When Nintendo released the DS Lite, everybody in Japan finally realised that Nintendo are out to screw them over with countless revisions, so potential DS owners ended up not buying a DS and quit gaming altogether thanks to Nintendo. Nintendo's strategy is market expansion, and it's not working. They're contracting the market.

Still, they've got loyal fans, and everybody knows that. All of the people who bought a DS Tank are being loyal to Nintendo and are now buying DS Lite's. They're selling out everytime. I predict that once DS Lite sales reach DS Tank sales, the DS Lite will continue to sell. Because they'll buy even more. The DS install base has stayed the same for months and months in Japan. And exactly the same thing has happened in Europe and North America. There is no proof that any DS Lite owner also doesn't own a DS Tank.

As for PSP, it has momentum, unlike DS, which is dead. PSP will continue its domination of Japan.

Although as good as Sony is doing, the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3 in Japan quite significantly. And obviously it's outselling that flop, the Wii, which has barely sold anything at all yet. Nintendo are a joke.

Yeah there's been so many lately.
There's something like fifty to a hundred newbies accepted daily as of late.
We hav over 13,000 members so far...
Why the sudden surge to be a gaffer?

BTW: cvxfreak, has famitsu updated its HW graph yet?

i just like the 'DS Tank' monkier... did you come up with that yourself?

Yeah, but it isn't that good. I suppose it's more inspired than DS Phat.

What was the week before's MC DSL numbers?

Nice graph Rock-Man.

The PSP in 2006 is currently only very slightly ahead of its 2005 pace, and looking at the rest of the year, it will be hard for the PSP (2006 total) to match the 2005 total. But it should be pretty close.

Just some quick and dirty math here. Those with totals help me clarify a few things.

Assuming NDS LTD WW is 23 million and given we have a 7 million (tracked) sales gap between the DS and PSP, that would put the PSP at 16 M sell through WW assuming WW sales (outside japan) are even between the DS and PSP.

Since we had that long drawn out debate several weeks back about PSP shipped v/ sold, it is safe to say PSP has sold 15-16 million units?

A few things need clarification. DS LTD WW (23 is probably too generous?) and DS/PSP WW gap US, Europe, Australasia, Canada, and the rest. If we bump WW LTD to 22 million units a 7 million tracked gap in Japan would put PSP at 15 mil tops WW.

DS:
Japan: 11 million
U.S.: 5.8 million
Europe: 6 million

= 22.8 million in the three major territories

PSP:
Japan: 4 million
U.S.: 5 million
Europe: 4.5-5 million

= 13.5-14 million in the three major territories

In other words, you're close, but the DS has a significant lead outside of Japan, as well.

Well, the point more or less is that sales outside of Japan just aren't even. DS is ~800k in the lead in the USA and ~1.5m (latest NoE and SCEE PRs: 6m / 4.5m) in Europe.

Edit: Crap, I'm late.

The usual

GBASP at 28 weeks: 1.53M
DSL at 28 weeks: 4.28M
Time for GBASP to reach 4.28M: 86 weeks

"GBA after SP" at 28 weeks: 416K
"DS after DSL" at 28 weeks: 480K
Time for "GBA after SP" to readh 480K: 37 weeks

DS at 28 weeks: 2.47M
PSP at 28 weeks: 1.44M
GBM at 28 weeks: 467K

Graphically

Other interestingness...
Comparing all of MS's years in Japan, it appears 2006 is now in the lead by a smidgen at week 37.

Looks like I'm late by a week or two, but Nintendo has passed their hardware units sold for all of 2005... which themselves were better than 2004 and 2003.

Similarly, and also due to the giant DS sales, total hardware unit sales for 2006 are beyond the final totals of 2003 and 2004, though 2005 is still ahead.

I think they just started lurking around the time the "defense forces" began to act up and believed they can actually bring their gamefaqs mentality to this forum.

The looming dark cloud of Pokemon is upon us. I fear the next thread will be full of "the Japanese line up for ANYTHING lolz"

So basically, DSL with shortages every single week is still a year and six months ahead of GBA SP.
Awesome. Revival of 2D gaming, go!

of course, but i also want "predict your first day Pokemon sales" topic :lol

Anyway... anyone noticed there were two 3rd parties game for DS in top10

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
so xbox360 finally fell under 1000. didn't they just drop the price too?

i guess its possible more of them are waiting for some of the bundles that were announced...nothin beats getting a free game i s'pose. especially since its the one game people are probably buying an xbox360 for in the first place.

Anybody got 360 LTD?

If Blue dragon sells huge 360 is comeback king. Also I think 360 is tracking at about the saem rate virtual boy did.

Also guy who gets the unconfirmed stuff usually. You usually have 360 weekly released game's software #s. Do you have #s for the weeks releases?

The data for the price drop should be seen next week or the week after.

1. PS3 and Wii are about to launch, therefore general interest is up
2. GAF keeps on getting mentioned on high-traffic sites (say, 1up.com).
3. Readers will tend to give out links to GAF threads to non-readers because this place is a very fast aggregator of news sources AND a dependable generator of hilarious visual commentary.

I think many non-members have known about GAF for a long while, just haven't been interested in joining. I've read through hundreds of threads on a monthly basis for a while now. But as I like discussion, I decided to join.

I make it sound like I'm talking about DS.

GAF's got the Blue Ocean stratagy down perfectly. Non-gafers explosion!

Innovator's Dilemma: Expand the number of gaffers and possibilities for discussion and variety, but also increase trolling. Or rely on the valued regulars while minimising annoyances.

Innovator's Solution: Ban, ban, ban!

Whens the last time the DS was under 100,000?

Maybe it was a few weeks ago, maybe months.

For DS (DSL+DS), the last time was on the week of Aug 14-20.

Since DSL launch, the only times the total is below 100K/week is only two times :
May 08-14 and Aug 14-20

Average of DS combined since DSL launch is : 169,870/week.

Scary, huh ?

When do you think DSL sales will drop to below 100K for the first time since this week ? 1 month after pokemon ? in year 2007 ?

I've been saying that shortages will probably last until next Spring, at this rate. We'll probably have < 100K weeks this year due to shortages, but we'll probably have to wait until Spring/Summer 2007 for the weekly average to drop below 100K with sufficient supply.

Of course, that will be met with multiple pages of threads proclaiming the DS's reign in Japan over. :lol

And by that time, the DS+DSL total will be close to 20 mill. I agree though; Nintendo will still be doomed.

Personally, I hope that there will be no shortage for Japan. At least, not ones that caused DS to drop below 100K.

Maybe I should ask for drop below 50K, since there is no way that DS will drop to <50K due to shortages. When DS drop to <50K, it will only because of lower demand.
