If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I could see Love + selling +500K when its all said and done.

Absolutely deserves it.

BTW, I encourage someone to make a new thread. I can't myself right now (making this post from my phone)

The only problem was I changed the chart, then went to famitsu.com, saw the real number and changed it again:lol
Well at least nobody quoted it. :p

Speaking of quoting, that chart should be on this page:

Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver starts similar to the original Gold / Silver, which launched Sunday, and destroys the only other Pokemon remake (Fire Red / Leaf Green), which launched Thursday. I'll wait next weeks numbers first, but with the strong legs HG/SS will have until Christmas and the strong start it had, first position doesn't seem so sure to me for DQIX this year.

i don't think it's correct to talk about bomba for a kind of games as RGG3 or Tales of VS.

Both games were released some time ago, and also how someone could say they bombed when RGG is about half a million copies sold and Tales of VS. overpassed 200k a couple of weeks ago ?

a typical bomba is Blood of Bahamut, 30k sold on first week, price dropped about 50% the following week.

i found some Animal Crossing copies in Bic Camera the last month, priced 1380yen. can we say AC was a bomba after it sold over 1mln ???

RGG3 bomba? It hung tight at full price for 6 months, almost unheard of in the Japanese market.
Cripes, you guys, it's just my pet name for the clearance table at Sofmap. Don't get your lacy undergarments in a twist.

The table's just there to clear excess stock. Sometimes that's from a mega-bomba (Culdcept DS), sometimes it's from a game that has a sequel or Best Hits release coming (RGG3), and sometimes it's just from successful games that were absurdly overshipped, like Animal Crossing, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, or Devil May Cry 4.

Also, it's just one store. But hey, if y'all are going to get butthurt when I report the info, I just won't pass it along anymore. No sweat off my sack.

Good Pokemon sales, but that was pretty much a given.

Interesting to see PS3 slim also sold out in those pics. I guess the second week sales are going to be hurt by Pokemon, but I still think it could pull 40-50k

Nah, please carry on passing it on. It's interesting to note the games that turn up there, and I would think that most posters here are sensible enough to separate true bombas from overships etc., especially when sales figures (and occasionally shipment figures) from launch to date are available for pretty much all of the titles you'll be mentioning.

Wait, what? How in the world is Culdcept DS a mega bomb? It was the third port of the first game, and what does that make both versions of Culdcept Second and Culdcept Saga?

for what it's worth, i did a couple of "bomba bin" posts last november. i thought that was the accepted term for the sofmap DEEP DISCOUNT bin.

AC's initial shipment was less then 1M (about 800k IIRC) and it's already sold past 1M so I don't see how they over shipped. Unless they end up shipping like 1.5M which makes no sense, because they wouldn't ship anymore if the first shipment wasn't even sold out for awhile. I thought games hitting the discount bins was normal in Japan, especially after so many months.

Should have known it was just a pet name. I do like the ring of it anyway. :D

Can someone please explain to me why these dual Pokemon games always add up their sales and chart as one entity? And then whenever end of year results are published we get the individual sales?

Animal Crossing: Wild World is still full-price here.

For a lot of games, hitting the discount bins is normal. For the big franchise Nintendo games, it's exceptionally rare.

Famitsu combines both SKUs and Media Create (annual Top 500 charts) lists them separately. It's just two different trackers.

So is this the last megahuge DS game, then?
My theory (in french) is that Nintendo will release "Pokémon 5" in September 2010.

Pokémon R/G/B -> G/S = 3 years & 9 months.
Pokémon G/S -> R/S = 3 years.
Pokémon R/S -> D/P = 3 years & 10 months.
Pokémon D/P -> Septembre 2010 = 4 years.

There will be no new handheld before 2/3 years. And now Nintendo has exhausted all the 4th generation, they can't wait the next handheld for launch the next generation. I think.

I think you have a point there, I just think that the 5th Pokemon games could be DSi exclusive, or maybe with some features just accessible if played on a DSi.

I think Pokemon can benefit from a new game engine rather than a new platform at this point. I wouldn't be surprised to see Generation V two to three years from now on the DS rather than a new platform, if they decided to go through with it at all this generation.

BishopLamont said:
I beg to differ. It's still selling insanely well worldwide and there's no chance in hell they're releasing it Japan only. It's a defacto system seller, releasing two on the same platform doesn't make much sense. It's also why we're seeing it on the Wii. It's a much smarter move for Nintendo to save it for next-gen.

Look at it this way: if NSMB sells another 250k a month around the world, and we assume that it dies off completely if a sequel comes out, is it better to sell 250k copies a month, or to release a sequel that sells 5+m copies worldwide in its first six months and then also goes on to sell 250k per month afterwards?

I think Pokemon could benefit from actual knowledge of improvements in game and interface design from the last, say, 12 years of gaming. :-/

If we're definining huge as 2-3 million + in sales (as in, well above the threshold that DQ6 will hit), then yeah, probably.

ksamedi said:
I really don't think so. Would be weird if they didn't release NSMB2 (and NSMB3).

The problem with that is that NSMB2 was just announced for the Wii. Prior to that, I would've seen a NSMB2 on the DS as a given. Now, not so much.

December 2010? No. "Never" might be a more plausible answer. The PSX and PS2 had 52 million sellers between them. While I never discount the ability of the DS to propel a surprisingly unexpected game to platinum status, I'm not sure at this point that it has that many million sellers left in its lifetime. Certainly not in terms of currently announced games, and I'm skeptical as to how many big games Nintendo will be putting on it in the future.

The second if those are the only options and the results are assured.

Sure. And my point isn't that NSMB2 (or I guess it would be NSMB3 now) for DS is so obviously a good deal that they must do it, just that it is not actually particularly difficult to invent plausible scenarios in which it is in fact a good idea.

How close did that Wagamama DS game get to a million before falling off the charts?
(Famitsu)
Early April was its last Top 30 appearance with a total of 806K. The most recent number I've got for it is from the mid-year Top 100 in late June with a total of 841K.

52 ?! Seems that i overlooked that japangamecharts only collected data since 1996. My bad.

Not sure where the major discrepancy comes from, but I doubt the date thing makes much difference. Considering PS1 was a pretty slow burner until FF VII blew it up in early 1997, I doubt the year-ish before 1996 was shooting many million-sellers out.

I don't have comprehensive databases of myself, but maybe if you count original + budget priced releases you can squeeze the additional 17 entries to the 35 you can easily spot there.

Without including budget re-releases there are 18 million sellers for PS and 17 for PS2

Pretty sure both of those amounts are way too low. Can't give you all the exact games since I'm on my phone now, but all the resources I've ever referenced, including YSO and a few other Japanese sales sites, have put the numbers much higher (in the 50s range, as I said). And I'm not sure why Best versions of games wouldn't be counted as part of the game's total sales; they may have been tracked separately, but for any discussions on this forum involving a game's selling power, they've always historically been included.

Also, Smoker, while your database is great -- I've pored over it a few times and saw a number of discrepancies between that and YSO and the top 100/500 Famitsu charts. So maybe that explains the issue?

Are you sure you are not wrong? I have almost every famitsu data there is and even the geocities site that I just checked gives these numbers.

Hmm, would be helpful if you could post those discrepancies (or some examples), I'll try to find the reason. :)

Yes, I'm quite sure that I'm not wrong in that the sites I have used as a reference over the past three years list the numbers I just said they listed.

Captain Smoker, maybe if you include things like Metal Gear Solid 2 + Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Kingdom Hearts + Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.

Would that be considered the same game or just "cheating"? Haha

I already did and you even replied to it.

Its 32 PSX million sellers, and in many cases its because you don't have totally complete data, others because the publisher themselves said it had done it (MH3 is counted already in YSO) and one or two weird ones where Famitsu numbers don't tell the same picture.

I'll reply to myself. Gathered as much as I could from gamefaqs to note where could the difference between the 10 extra titles YSO has as million sellers come from. Mostly lacking budget re-releases or just small differences from what a publisher shipped and what Famitsu claimed to have been sold. But there are one or two weird cases, anyway here we go (bold is yso, then famitsu data from this thread, then my take on the reason):

PS Arc the Lad 2 SCE 96.11.01 1,060,000
PSX - Arc the Lad II 816.873
Reason: Over 200k off, two budget re-releases data not found:
Arc the Lad II (PlayStation the Best) SCEI SCPS-91071 07/09/98
Arc the Lad II (PSOne BOOKS) SCEI SCPS-91310 11/22/01

PS Densha de GO! Taito 97.12.18 1,020,000
PSX - Densha de Go! 949.947
Reason: Just 70k off and there's two SKUs not counted that would explain it:
Densha de Go! (PlayStation the Best) Taito Corporation SLPM-86263 08/05/99
Simple 1500 Series Vol. 103: The Ganso Densha Utenshi - Densha de Go! D3 SLPM-87212 01/30/03

PS I.Q.: Intelligent Qube SCE 97.01.31 1,010,000
PSX - I.Q.: Intelligent Qube 750.740
PSX - I.Q. Intelligent Qube (Playstation the Best) 83.937
Reason: All SKUs counted but still miles off.

PS Crash Bandicoot 3 SCE 98.12.17 1,500,000
PSX - Crash Bandicoot 3 917.105
Reason: Huge discrepancy but two budget releases not counted could explain it:
Crash Bandicoot 3 (PlayStation the Best for Family) SCEI SCPS-91164 10/14/99
Crash Bandicoot 3 (PSOne Books) SCEI SCPS-91318 12/06/01

PS XI [sai] SCE 98.06.18 1,120,000
PSX - XI [sai] Jumbo 864.844
PSX - XI [sai] Jumbo (Devil Dice Jumbo) 64.207
Reason: Aha, weird case. There seems to be two different games here, XI [sai] and Xi [sai] Jumbo.
Jumbo data seems fair but then where's Xi [sai] data? (YSO has Xi [sai] as million seller, not Jumbo).
XI [sai] Jumbo SCEI SCPS-10123 12/22/99
XI [sai] Jumbo (PlayStation the Best) SCEI SCPS-91231 05/17/01
XI [sai] SCEI SCPS-10051 06/18/98
XI [sai] (PlayStation the Best) SCEI SCPS-91166 10/14/99
XI [sai] (PSone Books) SCEI SCPS-91303 10/12/01

PS Beat Mania Konami 98.10.01 1,070,000
PSX - Beatmania 923.585
PSX - BeatMania Best Hits 69.315
Reason: Not a very big difference, shipped vs sold or just not totally complete data

PS Parasite Eve Square 98.03.29 1,060,000
PSX - Parasite Eve 994.420
Reason: No budget version going by gamefaqs so most likely shipped vs sold or not totally complete data

PS Simple 1500 Series Vol. 1 The Mahjong D3 98.10.22 1,000,000
PSX - Simple 1500 Series Vol. 1 The Mahjong 787.685
Reason: Weird, gamefaqs says there were kinda like two SKUs so one could have been counted separate
Simple 1500 Series Vol. 1: The Mahjong Chat Noir SLPS-02437 10/22/98
Simple 1500 Series Vol. 1: The Mahjong D3 SLPS-02437 11/01/99

PS Derby Stallion 99 ASCII Entertainment 99.09.30 1,100,000
PSX - Derby Stallion '99 871.057
Reason: ?? no more SKUs to note, unknown reason for such huge difference

PS Doko Demo Issyo SCE 99.07.22 1,010,000
PSX - Doko Demo Issyo 808.057
Reason: Lacking 2 SKU data could easily explain it:
Doko Demo Issyo (with PocketStation) SCEI SCPS-10125 12/02/99
Doko Demo Issyo (PlayStation the Best) SCEI SCPS-91212 12/07/00

Edit:
Ah, you're using YSO's list. They state that they're using published reports from software companies for some of their "million-seller" titles. Just browsing a more detailed listing, it appears that in addition to possibly combining BEST re-releases, the companies also may be combining expansions with the original game. (e.g. Shin Sangoku Musou 4 - 918K, SSM4:Empires - 145K, SSM4:Moushouden - 355K; Shin Sangoku Musou 4 is listed at 1.0 million, so Koei probably put out a press release saying 1 million, and never put out an update)

YSO only lists a single million-seller on PS1 before 1996, so I think it's reasonable to say that the PS1/PS2 million-sellers would probably be 35+1 using Famitsu data.

@Kurosaki Ichigo
The ones you list > 100K with SKUs from 1999 and later are not easily explainable with saying it's due to missing Famitsu data. We have the Top 300/500 after 1999, so it's not going to mesh with missing ~100K in data on individual games. I think we're just going to have to accept that Famitsu is not going to always reconcile with what publishers put out, which is what YSO is using.
