The drop is no surprise. How anyone expected anything higher is beyond me. I don't think it could have sold any higher. Even if there was another shipment. Still good second week consider this is a console and not the DS.

Again, these are consoles though so legs like a DS is highly unlikely. I would hope the low end of 10k a week is behind us though......I hope.

Yes that would be a lot better average for the next year, and it should be interesting if they maintain 30k for the next year.

30k average for a year? How apetites change... we discussed in last thread how settling at >20k would be great for sony :D

It is even higher than what I was expecting.

To me, the most surprising is the Wii. 14k already? Man, that was a fast drop.

And the DS still living on its own reality.

Considering the Wii is already approaching the low end of 10k a week about a month after new color and MH3. I would not be surprised at all to see the PS3 joining it. Heck I'd be shocked if it didn't.

PSP is also droping like crazy. I think its starting to reach the saturation point of a 2nd place system at its price point. How much is the PSP right now in Japan? Anyone know how far away it is from the GBA?

It's still over a month away here, and I'm not sure the "give-a-fuck" quotient could be lower.

PSP needs to start rocking some decent and frequent releases again if it's going to pick up. Or another Monster Hunter.

BattleMonkey said:

Uh, unlikely, I think. TBH, PSP Go seems to be the redesign no-one wanted (unlike the Slim) and I don't get the impression there's a great deal of enthusiasm for it anywhere.

Well, realistically speaking, if you were Sony what would you expect as a base-line measure of success? 30-50% pa would seem reasonable to me?

Going to 30k average over a year is only ~1.5m units, so its at the high-end of expectations but not so far as to be improbable.

Maybe I'm over optimistic but I'd be unsurprised if they hit closer to 2m over the next 12 months especially with FFXIII and GT5, but its all going to boil down to economic conditions.

Much larger drop than even I expected. Was thinking more like ~50%.
It is relatively close to 50% though (the PS3 drop is 62% as gofreak mentioned earlier) :) If the drop was exactly 50%, then the PS3 would have sold 18,444 more consoles this week (going by the Famitsu numbers). 18,444 consoles is surely a fair amount of consoles though, but i dont think that it is that far away if you guessed a drop around 50%, at least in my opinion :) Or what do you think? :)

But to be honest, i did think that the PS3 hardware sales this week might have been a bit higher, maybe around 70k or so.

Loudninja said:
Umm how could it have done better if the first shipmemt was 200k?
Sony could have quickly restocked, at least in theory, but i dont know if they had enough PS3 consoles produced to be able to do a quick restock though.

Seeing used PS3 Slim for sales doesnt necessarily tells how the supply situation is in general though. Or, it might depend on how many used PS3 Slim there are for sale :) Are there a lot or rather few used PS3 Slims for sales in Japan now, does anyone know? Segata Sanshiro said that the PS3 was sold out in some stores last week, but that it probably wasnt hard to get a PS3 Slim if you went to another store, but now it probably shouldnt be any supply problems regarding the PS3 Slim in Japan at least :)

botticus said:
The problem is it will likely be significantly lower than 57k next week.
I wonder if Tales of Vesperia for the PS3 will affect the PS3 hardware sales. Tales of Vesperia came out for the Xbox 360 about a year ago though, so who knows how much Tales of Vesperia for the PS3 will affect the PS3 hardware.

EDIT: I added some text (i am sorry for the late edit :\).

Tbqh nintendo should probaly just stop selling the Wii because the "public" is awakened to the fact that it was always the garbag console. For i.e., I'm picturing a women and she's been playin like Carnivel Games or Wii fit ness and she just starts to slowly shake her head when she realizes how ugly the sd Games are and she's like VADERNO.JPG all over her pilates matt!

Frankly with the ps3 at a very cheap $299, I don't understand why any1 would be buying Nintendon'ts quote Console unquote! You can just rent one when Super Mario Galaxy 2 comes out and since Marvalous is gonna port No More Heros and Muramasa, what else does Wii got? Mario Cricket? :lol :lol

If i know Stumpokapow good enough, i would say that this is a sarcasm/joke post :) I cant remember seeing him trolling seriously at least.

But to be a bit fair about what Interfecum said about that the Wii would go downhill after a hardware bump due to a price drop, i wonder how much the Wii's pricetag is affecting the sales. I think that the PS3 hardware sales were more affected by the PS3's pricetag compared to how the price situation is with the Wii.

If Nintendo drops the price on the Wii, i dont think that it will be more than about 5000 yen (about 50 US dollars), i dont think that we will see an about 10,000 (about 100 US dollars) yen pricedrop on the Wii like we saw with the PS3 at least. 5000 yen is definitly a fair amout of money, and i am sure that the Wii hardware sales will increase with a 5000 yen pricedrop, but will a 5000 yen price drop boost the Wii hardware sales alone for many months to come?

I guess it also depends on which game that comes out though, just like it is with other gaming consoles as well. A pricedrop alone might not affect the hardware sales for a long time if there isnt any popular games that are coming out (or that there are popular games that have already been released for the gaming console that gets a pricedrop).

Now that the PS3 hardware and the Wii hardware is relatively close in price, i think that it shall be interesting to see how both consoles sells. As i mentioned above here, which games that excists and which games that are coming out might affect the hardware sales than just the consoles' price tag though, but i think that it shall be interesting to see how the PS3 and the Wii, and the Xbox 360 as well, will keep on selling now that all 3 consoles have a relatively similar price tag, at least in Japan :)

Look at it this way; a weekly average of 57k is close to 3million units over a year. Which is significantly more than anyone is predicting.

What is wrong about that argument? He just pointed out that if the PS3 sold 57k each week in average, that is over 3 million consoles sold in one year. On the next line he said that more relasticly anything above 30k each week would be fantastic for Sony. I dont think that he was expecting the PS3 to sell 57k in average for about 1 year from now on :)

EDIT: But in theory, if the PS3 manages to sell 57k each week in average in Japan for about 1 year, that is pretty pretty good in my opinion, concidering that the PS3 has sold about 3.5 million consoles (including this week's hardware sales) in about 2.5 years. So if the PS3 can sell about 3 million consoles in Japan in about 1 year, than this is a pretty good increase compared to how the PS3 has sold so far, at least in my opinion :)

But i dont think that it is realistic that the PS3 will sell about 57k consoles each week in average in Japan for about 1 year. I agree with what Clear said earlier, that anything above 30k PS3 consoles sold each week in Japan would be good for Sony :)

I'm personally betting on the PS3 Slim averaging about 20% more per week than the original model. But with Wii sales so low at this point, the two are probably going to be closer than ever for awhile.

If this week was fun wait until next. DS and Pokemon will overshadow everything else and in the case PS3 slim sales have a big drop more meltdowns are expected
And can we stop with this supposed supply issue about PS3?

Media Create reported 151.783 sales last week with a 60% sellthrough. Total estimated shipment ~250.000.
Dengeki reported 147.928 sales last week with a 55% sellthrough. Total shipment ~270.000.

What many J-gaffers say that there are already some used PS3 slims, so it's definetely not a supply problem. This reminds me the "big shortage" PS3 fat had a couple of weeks before the slim release when there are stacks of them unsold at the Japanese retailers.

Personally I was expecting more from DS. Maybe the relatively low hardware number for such a big software title has something to do with the Pokemon shortage. If Pokemon Platinum is an indication DS hardware will rise next week.

Some JPGaffers were saying they're already seeing used PS3 slims for sales in stores.

You can find anything used in a Japanese game shop like a day after release. I saw a few black Wiis in shops used like a few days after it went on sale.

According to famitsu:

DS last week: 68.304
DS this week: 75.622

Sales rised 11,07%. I was definetely expecting something better than this. I'll wait for the Media Create numbers, so that I have a better image.

Even with 1.5 million units sold in a week, it just surprises me that there's a Pokebump for the hardware at all after the millions of units of Pokemon software already sold.

Just based on the software for the rest of the year 10k would be impossible unless there is a shortage based on major incompetence (doubtful) or Japanese people truly do hate console games.

I never said it would, but has a high chance of stopping it becoming "significantly lower" than 57k, which is what I did say.

I think what Meier is going for is that that's a pointless statement since the PS3 will almost certainly not keep selling 57k per week indefinitely. If you're gonna make statements without any reasonably probable basis, you might as well say "If the PS3 sold 250k per week for the next three years, it would be the most successful system in history!"

It's true, but so what? It's not gonna happen.
