extremely depressing list, but i guess this list would be almost the same on pc or xbox, cod cod cod , minecraft, cod.
Hollywood is the same. The top ones would be slop like Avatar and Marvel movies. While the good shit like There Will Be Blood and Goodfellas would be MIA.

Not shocking to me.

Sony's edge has always been about enabling 3P publishers to maximize their revenues on its platform. The exclusives are a way to push a specific segment of the market to choose them over others, but that segment is decreasing with time as more and more service titles become part of the gaming norm.

I was literally talking about this in another topic. People think their first party games are what makes people buy their hardware...it's not. It never was.
2 games in dollars and 4 games in units sold says it all.

edit: Also...Spider-Man, a non Sony IP being there also helps to show how they don't have many established IPs as huge as the other ones.

It's not the main reason, but having multiple, massively popular first party games is a key differentiator and an advantage in Sony's favour.

Dudebro shooter station. Even a COD game like WWII which didnt get the greatest reviews or sales since WWII themes got tired even ranks top 20 in units and dollars.

I thought Horizon sold a ton. It doesnt even show up in top 20 units. And San Andreas and Vice City sold that many copies? Wow.

What' also interesting to eyeball is seeing how the $$$ ranking of a game compares to its Units ranking (if it's there). If the $$$ is higher ranked it means the avg price will skew higher. If the $$$ are lower, it'll mean it skews to more bargain binning (or pack in games in a console bundle if a game's unit sales still count if sold that way)

Edit: The footnote says bundled games arent counted in charts. So it means these rankings are purely individual sales.

It's pretty funny Xbox has the dudebro image.

PS systems have always been heavy into shooters. It's just that they never got a COD, Halo or BF of their own to rake in massive sales. Just look at how many shooters they launched during PS3. So Sony tried. Problem is they spread themselves out too thin. If they just focused on 1 or 2 shooter IPs to get a following, they'd likely have their own shooter that could still have a modern day release. So Sony gave up on making them and did major COD partnerships deals starting in PS4 era.

Those same 3p games are available on every other platform as well. Sony is not 100% dependent on 1p exclusives but that doesn't mean they are not crucial to maintain a competitive edge. And ultimately what matters is having exclusive software that people want. The distinction between 1p and 3p is irrelevant to the consumer.

If Sony could snap their fingers and make every franchise on that list exclusive to PlayStation, you think they wouldn't do that?

As huge as what other ones?

GTA 5 rules. Also, you can see by the official chart (and my recap below) that COD games rank higher in $$$ than their Units. That means they will skew to higher prices. On the other hand, in the Units charts you get some games that zoom up the charts, or have a Units rank but not a top 20 $$$ rank. That means it'll be more of a bargain bin game.

Dollars
11 COD
3 GTA
3 Spiderman
1 RDR2
1 Guitar Hero
1 Minecraft

Units
9 COD
3 GTA
2 Spiderman
1 RDR2
1 Minecraft
1 LOU
1 GOW
1 Skyrim
1 RS Siege
