Saying that gaming in Japan is dead isn't a judgemental statement indicating that it changed for the worse?
Now that I think about it, it might be read that way.... What I meant was that gaming as we knew it died over there, and something new came into it's place.

It's not up for debate, first of all. Second, intent means nothing. If some person unfamiliar with American culture came in here and dropped the N-bomb on us, I would politely do the same.

Let's not take this discussion further and detract from an otherwise FASCINATING thread about why some people are still using the PS2 as a measuring stick for today's market.

VF5 was never really a system seller, TEKKEN might be, but it's sales also went down. Fighting games lost popularity. I also doubt that PS3 will EVER be able to outsell Wii in Japan.
Gaming in Japan changed, or as I'd like to call it: IT DIED. Europe will follow Japan's trends, Wii will be giant in Europe, PS3 and X360 - not so much. The last bastion is NA, I think that in NA people still want awesome graphics and hi end technology.

Let's see what will happen.
gaming is dead because a sony console is not selling well? did you start playing games with the PS1 or something?

Yeah, what's with all this new-fangled Mario and Dragon Quest jargon? Not to mention that no name Grand Theft Auto game at the top of the list.

Xbox 360? PSP? Twilight Princess? Come on. X360 has enough awesome games to sell like hot cakes everywhere, yet on top of the charts we see games like Brain training and Wii sports.

Get used to being marginalized. Just like with women, with school, with work, now with videogames. Just another area where you aren't being courted.

Compared to Europe and NA sales of GTA, Japanese sales are nothing, and Dragon Quest Monsters isn't as big or deep as DQVIII. But hey, that's my opinion, I don't want to argue over it, I'm off.

220,000+ first week sales of GTA:SA is hardly "nothing". Will it have the legs necessary to drive it to the heights the GTA series has hit in the West? Unlikely, IMO, but I expect it to do a fair amount more before it drops off the charts, and for a game like GTA in a territory like Japan that's pretty impressive.

Oh, and bye :D

Great post. That's pretty much what all the complaining comes down to. That no longer is every game released targeted at you, in fact, it may not target you at all.

It is #1 . . . and sales just started. And keep in mind that this is a Z-rated game wherein you have to go to a porn store to get it. (OK, that part is an exaggeration . . . but could some Japan based person such as DCharlie tells us how retailers sell z-rated games? Are they behind the counter? Is advertising allowed? etc.)

Sorry, I would like to reply to this but I don't fully understand what you are saying here. Especially not what you mean by "upping the ante and trying to snipe back". Just to clear one thing up, I don't expect the PS3 to 'turn it around' marketshare wise, but they will[\i] make some money with their console in a couple of years. I can not quite follow the reasoning behind your assertions.

The only situation in which it's worth it for Microsoft to start the next generation early is if they're being blown out by Sony. If it's a close battle (in terms of marketshare and software sales), Microsoft will have an advantage in terms of better profitability on hardware and therefore will not be in any rush to move on. If Microsoft is winning handily it's obviously in their favor to keep the current generation going as long as possible.

Ahhh...Japanese sales...time for my weekly two cents.

Ok well this is getting interesting now. I expected all consoles to go down slightly in sales this week, and the PS2 and 360 proved me wrong, ever so slightly though. I don't know if I should be surprised that the 360 was the only next-gen console that went up a little bit, or if I should be surprised that GOW only spiked it by 300 units. Either way next week will tell us a little bit more about where the 360 will finally stabilize. I expect all consoles to drop again next week slightly.

Does anyone know VF4's release date and if GOW is now in stock for the 360 in Japan? Was it in stock for this week's sales?

"Market research firm Research and Markets even went so far as to predict an install base of 75 million worldwide for the Playstation 3 by 2010,"

How many consoles a month, as of right now, does Sony have to sell to hit that outrageous prediction?

It depends on whether they mean the "by the first of 2010" or "by the end of 2010". The wording is ambiguous. Either way, they'd need to start selling about 1.5-2 Million units a month to get there.

Yeah it was but I remember seeing something about shortages. I'm thinking about the possibility of a delayed effect. That's why I was curious whether it was back in stock and just tanked this week, or if it was still unavailable.

How does the Wii compare with the DS performance 2 years ago??
First 26 weeks cumulatively and weekly.

They followed a very similar pattern initially, though Wii supply wasn't as large as DS supply. Wii hasn't dropped off as much as DS did between New Year's and Easter, though.

Would you suggest that the PS2 is no longer important to the market, or are you just saying that its success shouldn't be considered as a benchmark? I'm pretty sure you mean the latter, but I just want to make sure.

Didn't expect to see GTA topping the charts.. didn't even knew that it was going to be released last week. Nice performance overall for software, DS and Wii continue their steamroll. Maybe those people bought their ps3 so that they won't have to buy replacement ps2's anymore, right? ;) Seriously though, the ps3 better start cracking out games because those initial hardcore fanbase who buy such an expensive system just for future potential won't last forever. And somehow I doubt VF5 alone will turn it around..

The latter.

I'm saying that the PS2's success cannot be looked at as a model for success this generation, other than swift and severe success in its first two years. Everything else, including competition, DVD (or BR in this case) inclusion, etc, is corollary to the discussion.

The #1 concern at this point MUST be price, and I think that's obvious. Sony priced themselves out of competition. At first we thought their "brand name" would carry them, that 100 million+ customers would carry them, that MGS4, FFXIII, and now VF5 (on both consoles?) will carry them.

They crossed the threshold of what people are willing to pay for home entertainment and they will end up being the ones that pay. Their best bet would be to drop to $349 tomorrow and hope that they can pump out some non-FPSs for this JPN market.

That would be an excellent idea (and maybe a description for those typical 'weird' Japanese games that are a mysterie to me when I only see the name of the game).

I'm sure the only reason that they bought the game is so that they can kill every ****ing American they can see, and get away with it because the Japanese obviously have an intense hate for everything American ;) j/k

It's because of nationalism. By buying GTA:SA, the Japanese are supporting the PS2 /speculawyer

Lapsed, concerning your 'Nintendo aims to sell to everyone' argument, doesn't seem a bit suspect when Nintendo itself appears completely unprepared for the massive DS success in the first place? They can't produce enough DSLs, they can't keep up on cart production, causing games to have wonky print runs, they even had a plastic game case shortage at one point.

I mean, what they say doesn't seem to match up with what they planned for.

Would you rather have retailers demanding more of your product or saying they have too much? It's an interesting contrast to Sony and Microsoft's approach of stuffing the inventory full of product. This allows Nintendo much more leverage over retailers. But it is also more profitable.

It should be clear to anyone that Nintendo's priority is a strong balance sheet. If it comes down to a choice of losing marketshare or some demand and having a healthier balance sheet, they'll choose balance sheet every single time. A great example is Sony shipping PS3s over planes and Nintendo shipping Wiis over boats. Both products are in high demand (for PS3, a month ago let's say). But using boat costs far less than plane. And, even though Wiis are sold out, Nintendo feels no need to spend that money to get Wiis in a little earlier.

When the Wii launched, Shop Channel and VC were ready because that made Nintendo money while Weather Channel, News Channel, and Opera browser did not. (You can see where the priority is.) Nintendo can delay online at launch (except to Shop Channel naturally) because it makes them no money (though they have to deliver eventually or the console's reputation suffers).

When one of Nintendo's console engineers was interviewed, he explained why Nintendo took such care to make sure their hardware and controllers were reliable and wouldn't fail. Nintendo wants you spending your entertainment dollars on more software (which is very profitable) instead of replacing your hardware (which is not that profitable).

In the Wii interviews, a female artist working on Twilight Princess explained how she spent lots of time on a particular shop. Iwata got on to her about how expensive that was. When IGN interviewed Miyamoto about a new Kid Icarus, Miyamoto's first question was, "Would you buy it?" The question to Nintendo isn't whether a new Kid Icarus should be made, but whether a new Kid Icarus would sell.

The 'it prints money.gif' is perfect because that is what Nintendo gets excited about. A 'it increases marketshare.gif' or 'it is getting non-gamers.gif' wouldn't be as funny because, while true, that's not what Nintendo's ultimate goal is. They want more profits, and they chose their business strategy not because it is 'winning', but because it is the most 'profitable'.

Increasing production is not pressing a button of 'high speed'. It costs money and time to ramp up production. It costs money to keep a large inventory. Nintendo has increased production (such as the DS), but they appear to increase it incrementally. Nintendo will never flood the market with hardware except right before a holiday season (or Pokemon release). And, after coming from the Gamecube, it is going to be a while to ramp up production of Wiis.

Nintendo isn't interested in making video games. They are interested in making money printing presses. Entertainment dollars are equal from both the gamer and non-gamer.

I'm curious about this title. It seems so obscure and limited to such a small segment, but I'll predict that it breaks the top 30 next week. Depending on how it's reviewed, I may even have to import this one.

Actually, uhm, M-06 has been out since last August. I know, because it caused for quite an amusing scene during my recent trip to Japan. What I had read was similar to this - that it would be out in February - so I never expected to actually see it in any stores.

First store I went in to that sells video games, and there it was. I was very shocked, so I snatched up the case, went up to the counter, and in my still a bit iffy Japanese, asked if the game was really in, because I had thought it was coming out in February. The staff kind of gave me a funny look, and said yeah, it was in. The label said it had been released in August 06. As I had found it so easily, I decided to put it back on the shelf, and think the purchase over.

Two days go by, and I decide I want the game, so we head back there. Nope, it's gone. I then spend the need week looking everywhere for the game - every shop local to my girl's place, every video game shop in Den Den Town (and if it was going to be anywhere, it'd be there), but nope, nothing. I finally had to break down and ordered it from Amazon.co.jp.

So, I'm not sure what's up with it being listed as being a February release. Maybe it's a reprint? Maybe the initial release was limited, and this is a bigger release? I'd love to hear from anybody who knows.

As far as how it is, I can't give much of a review, because I bought it never having touched a guitar, and never having played an instrument period. To me, it's a virtual guitar, and it sounds like an accoustic guitar.

If you want to hear what it sounds like, here's me after some initial playing around with it and trying to get a feel for the thing. Again, I'm not a guitar player or musician or anything, so don't expect this to be very impressive.
