Media Create Sales: Week 14, 2013 (Apr 01 - Apr 07)

Ah ah yeah, I just put the international name to be more recognizable by every gaffers.
The quote of me sounds like me being a smart-ass! Not the case!

And worst week for Vita shortages with Tomodachi released next week. And sad to see Vita below 20,000, I order mine next week:(

Hopefully Nintendo will release Luigi digital sales on the 24th (I'm guessing they will as it's consistently topping those charts too).

To give us an idea, the 230k it sold in Japan in March alone would be enough to cover:

- 5 months of sales in Japan.
- or 7 months of sales in the US.

(using February's weekly average)

If Sony had adjusted the production to the sales levels pre-price cut, it is not weird that they'd be caught without enough supply.

Personally, I think the fact there are no significant releases this week, or next week or until I can't even remember when is more relevant to the "big" drop in sales, but I'm not gonna argue with the people who actually have the means to check whether there is supply or not. =P

This makes some sense, but it's very strange that Sony would go for a Hail Mary if they didn't have the supply to keep numbers up in the event of its success.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Will Vita & Wiii U streams cross again? When's the next half decent release for either?

1. Over the course of my week I went to 4 game stores in my town. I was not looking specifically for the Vita but it was readily available both new and used at each shop. I don't live in Tokyo or Osaka so I can't speak for them but in my neck of the woods there is ample supply and I find supply constraints to be a bit hard to believe.

2. WiiU software shelves are no longer in the front of 2 of the stores. 3DS is the first thing you see, PS3 has the second best place.

3. Already seeing used copies of game and Wario. It is a game that might appeal to casual games who pick up the system at a department store but at the dedicated game stores used copies really eat into sales.

4. Might mean nothing but 2 convience stores are sold out of 5000yen Nintendo point cards. I would love to speculate that these cards are being bought to buy eShop copies of DQX but more likely they are being used for 3DS games and 5000yen cards save time.

5. Commercials for Tomodachi collection are running frequently. Much more than the launch of the first game.

6. WiiU ads have all but dried up on prime time TV. I don't know about other times. They might still run during the anime block.

7. Soul Sacrufice is still being pushed on TV. I would say its second only to Tomodachi collection.

8. Kids in my classes are drawing Luigi pictures in their notebooks and in their artwork (alongside Mario usually) I have been here for almost 9 years and its the first time I've noticed this. He is almost always ignored. In my mind that is the final proof that this is the Year of Luigi.

Was hoping the vita bump would last longer, but it needs some more games to sustain it I think.

19 K is better then before, but I was hoping to get a new baseline higher then that.

Both Vita and WiiU dropped about the same, percentage wise, but because people expected a bigger WiiU drop and a smaller Vita drop, the reactions are expected.

I also don't believe this claim that Vita is supply constrained.

Sony really should drop the price of PS3 too. It's more expensive than basic WiiU in Japan.

I think they will at E3, alongside with a TLOU bundle (though that's obviously more relevant to the west). They also don't want the PS3 and PS4 prices to be too close to each other.

Amazing numbers for Luigi. Looks destined to hit at least 1m.

I think I read on Twitter at some point that you needed to buy the download version of DQX Wii U to continue your Wii save. Am I crazy or is that the case? I imagine that a good percentage of buyers have been digital.

So happy for Luigi.

In terms of what's dated in the near term, this was posted in the last thread:

06/27 - Toukiden
07/25 - Dragon's Crown

Wii U
04/24 - Pokemon Scramble U

Not sure if there are other games that were omitted.

This is so awesome. It's great to see that Nintendo still has the touch and are able to bring positive creative influence on new generations.

It's too early to say if that'll be the baseline.

I think he may be just saying that since it's already dropped below 20-something K, that the baseline (whatever it ends up being) will then have to be lower than what he previously hoped, and that's disappointing to him.

I'm kinda impressed that the Vita is still at 20k. The news of supply constraints just cements that.

I'm also in the camp that thinks LM2 should've been a Wii-U game.

LM2 started development before the developers even knew the 3DS existed and were given mere hints as to what specs to target for during the initial months of the project.

Moving it to the Wii U would mean a 2014 release.

Monster Hunter 3G BEST

Week 12 - 5.947
Week 13 - <5.947
Week 14 - 5.607 / 259.298

Legend tbh.

I hope it keeps selling 5k, it might reach 350k LTD! I need new ads.

Vita doesn't look supply constrained (or like it is selling above RRP) on Amazon Japan to me.

2013 model is 900 yen off with stock available.

Limited editions only have a handful of stock and the 2011 versions have plenty of stock.

Very interesting about SS. Seems like Sony is really banking on this title to carry the Vita. I don't think this is a bad approach, but Sony need to have something else to take up the mantle from when SS loses steam which might be sooner than they think.

Year of Luigi, indeed.

6. WiiU ads have all but dried up on prime time TV. I don't know about other times. They might still run during the anime block.

2 Wii U ads played during Pokemon Smash on Sunday (Karaoke and Pokemon Rumble U), so they're still about. I still see people buzzing around the section, but no one buying yet, in stores.

Tomodachi Collection is starting to feel like the 'next big thing'. It's been 6 months since Animal Crossing. Time to move on. Train Station, TV, game stores, convenience stores.

Here's the meaningless Wii U eshop charts (all time) for those interested.

1. Dragon Quest X
2. NSMBU
3. Nintendo Land
4. MH3GHD
5. Nano Assault Neo (197 ratings)
6. Game & Wario
7. Zombi U
8. Simple Series for Wii U, Vol. 1
9. Musou Orochi 2 Hyper
10. Sports Connection

Fairly soft week all the way around but I guess that's to be expected this time of year. Luigi is doing very, very well so props to Nintendo for that one.

I also see the PSV version of One Piece still hanging on and it looks like it's a fairly safe assumption that it's going to cross the 100k barrier for physical copies sold. I would assume that with the ease of the port that kind of sales performance is a good sign and an indicator that we're going to see more of this type of dual sku in the future. It's obviously not the best case for the Vita to be a portable PS3 but it at least ensures that there will be notable new releases coming even if they arent exclusive.

I wonder if Nintendo is going to maintain the "Year of..." homage for next year, starring a different character to showcase. If so, any guesses for who it'll be in 2014?

I do actually wonder if (not counting the gamepad) the Wii u could actually be cheaper to manufacture than ps3 is

Well considering that Nintendo made losses last quarter it seems that either the console itself is rather expensive to manufacture or the gamepad is damn expensive. PS3 must be dirt cheap to manufacture. Especially with the new super slim.

I made this as a separate thread (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=537687), but I felt it was relevant here as well given the sales nature.

Kobayashi's main concern was that console owners in Japan would take one look at Dogma's visuals and dismiss it as yo-ge-a term (literally "Western game") often used derisively when talking about US-made games with dark, brooding backdrops, space marine-type characters, and tons of bloody violence.

"A lot of Western-made games have pretty dark atmospheres," he told Famitsu. "So to emphasize the fact that we were different with that, we pushed a lot of scenes [in the preview material] that showed characters fighting under a bright blue sky."

The initial approach that Capcom took to selling Dogma to Japan: Don't call it an RPG at all.

"Capcom decided to announce the title as an 'action game'," Famitsu wrote, "deliberately avoiding the term 'open world RPG'. This could be termed a very Capcom-like approach, given the great success they've had producing Monster Hunter and other games in the action genre. The idea was that gamers who hear that Capcom has a new action game coming out would immediately be more interested in hearing more about it."

This helped get the Dogma name out to the Japanese market during the initial press run in 2011. As the spring '12 release approached, though, another problem arose: The tactic was so successful that gamers began to think there were no RPG elements to the title at all. This was a problem, considering that (a) Dogma's an RPG, of course (b) Capcom's main target audience were male gamers in their thirties.

"With all the RPG lovers in Japan," Famitsu wrote, "this wasn't a problem they could ignore. So, as the release date drew near, Capcom switched tactics and touted the game's RPG-ness, talking about how it lets gamers explore a high-fantasy world. They launched a number of drives meant to appeal to the adult male audience, from enlisting J-pop band B'z for the opening theme to organizing a tie-in with the Berserk anime film and producing a novelette penned by Record of Lodoss War author Ryo Mizuno. This wave of effort, all meant to attract the eye of thirty-something gamers, helped Capcom attract both action and RPG fans with Dragon's Dogma, helping them sell 320,000 copies in the first week."

That was the quickest any original franchise sold this generation in Japan, a success that any publisher could be happy with. Yet, as Kobayashi put it, "I think we still have more room to sell this."
