Uhuh, so is BT3DS expected then? Better, then it'll show us who is right :p I think the 3D effect could make for "special ideas" like Kawashima said (a more deep sight training perhaps). I say it now, million seller AT LEAST. What number do you say Chris? < 500.000? :p

How was it not a mistake? When you are a developer of over half of the top 10 best-selling game series in Japan, you should probably release an entry for at least one of those when launching a new system. Having something like Mario Kart 3DS available at launch wouldn't have crowded out third parties, but it would have sold systems beyond those first 2-3 weeks.

Okay it's obvious in this thread most people haven't read Nintendo's shareholder conference from last quarter.

The pack-in software was considered The 3ds's wii sports, it was suppose to be the killer software. Nintendo's plan give away the core killer software for free and then hope sales go to third party games at the top.

Spot-on - it was also compared to Wii Play in a recent Iwata Asks, IIRC. They had obviously gambled that the built-in software - Face Raiders, Streetpass Quest/Puzzle, AR Games and the other apps, as well as the 3D effect itself - would work in a similar way to Wii Sports/Wii Play and spark the kind of viral spread the Wii enjoyed early on.

If that's the case then Nintendo is doing a piss poor job of actually advertising that with commercials or even at events. Shouldn't their be display units locked into the AR Games mode with a AR card under some glass. Or talking about Face Raiders a lot more? Talking more about the Mii Plaza games?

Pilotwings Resort seems to me to be the Wii Sports of the 3DS with how much it's been used as the face of the 3DS.

I've mentioned this before in the tread, but

1. it was suppose to be a viral effect

2. it's kind hard to run commercials or have events, when because of "appropriateness" you cancel(along with everyone else) all your events and commercials

3. Even the few display units you do have are being turned off for power conservation.

The worry is, now that they are able to do these things again, can the 3ds possibly become talk of the town again considering how bad sales have been?

I think so, but I think it's going to require almost a "relaunch" - hit hard with commercials, promote heavily and get everyone talking about it again. Perhaps it would be best to wait for a key game, or perhaps not, but there's definitely a risk in letting things slide for too much longer.

May would be a good window for this - new games, the eShop and Golden Week all coming together with a HEAVY ad push could get things back on track, but if Nintendo squander that opportunity they'll have a loooong, tough stretch until the holidays.

It's pretty funny if Nintendo thought FaceRaiders was going to be a killer app. I didn't even know what it was until I got my 3DS, and I post on GAF.

You could say (mostly) the same things about Mario 64 DS, yet that sold over 1.1 million in Japan. Seriously, do you actually think OoT 3D would be "lucky" to sell just over a third of what Spirit Tracks did?
Well, on GBA we saw rereleases of both SNES-level Mario games and the SNES Zelda game. The Mario games did significantly better. But 200K should be a really really low bar to pass.

This made me curious what the biggest non-MH Capcom DS/PSP games were. Short answer is a handful each of Mega Man Star Force and Ace Attorney games on DS, then Sengoku Basara and Liberty City Stories as the next biggest PSP games.

There we go. So in Japan, if the NDS came out in December of 04, and Nintendogs came out in April of 05, we're talking about a 4 month time period before sales started to pick up, and about 10-12 months before it started to print money. Now I have a point of reference to gauge how well the 3DS is doing.
2004-11-29

You can see the Nintendogs/Easter blip around week 20 there, then a very gradual move upwards after that settled down. Looks like the next notable blips were Jump Superstars and Tamagotchi closer to week 40, though Brain Age and Big Brain Academy were both still selling very well consistently. The real IT PRINTS MONEY! moment that shocked everyone happened early in its second year, shortly after which came the shortages and the crazy times of 100+K all the time.

The arguments are not imaginary; they were taking place directly above my posts (and indeed sporadically throughout the whole thread).

Secondly, in my opinion, the only thing that was a mistake was their projections, not the strategy. I'm sure they projected too high regardless (why? I don't know) and obviously a huge factor is the earthquake and the canceled promotion and henceforth the weaker software sales due to a smaller userbase).

The question is, is Nintendo worried? If they are any more worried (removing the earthquake factor) than they normally would have been, then yes you are right it was obviously a mistake.

But you cannot say that that is "laughably provable."

We don't even know Numbers beyond the first 2 days in Europe. The only thing we know is that Nintendo due to the end of the fiscal year channel stuffed for a positive spin.

In the first 2 days at least 33% of the initial GAF estimated shipment was soldout. This also coincides with the largest Nintendo Handheld launch ever in Europe.

The only thing these thread contain are alot of annoying as fuck chicken littles hoping and praying for disaster

In UK, there was nothing said about best Nintendo handheld launch ever in Europe, I think. And they greatly missed their first week projections there. 3DS games on the UK sales chart had a huge drop in the second week and they didn't even chart in the first week in many european territories.

The point charlequin is making is not "did the 3DS sell good number?"
He is pointing that Nintendo greatly overestimate the first shipment and stockholders are not going to be happy.

I can't see how they'd miss shipment targets in EU/NA. There were only a few days between launch and the end of the quarter/FY, and they shipped the glut at once.

Nintendo can't have missed the target. They definetelly shipped 2.5 million 3DS for day 1, adding possibly another 500k from Japan. How many they sold is another matter.

Well, good timing from those azalyn shipment predictions, was thinking about next week titles to predict and the Homefront PS3 surprised me a little. Should we include it? The 3 baseball, persona, pilotwings and SRT Z 2nd are taken for granted.

24./26. [NDS] New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo) - 4,247 / 6,097,954 (+15%)

So I was thinking about this game's stamina again and wondering if any other games showed up in the Top 30 so long after release. A bit of SQL, and the answer I get is: at least not in the scope of what I've got in Garaph. By a lot. I was getting a lot of false results, though--looks like some of the numbers updated from a Top 500 or whatever accidentally got ranks 1-30 applied to them.

Game: Age in days at most recent Famitsu Top 30 appearance

New Super Mario Bros.: 1760
Animal Crossing Wild World: 1404
Mario Kart DS: 1389
Mario Kart Wii: 1076
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl: 1060

Sometime we must make a serious conversation about that opinion that Nintendo has to hold back so that it gives air to third parties.

Small but important to some people sales thing. It seems that Famitsu stopped providing monthly top 10 at its site. Yahoo hasn't uploaded for some weeks and only oricon has remained.
I'd like to see what people think about the idea of holding back first party games to give third party ones a better chance to sell. I'm really not sure what I think about it personally, but I do know it made me not pick up anything for launch so clearly that tactic didn't work for me. However I don't imagine many people buy a system without some sort of game so maybe the plan did work?

This is kind of a gamble imo. The handheld entries do like 100-150k and it's been 3 years since the console ones and that was with the PS2 user base and even those opened at like 361k for SRW Z1. Personally I felt the sales would be somewhere between, but apparently Namco and retailers feel they will be even MORE than they were on the PS2 3 years ago.

Will either be huge success or fill the discount bins after a week. :X

The original Super Mario Bros. is the real monster.

Random week of 1991 we have points of Famitsu.

{1991.12.20 - 1991.12.26} 28. [NFC] Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo) {1985.09.13} - 369

2296 days. Maybe it has charted for longer. There are many weeks missing.

Probably around the time Super Mario comes out.

Secondly, in my opinion, the only thing that was a mistake was their projections, not the strategy.

Their "strategy" was the strategy that was supposed to meet those projections -- projections that were not inherently unreasonable for the successor to the DS. So, no: their strategy was a failure, because their excessive pricing counteracted whatever casual viral appeal (or just pre-emptive buying-the-DS'-successor-without-any-software) effect was supposed to frontload their sales.

The question is, is Nintendo worried?

Yes, absolutely. Any company is worried when they blow their projections and their stock slips as a result. Again, this is not a particularly ambiguous question.

The DS approach really seems straightforwardly correct to me: drive heavy upfront with strong first-party software, then pull back after a year or so to let the third-parties step into the breach.

SCEJ's PSP launch only had like a Manichi Issho, and Hot Shots Golf game. I imagine there's a bunch of stuff they have planned but haven't announced. The LocoRoco team has been silent since 2009, and Acquire heavily hinted at an NGP Badman game.

Because of this soft software launch PSP was dead 3 months after release.

NGP Badman is likely the NGP rts they confirmed to be in development. They're also making an NGP stealth action game, which is probably Techu for From Software.

They have an unannounced 3DS rpg in development too, which wouldn't be Class of Heroes 3D since that's both announced and not internally developed.

Exactly. To a certain degree, I think a pure third-party launch could work, you'd just have to put kits in developers' hands a year or more in advance, work directly with producers to design titles and new IPs with significant appeal, and then do a huge first-party marketing push for the individual third-party titles -- i.e. all concepts that are apparently foreign to Nintendo.

Major 3rd parties had kits in Q1 2010, about a year before launch. This was the source of the press leaks I thought, which is what caused Nintendo to do that early IR announcement of the system?

If 3rd parties only got kits 6 months before launch, how did they have E3 demos ready 9 months before launch and playable demos around TGS time 6 months before launch?

Torne looks like a secret PS3 killer app. That's a pretty decent attach rate right?
