Media Create Sales: Week 1, 2014 (Dec 30 - Jan 05)

read through the last few pages of the thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=747328&page=53

I do feel now sony may miss a chance to revive the console market in Japan. Initial demand will be OK I assume, If SCEJA can help to port games like Persona 5, KH 2.5, new tales, Sen no Kiseki 2, etc. to PS4, I can see PS4 become really popular and therefore become a healthy platform for mid-tier games. It's pity it won't happen.

I don't think we're in a position to judge. If the software support is there and Sony puts in the work they could have a good performance in Japan.

The problem is software support is not there. West launch tells us cross-gen games are quite helpful during launch year, while Japanese developers hate to make multiplatform games...

Unless something changes extremely quickly, the software support is just not there anytime soon. Well, at least the software support to make a system sell well at that price in a country dominated by handhelds and mobile.

I wonder if FFX Vita success not only translates to the obvious FFXII but Kingdom Hearts as well. To be honest I never undestood why 1.5 wasn't on Vita when FFX was announced for it.

Vita only 10k behind PS3 despite having a quarter of the userbase is making me hot. Do we know which platform is ahead on the PSN charts?

The weird thing is that on PSvita PSN Weekly ranking (12/30 -1/5), FFX-2 is on first place, FFX is on second place and the twin pack is nowhere to be found on top 10.

I always have a wired feeling it's related to the policy every retail PSV game should offer a digital version. We do know SE has problem putting BBS on PSN and iirc kh 1.5 is also not on PSN..

Edit: beaten. Seems like I'm not the only one to think so.

1) Square Enix does not believe in Vita.
2) Vita games are required to be released digitally. Square Enix doesn't have digital distribution rights to Kingdom Hearts.
3) 4GB Vita game card limit.
4) The HD ReMixes were made to bring Kingdom Hearts back to consoles after years in the handheld ghetto.
Of course, Nomura feels like Vita is a console so ... ???

But really, it's just #1.

I agree with you both that right now we don't have the needed software support to "save" consoles in Japan. However I'm not certain that's unattainable. The console is already selling just on hopes, dreams and promises already in the other markets, it wouldn't surprise me if it happens in Japan as well.

Although western lineups is medicore, we all know big one is coming latter this year, while Japanese developers need maybe 2 more years to jump into current-gen.

It's actually a good time to contact Capcom about next console MH though, since PS4 sells excellent overseas and Capcom seems eager to expand MH franchise in the west.

Every Vita game has to have a digital version. I know that Disney has some very stupid licensing.

I always have a wired feeling it's related to the policy every retail PSV game should offer a digital version. We do know SE has problem putting BBS on PSN and iirc kh 1.5 is also not on PSN..

Hmm, does the same nowadays apply for 360 games, I wonder? If that is one reason the vita isn't getting the remasters it could also imply that the 360 didn't get them for the very same reason. I always found KH3 being on XB1 while the remasters are PS3 exclusive pretty weird.

Yeah, #1 should be enough for a reason. All else could easily be fixed or ignored.

Well, I think FFX was probably encouraged by Sony (some kind of marketing deal, a little help in development, I dunno, so it's not as if Square jumped on that bandwagon totally by themselves.

Still, those good Vita sales could mean we'll get, at least, some more enhanced ports from S-E (Type-0 should be the top priority, since there isn't a western version and I want to play the so called best 7th gen FF game)

And there are those memory stick problems too. It makes me wonder what Sony where thinking when they released an almost HD handheld but yet the max card size is 4GB. At the same the 3DS, which uses a much lower resolution (so assets are smaller) has 8GB for bigger games.

One of my biggest worries about Borderlands 2 (performance problems aside) is how bad everything is going to look once you try to fit everything in 3.3GB (especially since I doubt it'll have cell-shading). Well... we'll probably have a 2GB patch since day one.

Wii is dead according to MC.
No more numbers from now.
Still tracking 360 though.

Really ironical, since the X360 launched before the Wii, and its current numbers are absolutely ridiculous (I mean, it was at 356 units sold a few weeks ago). Meanwhile, the Wii has generally been over 1k (yep, deader than dead)... doesn't make sense.

But I was expecting that... but looks like Famitsu is still going at it, for some reason. Then again, didn't they keep tracking the PS2 for quite a while during the previous gen?

This is simply a bad argument. WiiU did much better than expected in Japan over the holidays. You are taking LTD data and using it to castigate holiday sales.
Because the holiday sales didn't come near repairing the damage in Japan. The only region where WiiU is pretty much selling at all.

Media Create sales are even worse apparently. People expecting Mario to save the WiiU were just wrong. It's a dead console.

Monster Hunter is a handheld series now. The only console games are likely going to be ports of Frontier, Online, some social junk, and 3DS games.

No. I'm just pointing out that he was correct. That's all.

Thank you.
Oh, i thought the "no" was referring to that he wasnt mixing him up with someone else, and that "you're correct" was referring to that he didnt mix him up.

By the way, thank you for what? :)

I wonder if it has something to do with that the Wii is officially discontinued by Nintendo in Japan, while i dont think the Xbox 360 is.

Yeah, definitely, but it's been discontinued for a few months already. Surprised the 360 isn't, since it's been doing mostly sub 1k weeks in 2013. I doubt Microsoft is producing many JP 360 anymore...

Maybe somewhat, but didn't Vita have a shitty holiday 2012?
There's probably a few ingredients are work here, but I'd think the new model has to be a noticeable piece of the pie. The new model, the improved flow of software, the memory card price drop, and the hardware price drop from February are all definitely helping.

it did. probably one of the worst all time. And it's because it has the worst holiday lineup ever - only one decent sized game in the last 2 month which was the multiplatform AKB game on 12/20. This year it has price drop, new model and much bigger games (GE2 and FFX HD)

Factor in downloads and it already is.

3M Worldwide probably. So well deserved.

Thought it's already confirmed by Nintendo that LM2 is over 3 mil a couple months ago.

Pretty crazy considering it just came out of nowhere.
If you want back to the GCN launch and told Nintendo that the sequel to Luigi's Mansion would sell three million copies, they'd probably shoot you out of a cannon.
Didnt Luigi's Mansion sell pretty well too?

Yeah, i agree. And when PS2 was officially discontinued in Japan (end of 2012), then they stopped tracking it almost at once. I'm not sure how they are reasoning the Wii VS Xbox 360 tracking.

First 8 weeks:

Vita TV: 5,313 (81,557)
PSP GO: 3,260 (67,660)
GB Micro: 9,349 (328,039)

Vita TV debuted with 42,172, and in the following seven weeks it sold 39,385.

I don't know, but we do know that the ratio digital/physical is much higher on Vita and that the VIta version seemed to be harder to find in stores.
With the sales between the two versions being relatively close, I don't think it's hard to guess on which platform the digital sales are higher, the real is question is more "by how much?"

I'm surprised Vita and Wii U are still holding strong. 3D World is doing pretty well, too. I thought it would go downhill, but nope. Such a nice surprise after a very disappointing first week. I wonder if it will have legs to cross the 1 million mark, though.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Wasn't Wii discountinued? Or maybe because Wii doesn't really get any games released for it.
I would thin it's because of the software situation, 360 at least get its multiplattform releases from time to time.

2013 Market in Review (December 31st, 2012 - December 29th, 2013)
  • 8.15 million hardware units sold (13.3% decrease from 2012)
  • 49.02 million software units sold (2.3% decrease from 2012)

  • 158.9 billion yen hardware revenue (11.2% decrease from 2012)
  • 266.1 billion yen software revenue (3.7% decrease from 2012)
  • 425.0 billion yen total revenue (down 6.6% from 455.2 billion yen in 2012)
  • Click here for previous months

Thank you for the work going into this post, even if it reads like a cancer diagnosis...

Anyone done the math on Wii U total Japanese hardware sales for the month of December?

Gotta be somewhere between 350 and 500k right? Not too shabby. I imagine it probably did at least 500k in NA. Around a million worldwide units for Dec. is not bad at all.

Well, it did 450k for the entire Q by my calculations (Mediacreate) and is at 270k for Oct/Nov in US, other than that we don't know.

Probably around 1.5m WW for the entire Q though.
