There was any doubt about Wii Sports Resort being fucking huge?

doicare doesn't count

There was for me, actually, for a few reasons. First, because I don't particularly care for the games and have trouble anticipating their impact without hard data to show me. Second, because the market is so slow at the moment, it seemed possible even larger games could suffer. And third, because Wii Music's reception (Combined with Animal Crossing's) made it seem plausible that Nintendo's hold on the market had slipped some.

Apparently I was wrong.

Anyone know shipment numbers for WSR? I think it will probably do 300K or so at least. More interesting will be any hardware effect.

Thanks Smoker.

So the Wii has sold vastly less third party software than the PSP (Which isn't too surprising) but has also sold less third party software than the PS3, which is surprising considering install bases. I'm quite sure Donny will jump in here and remind me of the disparity in quality of third party releases on the respective platforms, a point of contention which (once again) I am not arguing. Whatever the reason, third parties have established themselves better on the PS3 than the Wii thus far.

On the flipside, the Wii has sold more total software than the PSP, which is surprising given their install bases and time on the market. In addition, the Wii has a significantly higher attach rate than both the PS3 and PSP.

Yeah its nothing too surprising. Those numbers should see at least a temporary shift in August.

That would depend on how much profit they did on each platform, no ? Wouldn't it be possible for a 3rd party to lose money when selling 50 000 copies of a high-profile PS3 game, while at the same time making some money selling 20 000 copies of a lower-budget Wii title ?

That clearly wasn't the metric I was using. I absolutely agree that profits are indeed the bottom line, but implicit in my post was the understanding that unit sales were the metric I was going by. By that standard, the PS3 is besting the Wii despite the Wii's considerably larger install base.

But if you insist on arguing profits, I'd point out the likelihood that there have been considerably more third party Wii games made than third party PS3 games (With most of the Wii games being of poor quality). With that in mind, you might have 1.5 or even 2.0 Wii games per PS3 game. This would mean the average third party title sells 1.5-2x as much on PS3 as it does on Wii.

It's important, however. Like me, I don't think most third parties are interested in considering how good the support has been. They're interested in the final results.

Whatever the reason -- even if that reason is the vastly superior quality of the support -- the PS3 has currently sold more third party games than the Wii in Japan, both by an absolute measure and (almost certainly by a wider margin) on a per game basis. However legitimate the explanation, I would guess that this bottom line is what most publishers are considering.

Combined with production costs, of course, as CorwinB was mentioning.

No PS2 games? Is this a first?
Relatedly, looking a the Famitsu Software Pie percentages it's pretty clearly on a downward slope. It hit a new low of 3.3% a few weeks back, though that was very much helped by DS hogging nearly 2/3 of sales thanks to Kingdom Hearts and Edgeworth launches.

Ok, I mean I'm not really arguing with you or anything, I just think its a very obvious thing. Most big 3rd party games have gone to the PS3 so far. They've sold better than the trash that by and large makes up the Wii's 3rd party lineup. I don't think that's the end of the story, or we would see every single Japanese 3rd party game announced for the PS3.

I have a theory that at a very basic level Amazon sales can be somewhat useful in predicting opening performance, especially for Wii games. However, the way you are using these rankings are beyond worthless.

Amazon is a good indicator of availability. Since people can sell their games on Amazon Marketplace, if a game is higher priced through a third party seller because Amazon sold out, chances are it's a game like Infinite Space that is in high demand relative to its production numbers.

That's all, I'd say.

Yup. It's done incredibly well. Now, its only going to last for a little over a month, but still, a nice stay at the top.

I don't know what the expectations were, but they really can't have been that low.

Yes, they were.

Sloane and McHale was a budget game. The other two are super-budget games. They're not meant to be high profile or move gazillions of units. They're meant to steadily sell a few thousand a week for a long time.

I'm quite sure Donny will jump in here and remind me of the disparity in quality of third party releases on the respective platforms, a point of contention which (once again) I am not arguing. Whatever the reason, third parties have established themselves better on the PS3 than the Wii thus far.
I think that's a peculiar way of looking at it considering the different levels of support. Supply is just as important as demand. The strength of Nintendo's software is emphasised by the weakness of third parties's. You acknoledged the reasom, which is why I'm surprised that you're surprised.

There was any doubt about Wii Sports Resort being fucking huge?

doicare doesn't count

Just a personal prediction, wii sports resort opening week 240,000~

And whilst i'm in the mood for predicting things:
Blazeblue 40,000~
Alchemy Atelier RORONA Bachelor of ARANDO 28,000~

Edit. Wii sports resort probably more like 315,000~ after a very late surge in pre orders.

the problem of the low third party numbers has also something to do with the Wii audience. A friend of mine who is working at a Wii developer company (yes they make shovelware for Wii and DS) said the audience does not care reviews and what media says about a game. They go to the shop and buy what looks interessting OR they buy what is in the top ten. Now if nintendo releases a game which lands and the top ten it will stay there for a looonnnggg time and better games which a relased on the system do now perform well because they dont get the attention of the audience.

But not at all surprising to anyone who's paid more than passing attention to the Japanese console landscape this generation.

Why should I have to remind you of something that you already know so well?

To put numbers to it, through 2008 the third-party sales were PS3 at 6.03 million and Wii at 5.90 million in my Famitsu database, and probably a good part of the reason they're as close as that is the greater number of releases on the Wii. The string of big third-party titles earlier this year pushed the lead about 0.8 million higher for the PS3.

Just try to tell me that if every major PS360 third-party title had a competent Wii version in Japan that the Wii wouldn't be way ahead in third-party sales in Japan. You don't need to say "whatever the reason," when you know the reason. :p

So when MH Tri comes out, will that give the Wii the additional boost to overtake PS3 3rd-party software? Considering that MH Tri will do gangbuster sales

Yes, they were.

Sloane and McHale was a budget game. The other two are super-budget games. They're not meant to be high profile or move gazillions of units. They're meant to steadily sell a few thousand a week for a long time.

*shakes head* GAF
Well, I didn't know they were budget games.
Sloan and MacHale seems to be doing respectable numbers, and I expected something in the range of that.
If they're meant to sell like something like the Simple series, then I guess it's not too bad.

Very unlikely, given that it would have to be the biggest console 3rd party title by far to achieve this. Then again the MH series alone on PSP has sold ~80% of the entire Wii's 3rd party cumulative sales, so never say never.

Seeing Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G's budget performance makes me wonder how Animal Crossing WW or NSMB would do if they were ¥2800 instead of ¥4800.

I'm almost certain that the Wii will overtake the PS3 in 3rd Party sales by the end of this year. The only wild card will be Final Fantasy XIII of course, but I think with Tales of Graces, Samurai Warriors 3, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, and Monster Hunter 3 will be able to push it over the PS3's total.

Edit: I was just looking at the GameFAQs release list, which is normally decently accurate, and it says that Punch-Out is coming out 7-23, a week or two before Monster Hunter Tri. Any chance that Punch-Out still has a big enough following in Japan to move some units? I remember the original did over a million in Japan alone, that could be a sleeper hit over there.

The original did a million in Japan? Seriously?

Oh and I think PS3 will remain ahead in 2009 assuming FF 13 actually hits. But it could be close.

Assuming FFXIII can do say 2 million. You think Tales of Graces, Samurai Warriors 3, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, and Monster Hunter 3 combined will sell over 2 million? I don't know...

Yeah it is interesting. I guess a lot of it depends on MH Tri.

I think Tales of Graces and RE: DC are good for maybe 250K each, SW3 for about the same maybe a bit more?

Also remember FF:CC:CB..I'd imagine that would do at least 250-300K.

And I gotta believe Taiko Wii 2 is coming.

It could be close.

I think the Wii can come out ahead assuming more high profile games are announced for this fall/winter. Something we may not be thinking of, like another Taiko would definitely bring the Wii closer to the PS3.

That said, I don't think it should be a huge debate. Nintendo will destroy everyone this winter as usual.

Sounds about right. I expect about 200-300k for ToG and DSC, 300-400k for SW3, 700k-1m for MH3. Personally I don't see any of them going much higher than that, so it's rather close. I have no idea what FFCCTCB will do, it could.... bomb really hard honestly.

Yeah that's a wildcard given how radically they've changed the gameplay. I agree- it could bomb pretty hard (or it could do well, who knows).

The wild card's going to be MH3, isn't it? I'm not too optimistic myself, but we'll see how it goes.

Edit: Ack. Forum died on me for a bit and I didn't see my point had already been brought up.

the "Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles" brand is tarnished.

That's the main reason it will likely bomb regardless of gameplay or advertising.

EDIT: I want to know how many people that don't visit forums or the net are expecting TCB after the scam that was Echoes of time.

PS3 will have Tekken 5 (200k+), Tales of Vesperia (100k+), End of Eternity (100k+), Final Fantasy 13 (1 million+), PES2010 (300k+)

I'm not entirely sure how EoT was a scam. It was a stupid move, because most people got it on the DS instead, but how was it a scam? I think the brand never really meant much to begin with, so it really DOES depend on gameplay and advertising. Aside from that it depends on how well received the game is to begin with. If gamers aren't interested, then it will bomb hard, because it seems a little wacky and random, and maybe a bit too experimental. If it catches on though, it could sell well, like any game that catches on because of strong word of mouth, etc.

I would have said maybe 700k-1m for MH3 just based on the fact the 4+ year old port of MHG with virtually no enhancements and a 1 map demo of MH3 has made it to almost 250k

But with the black bundle and all the special editions being pushed for MH3 I think it might easily surpass 1m, mainly because from reading other boards and seeing sales of MH as a license the fanbase is rabid for logo'd stuff

I think MH Tri will hit 1 million before the end of the year.
