So... what do people think of NSMB Wii's chances of getting to five million sales are?

Am I underestimating its legs?

Well, is it just me that find this first week of SMG2 as disappointing?
not disappointing, it did more than it precedessor

but also i don't understand such those positive comments... it has been 2 years and 1/2 since Mario Galaxy, how many Wii have been sold in such this time ?
and it sold just 40% more than Galaxy 1

it has some chances to become million seller, but really far fom NSMB results

That's very simplified. When White Knight Chronicles 2 comes out it will be 1,5 year from the first and PS3 has already more than doubled its sales since then. Will the sequel have to double the sales of the original to be considered a success?

The target for Galaxy 2 always was to at least match the sales of Galaxy 1. NSMBW was out of the question.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

That's just such poor logic really.

Yes, it does. If WKC doesn't sell at least 700k, it's a total failure. If it doesn't sell 1 million, Level 5 should abandon the PS3. I agree with this assessment completely!

that depends on whether or not you think the ps3's install base in december 2008 limited wkc or not, same as the galaxy1->galaxy2 comparison.

i mean, on the one hand, individual game sales clearly don't scale linearly with hardware install base changes. on the other hand, there are also clearly games whose sales are limited by the hardware install base that they're on because not every game is a system seller.

(note that i'm not endorsing this for galaxy 2 or wkc 2 in particular)

wkc2 will be an interesting case regardless, because it's post-ps3 revival (works in its favour) and it's a direct narrative sequel to a poorly received game that most people who bought probably didn't finish or exhaust (works against it).

Just a scattered musing: would a 2.5D Super Mario game (played on a 2D plane but presented in 3D like Klonoa) ever do as good sales-wise as the traditional Mario sidescroller?

there's no evidence either way because there are no 2.5d-ala-Klonoa platformers except Klonoa, Tomba... and... uh... no, that's just about it.

Mario Kart Wii
Smash Bros Brawl
New Super Mario Bros Wii

those titles really had a successfull 1st week, considering they are big franchises for the market home leader

they all broke records for Nintendo games

so i cannot say Galaxy 2 first week is successfull just because sold 340k instead of 250k...
when Smash Bros in nov.2001 sold 350k it was a really strong result, there were less than 1M Gamecube sold around Japan.
honestly i expected around 400-450k for Galaxy 2, iirc i read somewhere in sales-age topic it had the double preoders Galaxy 1 had (source comgnet)

is that still a poor logic consideration ?

I think I saw that somewhere too, but it's false. Galaxy 2 had 50% more preorders from Galaxy 1 (comgnet).

Thanks! This provides two things.

1) Confirmation of the ballpark for Inside-Game's numbers.
2) Let's us compare Famitsu 1st day to Famitsu 1st week. :)

Hrmph! :D

So there you have it. Like spherical worlds for Super Mario Galaxy, what we have here is the genesis of a conceptual idea for a true sequel to Super Mario World.

There you go Mr Miyamoto. Less Wii ____, more Super Mario that's what I say!!

Are we doing any predictions for Xenoblade? Or are we all just settling on "might do 100k, probably won't, hopefully it does close to 200k LTD"?

50K first week.
Drops off the chart after that.

Reading about Wii Party I think it is Wii Play Resort + Mario Party Wii. 10 million for FY that Iwata is expecting are definetely possible.

"HMV also confirms that Nintendo will be selling the game as part of an optional Wiimote bundle. A retailer revealed yesterday that Nintendo would be offering the game bundled with a pink or white Wiimote."

Yeah, 10 million easy. This will just replace WiiPlay.

Which GTA is this? The expansion for PS3/360? No point doing one for Mega Man Zero Collection imo, it's not even going to chart.
The Lost and Damned + The Ballad of Gay Tony episodes on one disc.

Mega Man will chart just not in top 10.

Ah okay.

Yes, that's what I meant. It won't be in the top10, so I don't really see much of a point honestly. It's really up to everyone else though.

The Pink Wiimote is usually bundled with Motion+, so hopefully, this uses Motion+, too.

So, given that Wii Party's success is assured, I guess the million-dollar question is "Will it do anything for the Wii's hardware sales?" and I think there's the chance that it might. Perhaps it won't be as strong as NSMB Wii in that regard, but I'd expect more than the Wii benefited from WSR.

wkc2 will be an interesting case regardless, because it's post-ps3 revival (works in its favour) and it's a direct narrative sequel to a poorly received game that most people who bought probably didn't finish or exhaust (works against it).

Though actually, WKC2 will come with the whole WKC1 story mode in the new tweaked engine. Which is the only reason I'll probably buy it.

Well the last one did 20k first week (before it dropped off the charts forever), so it's not that much different.

Well, some people expected Galaxy 1 to do better than Galaxy 1. I expected it to do worse. The first week is much better than my expectation, I am looking forward to it's legs.

Chris1964 said:
I think I saw that somewhere too, but it's false. Galaxy 2 had 50% more preorders from Galaxy 1 (comgnet).

Hmm. 50% more preorder (comgnet), but only 33% more first week # (famitsu). Either comgnet is more Galaxy 2 centric, or it means Galaxy 2's non-preorder sales are not as good as Galaxy 1's

¥4.800 standalone
¥6.800 with Pink or White Wiimote

Hmm. The price is ¥1.000 too high for me. ¥3.800 standalone is a better price. Get more people to try out the game.

Mario Kart Wii

Seeing as you seem to set an absolute bar for what consitutes as a successful first week, and setting it as high as +600k (Mario Kart, the smallest first week of the games you mentioned), then yeah that's pretty poor logic.

I agree with him, though.

There's simply no reason why the 'big new 3D Mario game' shouldn't be an astronomical seller, even greater than those he listed. (Yeah, I'm going back to SM64 too.)

I don't understand why people are satisfied with "great" sales for SMG/SMG2 (esp. in Japan), especially when "great" by Nintendo standards is, well, average at best.

The only reason I could imagine that Iwata and co. would be satisfied with these figures is if Iwata firmly wants Mario Galaxy to be a gift to longtime fans of SM64, and to be a critical darling, but not so much intended to reap massive sales rewards.

That's fair enough, but with the Cosmic Guide, various in-game tutorials and the Tutorial DVD, you'd suspect that Iwata, EAD and Miyamoto all see potential for massive popularity and are hopeful for it... but let's be real. It's just not reaching anywhere near a blue-ocean potential.

Would spending the time to make "3D Mario" more appealing to larger crowds turn off longtime fans? Is there no better way to strike a balance between challenge and ease-of-access in this genre? Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna get shit for going in-depth with this again.

Chris1964

When Galaxy 1 didn't achieve ''blue-ocean potential'' how could a direct sequel to it do it?

I don't remember Nintendo saying Galaxy 2 (or Galaxy 1) would be a 10M seller but they said it last year for Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and NSMBW and this year for Wii Party.

Expectations for 3D Mario from Nintendo are in line with reality not in line with wishful thinking.

First of all, there's no guarantee that any of this is going to help with the game's sales. None whatsoever. It's just as likely that no one will watch the DVD or ever bother putting the game into their Wii long enough to experience the tutorials or Cosmic Guide.

Second, if the Blue Ocean were to come knockin' on 3D Mario's door, it would take a while. It wouldn't be at launch. They don't jump in fast. Be patient.

Third, the fact that Nintendo would like the public to fully accept 3D Mario along the same lines as NSMB Wii is not the same as them expecting it to happen. They're doing what they can to try and bridge the gap, but that gap just might prove unbridgeable. People that like 2D Mario may very well not have the slightest interest in 3D Mario.

My wife loves NSMB Wii but doesn't have much interest in playing 3D Mario. She tried it, she didn't like it. I think that's fairly common amongst the blue ocean folks.

I didn't say Galaxy 2 could achieve blue-ocean potential. Nor am I saying it's underperforming its expected sales. I'm saying 3D Mario as a whole has performed far under what was hoped and dare I say expected for it, ever since SM64 was in the process of being launched.

The question is... can or should anything be done about it? Is there a way to go back to the drawing board with this concept of "Mario in 3 dimensions"? Isn't it the right time, now? I guess this question is irrelevant to the thread at hand -- a cold calculation of sales -- but with my tag and reputation I'm not about to start a separate thread on the future of 3D Mario. (The fact that very few other people seem willing to talk about it, or believe that it is an issue worth being talked about, is probably the nail in that point-of-view's coffin.)

I know, I wasn't declaring anything about SMG2 persé, but trends are not really in its favor. The fact SMS sold half SM64 has always felt like general audiences said "no more" to the style of gameplay.

It might, but they haven't actually yet created a 3D game with generally linear strips of levels and clear level-end goals and a clear adventure from Mushroom Kingdom to Bowser. You know, what one would have expected a 3-dimensional translation of Super Mario Bros. to be ever since 1995. Admittedly, SMG2 gets close to bits of this formula... with some pure 2.5D levels and some narrow 3D level sections, but again, those parts are lost in a sea of confusion to many gamers, no?
