Amazing if only I could read Japanese :(

Its crazy how some of the games sold on ps1. I mean parasite eve a million seller crazy.

The Japanese sales landscape for games has totally changed after the PS2 generation. I think just looking at the overview of how many titles are selling extremely well on the platforms over the years shows the changes in the industry as well as the flow consumer interest from consoles to portables. Look at this:

Consoles:

FC - 42 >million titles (incomplete data)

SFC - 29 >million titles (incomplete data)

PS - 70 >500k titles including 18 >million titles
SS - 4 >500k titles including 1 >million title
N64 - 18 >500k titles including 5 >million titles

PS2 - 70 >500k titles including 17 >million titles
GC - 10 >500k titles including 1 >million title

PS3 - 13 >500k titles including 1 >million title
Wii - 27 >500k titles including 14 >million titles

---

Handhelds:

GB (1989-1995) - 11 >million titles (incomplete data)

GB/GBC (1996-2002) - 16 >500k titles including 8 >million titles

GBA - 18 >500k titles including 4 >million titles

NDS - 67 >500k titles including 35 >million titles
PSP - 15 >500k titles including 4 >million titles

Does anyone actually know what happened with Clap Handz and its terrible PS3 support?

Why did Sony/Clap Handz not release more Golf games or any Tennis/other sports games for the PS3?

I don’t get it
Clap Hanz isn't a huge team, and they were throwing PSP pretty strong support simultaneously. Looking at it as PS2 vs PS3 isn't really the whole picture, it's really PS2 vs PSP+PS3.

As much as I should accept the trend, it's kinda depressing :(

All I can see here is the overall market shrinking, affecting handhelds less than home console on the rise of lower budget games that sell above 500k, or low profit projects.

And reinforcing the assumption that Wii/DS success came out of left field for the industry. It was an amazing thing that will probably never be repeated.

Early numbers? Was about to ask whether there were any last minute predictions for the Vita fall/Wii U bump this week.

If those Famitsu numbers pan out, Vita's held surprisingly well. Wii U bump is not much to write home about but at least it got a bump.

Never owned a handheld in my life (well other than a free gameboy pocket i got for opening a student account 12+ years ago lol)

So no idea about the PSP games Clap Handz have made, so from the PS3 perspective i was excited with EBG5 then disappointed 3+ years later no follow up was released

Damn. This is an eye opener. Handhelds are becoming a real problem to the console industry in Japan. It seems the PS3 doing so bad really hurt the space and the DS and introduction of PSP just added fuel to the fire. I pray to the gods that the PS4 or even WiiU succeed and revive the console sector. Having two home consoles doing bad may as well be the tipping point of the console industry.

Thanks for the numbers, they are really interesting.

Am I the only one surprised at how comparatively low the number of PSX and PS2 million sellers is? I honestly expected considerably more, around Super Famicom level.

Again? What do you mean! :lol

Game & Wario

CADWYAI.png

lol, not too far from reality.

I wonder if its sell-through is closer to 20% rather than 40%.

Fate/Extra CCC - 72k
Oboromuramasa - 45k
Dragon Quest X Wii U - 33k
Game and Wario - 22k

I think the dramatic shift post-PS2 is a bit too drastic to simply write it off as overall market shrinking though. For portable sales to got from 18 >500k titles in one generation to 82 >500k titles in the next is a huge change. I think it has a lot to do with portable technology catching up to the point where a sizable audience decided that it was good enough for them to skip out on console titles. The lower cost of the games (to consumers, but also as a result of lower development costs as you said) also helped them make that switch as console game prices steadily increased with each generation.

Weegee over 400k this week, DQX and G&W did small numbers. :( Dragon Ball has officially passed Shin Budokai after going UP this week (holiday?) and is now at 142k.

Edit: From Famitsu.

How much did Oboromuramasa sell in the Wii first week and overall?

Does anybody have numbers for the first Fate/Extra? After so many delays, I was wondering what kind of impact that might have had on CCC, but it looks like it did pretty well for itself.

Looks like Luigi's Mansion 2 is going to sell through its first shipment. Are there any new releases for Vita next week? That would help a lot if there are some new releases.

Wii U is definitely going to go down next week.

This is exactly what I was thinking. You see what duckroll, Iwata? Make a handheld with the 'Gameboy philosophy' in mind and you might be in luck. :p

Muramasa, a super niche title on the Vita, outsold both new WiiU releases - a Dragon Quest game and a Wario game! Omg! (lol)

So Muramasa on Vita managed to sell in one week what it sold in its entire lifetime on Wii.
Guess Vita is a lost cause!

Where? Hong Kong?

Green means healthy. Red means dying. Game & Wario is doing great, then.

2nd place photo finish:

Mario Kart 7: 2,001,246
NSMN2 1,995,947

I need to check if this is a record for oldest hardware inside the top 30: 15. [PS2] FFXI whatever - 11.5k. (Game Boy must be the only contender.) PS2 last appeared in Jun, 2011, nearly a 2 year gap, btw.

Woah, Game & Wario megabombed. Biggest NCL bomb since Wii Play Motion imo. Time to move past the minigames probably...

DQX is low but more understandable with the strong digital incentive. Hopefully SE gives us some figures.

Muramasma did near 90k on Wii iirc, though that included the budget reprint.

I think DQX failed because 1. it's on Wii and 2. People just might have liked it that much, maybe bad word of mouth? What IS the general thought on the game in Japan? I mean it's the largest departure in the series, the game would've done EONS better period if it was like DQ8.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Wii U continues to be an embarrassment for Nintendo lol. Vita did well but it's downhill from here as well thanks to Sony's lack of planning for April.

It's an MMO on a Nintendo system? Wouldn't that be a recipe for definitely less sales? :p

Countdown to "wait til next week!" posts, and the fourth week in a row of utter surprise for certain people.

Strong is only relative to what it actually did though. Seeing as there's nothing coming up in the next couple of months, I would expect numbers to go down from here.

No one expected Vita to fall sub 10k this week. No one is expecting it for next week. Near future though? Wouldn't be shocked.

Yeah, drop this week is only slightly smaller than I expected (~28K). Think it'll be below 10K again by the end of the month... four weeks is enough time.

I´d bet that a lot of people were pissed off because it was a MMO. Nobody asked for this.
