Hehe, serious? I guess that can be a reason, that it is released on a Saturday to reach more people (i would guess that in Japan that more people have the day off on a Saturday compared to on a Thursday at least) :)

I'm just kidding. I'm guessing Capcom wants to make the launch a real "event", similar to Dragon Quest- Inafune has mentioned a desire to make the series as big as DQ when talking about Tri.

MH is big enough to have its own climate in Japan. It launches when it wants to.

Hehe ok :) But it could be some true to what you say, since i would guess that there could be more people that shops at a Saturday compared to Thrusday :)

Ah ok, i understand. Ye, Monster Hunter is indeed a big franchice/serie, so i can understand that Capcom wants tro try to make it into even a bigger franchice/serie, especially on the consoles, since Monster Hunter is already pretty popular on handheld (PSP).

Ye, MH is indeed pretty big, so i can understand that they want to launch Monster Hunter 3 on a day when games usually doesnt get released on, since this way the game might be more exposure, being the only (i think?) game that is released on that date :)

Speaking about release dates, is there any reasons why most games get released on a Thursday in Japan? Is there any rules/laws says that games must (with some expections) be released on a Thursday, or has releasing games on a Thrusday become some kind of a "tradition" (or what i shall say)?

It's just like how most home media (movies, games, etc.) get released on Tuesdays in the U.S. No specific reason for that day, just a weekday so stores are stocked by the weekend.

Yeah, I was wondering why the thread wasn't bumped :p. Seriously, these threads are shrinking week by week. Hopefully next week will be better with DQIX.

MH (so as DQ) is so big and tempting teens/adults to ditch their school/work.
And holidays let them play it all night long.

I'm not joking.

DQ9 is going to be epic, you can't go anywhere in this country without seeing ads for it. Tomorrow will be exciting!

It shrinks because PS3 and PSP aren't on top . They get crowded when they surpass Wii or DS respectively with people claiming Sony wins coming from under the rocks and claiming doom for Nintendo.

From what I've always known it all started with Dragon Quest III (or IV?), people were usually ditching work (and school), going as far as having an impact on the economy, so the government asked for game release "events" to be on the week-ends/holidays.

Isn't this a fact? I've always thought it was true.

It shrinks because it is a boring week, nothing else; it will get crowded when something different from what is expected happens or a really big game is released.

Dont worry, it will sell truckload as I will be driving a truck to the shop on Aug 1st to load up the copies. As for coming to the state this year, its not going to happen.

No worse than people whining about games not being on Wii. And I wouldnt be suprised if plenty of people do wait for the PSP version. Mobility is a big deal in Japan.

So Wii went up more in WSR's second week. Interesting.

Maybe word of mouth is that good, that it's convince people who Wii Sports wasn't good enough for to get their own Wii.

But probably not.

Don't know if this was in last week's thread (it's in the official DQ thread), but preorders for DQ9 have hit 2 million.

Based on the latest Famitsu hardware numbers...
PSP comparisons: After 238 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 192.1 weeks (November 3, 2003), where DS was at 102.4 weeks (November 15, 2006), and where GBA was at 160.9 weeks (April 17, 2004).

X360 comparisons: After 186 weeks, X360 is where GCN was at 17.4 weeks (January 9, 2002), where PS3 was at 38.8 weeks (August 4, 2007), and where Wii was at 5.6 weeks (January 4, 2007).

PS3 comparisons: After 138 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 46.3 weeks (January 16, 2001), where PSP was at 69.2 weeks (April 3, 2006), where GCN was at 127.8 weeks (February 20, 2004), and where Wii was at 35.9 weeks (August 4, 2007).

Based on the latest Media Create hardware numbers...
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 62.3 / 37.7 bring total shares to 68.2 / 31.8. If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 436.6 weeks (November 16, 2017).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 34.4 / 65.6 bring total shares to 24.8 / 75.2. If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 367.4 weeks (July 20, 2016).

Dragon Quest VIII sold 2.24 million its first week. If there's anything bigger than that, it's before the period covered on Garaph. I did check Dragon Quest VII, though, and its first week was only 1.86 million.

EDIT: Checked some more non-DQ older ones, found at least one larger.

Pokémon Gold/Silver: 1.43 million
Final Fantasy VII: 2.03 million
Final Fantasy VIII: 2.50 million

FFVIII had 4 days iirc, DQ only two. But yeah, looks like FFVIII has the first week record.

My bet is 2.5 million for DQIX in the first week

Famitsu Software Stuff

Of course the big game of the week is Wii Sports Resort.

It (3615) has the biggest start of any "Wii" game yet. You can tell here that most of them had fewer days of availability on their first week, but the only one which is higher even through week two is Wii Fit (2674).
400

This also pushes the series as a whole past 10 million units.

BlazBlue did surprisingly well for a 2D fighter. It's something of a successor to Guilty Gear, and with combined PS3/X360 sales of 48K had a better first week than any Guilty Gear since 2002's PS2 Guilty Gear XX.

With so many new games this week, there was only one return from off the chart. Infinite Space went from being #1 to #39 back to #22. Bit of a supply situation there.

Famitsu Software Pie note: Thanks to Wii Sports, this is the first week that Wii has been the #1 software platform since Mario Kart Wii's second week back in April 2008.

So is a brand new (not expansion, not port, not spin off) release, I think a lot of people are going to be surprised how well MH3 does.

I would love to see it on the PSP, but the game itself regardless of system is such an upgrade over the past versions its ridiculous.

Pretty much the only reason really, unless there's something going on that we're not aware of.

I think that's exactly what it is. I even think that's part of the reason DS's schedule was so light earlier this year when DQIX was thought to be coming out in March. :lol

Friend Collection brought the non-gamers out.

Fixed? I actually think that game could be having an impact. When was the last big "non-game" that Nintendo released for the DS? Some could be coming back to get a DSi with this new Animal Crossing/Mii game. :)

Edit:
Hmmm. We know that with Monster Hunter selling great on the PSP that a lot of companies decided to come out with Monster Hunter clones (e.g. Multi-Raid, PSPortable), and it seems that ports from the PSP seem to be pretty simple to get up and going on Wii. If Monster Hunter 3 does really well on Wii, should we expect to start seeing ports of the PSP Monster Hunter clones to Wii, too?

I don't think so. The MH clones on PSP are aimed pretty much specifically at the middle school kids who play the games over local multiplayer. They're MH clones in that they support 4 players, not that they have entirely similar gameplay mechanics.

AniHawk said:
So what's causing the rise of the DSi/DSL compared to previous weeks?
I'd say it's more of a general increase than a DS-specific one. Wii is up 15%, DS is up 20%, and PSP is up 23%. Overall hardware was up 16%.
