog ten minutes ago. Man, The Sun got no chill.

I think it would be outright the worst incident in London by fatalities since the end of the second world war.

Also the Sun continue to be the Scum it seems.

Let's not forget:

Tory manifesto said:
Given the comprehensive nature of the first stage of the Leveson inquiry and given the lengthy investigation by the police and Crown Prosecution Service into alleged wrongdoing we will not proceed with the second stage of the Leveson Inquiry.

I just saw this picture, is this true? Seems mostly Muslims and black people, fucking heartbreaking... And to think that the amount of victims will only rise :(

Corporate heads need to fucking roll for this (as a manner of speech of course).

I was watching QT this morning on Youtube and couldnt believe you had that young woman going on about regulations and how hard it is for businesses to thrive.

At the end of the day all most business owners care about is making money and anything that gets in their way is automatically bad even if it helps to save lives.

People need to go to jail for this.

While I agree, the question is who would be jailed and what for? If they've technically followed the regulations, where's the crime from a legal (rather than moral) standpoint?

IMO, ministers who have ignored this problem should be jailed as well as contractors cutting corners, but I can't see that happening in a million years. At best "lessons will be learned".

The ones who have known of these issues and instead did nothing about, or not enough. I find it highly doubtful that this disaster was completely unexpected by the authorities. There had to be a feeling of "hmm, this might not end well", as the tenants have complained about the lack of safety measures for years.

Something seems fishy about this fire besides the cladding to me The way this spread there has to have been an accelerant? Investigators should be able to tell soon enough. And the story about the refrigerator explosion to start the fire is a very rare occurrence. Tragic.

Its likely there were a lot of contributing factors

This is heartbreaking.
In this day and age we shouldn't be making this kind of mistake in the construction industry. People need to go to jail for this.

The cladding was the accelerant. Went within minutes up the building.

I guess all they can do after this is a controlled demilition of whats rest of the building? If it would collapse on its own wouldnt be very good.

The polyethylene core is flame resistant up to 165F which is basically nothing.
I don't understand how it spread from the shell to the core so quickly, weren't there adequate fire escapes?

165F? What the hell? A fire burns very very hot so yeah basically nothing.

Afaik a fire can burn at about a thousand degrees C. So...?!?

I don't even understand how it's an option for inhabited buildings.

THIS! All of the outrage over the cheaper option is a false direction because the cheaper options WAS OFFERED by the company as an available option. If it is that flammable, why is it on the market??

Not letting the council off the hook on this, but I more want to drag the manufacturer onto it.

I was at the Hans Zimmer concert in London yesterday and he said that he's giving all the proceeds from the show to the Grenfell Tower residents which is very fucking cool and awesome of him to do. What a heart breaking tragedy.

Watching the BBC News feed of the protest.

Lot of anger and I feel with them. Some of the families have not even been contacted by the council, two days into the desaster. Some instances of vandalism in the town hall, though most people seem peacefull...

Opting for the more flammable cladding to save a bit of money (a measly 5k in this case) is utterly disgraceful. How do people comfortably sign off a decision like that in full knowledge that are putting lives at risk? I heard the execs at the company responsible for the management of the tower are on six figure salaries.

The people on the upper floors didn't stand a chance. They were literally waiting to be consumed by the flames. I can't even imagine what must have been going through their minds.

I dunno all this information coming out makes me think that a London Riots 2 is on the horizon. I can't see the people affected simply "keeping calm and carrying on". Most of them already had very little and now they've lost family, their homes and everything in it.

Half the people who stormed that Town Hall looked like hangers-on who just want to be a part of something and film it on their iPhones. It's gonna fuck things up for the people who do need help from the council if they're not careful.

Comments say it was hand delivered.

If that's the case then is in bad taste. Problem is the world keeps on turning, sadly.

Protesters have given the council a list of demands.

They are:

Written commitment from the council on immediate rehousing of all the victims of Grenfell Tower fire within the borough
Immediate release of funds to cover costs of welfare and all losses suffered by the victims
Commission an investigation into the recent £10m refurbishment project of the same tower
Release full list of victims of the tragedy
Commission investigation into all other similar buildings in the borough to identify fire, health and safety risks and put in place immediate control measures.
Seems fair enough to me

not tag worthy
the longer the council ignores the people the more people are going to feel hurt, the likely the possibility it will turn nasty.

frustration will turn to anger

Did anyone just see the exchange between the protestor and the reporter on the BBC just now?

as I was writing the above I saw it
