The Liberal Democrats really do not have much financial support. 10 seats and ~450 lost deposits might genuinely mean their collapse as a party; they won't be able to contest nation-wide next election. Won't have the money.

Would it really be that dire? I was absolutely expecting them to drop down to 10-15 or so seats but didn't consider the possibility that it would mean they'd be out of the running next time around.

I love how they do the counts, running about with the ballot boxes to try to get their declarations in early. I was thinking when I voted with the pencil "wonder if this will be on the internet next time around?" but you would miss all this fun if they did it that way.

Is that fair? Is this truly justice for the tuition fees betraylton?

I feel yes.

They don't have £250,000 spare to put candidates up for seats they can't defend deposits. It would genuinely be that dire. The BBC exit poll is effectively predicting the death of the Liberal Democrats as a viable nation-wide party.

The Lib Dems will survive, but their long term prospects will be damaged if their reduced to 10 seats and driven from large parts of the country altogether. It'll be a 10+ year rebuilding job.

Three safe Labour seats going to Labour, notbigsurprise.wav.

What's more surprising is three lost Lib Dem deposits and three Greens > Lib Dems. Oh, and two UKIP seconds.

Bloody hell, another UKIP second, and another Green beatdown on the Lib Dems, and another lost deposit.

All Sunderland so far I suppose.

Essentially, yes. They'll be forced to compete in a far smaller number of seats next time round. I think it'll be more than 10 years, though - it takes a long time to be able to make progress in areas you were already weak.

Nick Clegg you muppet, you killed your party. A party that generally veers left, does not form a coalition with a party on the right. That is not the reason people voted your party and now you're feeling the impacts of the loss of their trust.

I love that Dimbleby just ignores the person when there's a call, like your grandpa at Christmas just going off on one in the middle of your story
