Openers from other big games and previous Pokemon games (Famitsu mostly):

Final Fantasy VIII 2,504,044
Dragon Quest VIII 2,167,072 (MC)
Final Fantasy VII 2,034,879
Final Fantasy IX 1,954,421
Dragon Quest VII 1,862,065
Final Fantasy XII 1,764,266 (MC)
Final Fantasy X 1,749,737
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl 1,588,734 (MC)
Final Fantasy X-2 1,472,914
Pokemon Gold/Silver 1,425,768
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire 1,245,003

Pokemon games typically have the lowest starting weeks of Japan's top 3 RPGs. The only FF premiere DP beat was FFX-2.

As of today, Pokemon has be awarded honorary 'nongame' status in Japan.

Isn't Final Fantasy considered a non-game now, too? The top selling series will all be non-games after DQM:Joker. :lol

Also Famitsu is saying that next week they will feature a "DS Scoop Rush" with some titles that have not been announced yet! :O
So they're finally gonna get around to announcing SSB DS and Chrono Trigger 2. About bloody time.

I can't wait to see how the Wii/PS3 effect the DS' current success in Japan. Is it possible that the DS might indeed outpace the consoles as Japan shifts more and more towards handheld gaming? EXciting times are ahead my friends.

Vol.1 did 90,946 in its first week and wasn't up against the poké-bomb. Bebpo cry?

No I'm just wondering how the **** more people bought vol.2 than vol.1 ^^; Math doesn't work like that!

And I'm glad they're making lots of money. Maybe they'll get the gameplay/pacing right on the next set ;P
PS. I like the game, but it's really terrible.

I wouldn't mind a greater focus on the handheld gaming industry, but I can name a few people who'd weep at that thought.

Oh man what I'd give for SSBDS with online play... if packed with as much or more content than SSBM, it would honestly be one of the greatest handheld games ever. And now that SE and Nintendo have such an awesome relationship these days, they could include some SE characters as well. :D

Indeed. :D I love PS3 and all... but handheld gaming ftmfw.

1.5 mill huh? That's pretty good.

Anybody wanna guess how many "copies" (including bundles) of WiiSports sell in the first week?

No WiiSports bundles in Japan. It'll probably do well. I'm guessing it's going to be a slow burner like the first BT game.

Thanks.

Look how much the industry has grown, from a time when the top ten bottomed out at 11,619 to now when all the top 10 games sell over 20,000.

No! Nongames are RUINING the industry! RUINING, I SAY!

RRRUUUUIIIIINNNN!!!

*runs away screaming*

not too bad for FFIII. It will be interesting to see how pokemon effects it over the next few weeks.

Will the added DS owners keep it chugging along in the 40-50k area, or will it continue to slowly decline?

1 million seems inevitable at this point, with the real question becoming, how long can it stay in the top 10?

It's a FF title that appears to have legs. It's lasted this long so who the hell knows how much it will sell in the long run. It is a DS title in Japan after all. It's come to the point where predicting how a DS title will do in Japan is like trying to predict the weather a year from now.

Any predictions on Famitsu's DS scoops?

-Brain Training 3? Nintendo doesn' need to release another one anytime soon. Save it for 2007
-Nintendogs-esque title

Considering famitsu is a gaming magazine, wouldn't their scoop be aimed more towards gamers?

And where's the 'it prints money' gif?

It'd ****ing well better be Fire Emblem.

And seven more Square Enix games.

I'm guessing...
- Metroid Dread!! (lol believe)
- Mario Party DS/Mario sport/non-platforming game
- Maybe another SE title.
- Hopefully something from Sega & Capcom
- Golden Sun 3 (plz)

I wish. But alas, I highly doubt Nintendo would have Wii and DS versions of Fire Emblem in development at the same time. The series isn't that big, sadly. I'd love to see something new from Intelligent Designs though.

- Fire Emblem
- 2 or 3 new Squeenix games (Slime Mori-Mori 3, plzkthxbye)
- some wacky RPG we don't know about from some cult developer
- Nintencats
- another training game from Nintendo that'll sell 1.5 million
- Baten Kaitos DS (dammit!)
- maybe an anime fighting game
- Fighting Vipers DS; make it happen Sega.

I want more games from Capcom. Alot more. And something that isn't Megaman or a Japanese trainer. >_< (Monster Hunter maybe?)

And something from Namco... A 3D FIGHTER, PLEASE!! Soul Calibur online DS! Also... New Tales with Abyss battle system and 10000x better character designs than Tempest. But Namco and Capcom hate the DS for some inexplicable reason. :(

And I shall once again advertise the idea of Square-Enix-Nintendo Hearts.

Heh. They had GBA and GCN Fire Emblems in development at the same time, so that sorta blows your theory, I'm afraid. The Fire Emblem team is pretty big right now -- big enough to work on two games at the same time, particularly when one of them (Goddess of Dawn) is being built off a preexisting game engine and scenario.

Some nice ideas there.

Normally one would find it an implausible suggestion to think Square Enix would have yet more to announce given that they've announced five games in the past month -- but I honestly wouldn't be even the tiniest bit shocked to see yet more announced before the year is out.

Wacky cult RPG = awesome stuff.

Nintendo should really just publish BK DS themselves.

You get started off so well there, and then it all goes so terribly, terribly, horrifically wrong, ending in an apocalyptic trainwreck that will make little girls cry and wet themselves when they see how frighteningly gory it is.

I see what you did there.

Found it.

And let's keep the SE-Nintendo crossover for the Wii or something, where it'd be the killer app the system needs.

y? DS has no fighters aside from anime fighters and the lame Guilty Gear, which isn't even Guilty Gear. Namco should step up and fill that void. And I also wouldn't mind a new Tales for the DS. I don't see what's wrong with that.

And plus Square-Enix-Nintendo Hearts would be the best game ever.

But did the games come out in the same year? I just don't see Fire Emblem getting extended like that here.

Nintencats has already been shot down. Didn't Nintendo say that cats wouldn't work since they aren't as active as dogs (IE tricks and shit)?

I want it too, and I'd definitely enjoy it more than Nintendogs. But I think Nintendo will try and milk another 2 million sales out of Nintendogs before they consider doing Nintencats.

Cats are active dammit! Just place them in an area with lots of birds, they're totally active.

Somehow, watching a cat lie around just isn't all that appealing. Granted, Nintendogs wasn't appealing to quite a few and it sold boatloads, so who am I to say?

But Nintendogs offered lots of...features. What features could Nintencats have outside of petting the cat? Cats are too bitchy to catch frisbees

My understanding is that there are many different ways to skin cats, and I'm certain that the DS's innovative touch screen would allow for the immersiveness needed to fully experience every single one.
