Media Create Sales: Week 16, 2012 (Apr 16 - Apr 22)

25k number looks high for first day sales, Someone who has played the game must confirm if these users are unique or 2ch trolls again.

there's multiple people bringing it up so I'm assuming the numbers are correct. There is a guy that copied the help text regarding the numbers:

http://toro.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/handygame/1335460570/62

Like he says in the end the help text itself seems to be out of order and/or mistyped (all users: number of users that have sent HymP to the Micro Quasar up to this point; transmission count: number of times users have sent HymP to the Micro Quasar; sharl count: number of users that sent energy to Micro Quasar). The threads were packed with people as the server was experiencing issues all day (even now threads are going at 3000 res/24h, earlier it was approaching 20,000 res/24h -- to put that in perspective, they went through ~10 threads with 1,000 posts each in the last 24hrs), so it wouldn't surprise me if media + DD sales combined were that high.

The 'gaming blogs' (and to a certain extent, real gaming sites as well) have been pushing this really hard -- I won't visit them but have heard that Hachima & Jin115 probably have 100+ posts on the game combined -- so I don't think this is an unrealistic number.

It's looking more and more likely that the Vita's future is not too bright. Yes, yes it's been less than six months in, but for the sake of speculation: What should Sony have done instead?

- Made a PSP smartphone?
- Made another go at a revamped PSP with lessons they learned from Go?
- Exited the handheld portable market altogether?
- Invested more in developer relations for the Vita?

What does GAF think? I really have no answers as to a good way Sony could have handled this generation to be honest.

*This is for the Japanese market.

They should have released a handheld targeted at a price only moderately higher than the PSP price range, with updated processor/memory but not crazytown updated and backwards compatibility. Ditching the UMD was an okay idea, but they should have designed the system so that you could attach a (hopefully not too unergonomic) UMD reader to a dock/port in the back for playing PSP games. Also, not being larger than most pockets would have been nice. Figure… target $170 with the same loss margin that they're experiencing now at $250, and they would have a much healthier system right now. They might not win the generation, but Sony needs to realize that selling the most toys is less of a priority than aiming for profit.

Basically, the term I'm seeking is "PSP Advance".

edit: sorry, using dollar amounts and not yen, but you get the idea. :)

And released it before the 3ds

schuelma

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
And released it before the 3ds

This is really the only real answer. Vita had to be first, and it had to have time to build up goodwill with 3rd parties.

Once the 3DS was released first, it was always going to be an extremely difficult road for Sony.

I don't really believe the 25k numbers for Ciel no Surge, but if true it would be a massive success for Gust. From the video footage I've seen it really doesn't look like it was expensive to develop in any way, shape or form.

Either done a PSP+ (as you say learn from PSP Go), which allows for UMD's but enforces all new PSP games to be sold with a new Vita like card system. Also maybe slightly more power. Then later moving onto Vita fully.

Or alternatively a full on gaming tablet - honestly theres a market for that and I think its where Sony should go next.

Who would have bought a PSP+? I hear the idea tossed around pretty often, and feel there's even less likelihood of it selling than the current Vita iteration has. In the end it's definitely the games, but even then the hardware revamp needs to be able to convince people that things have changed. If something like this was viable I think we'd have seen more DSi-specific software.

Well it could be possible its not like vita owners have much else to buy

I wouldn't be so sure. 3rd parties are doing solid but probably not up to expectations overall. Just look at KH:DDD. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of devs just opt to go the mobile route.
Individual games haven't always lived up to expectations, but it's the overall where things shine.

It could be for some, but i'm not sure that it is a general thing. I dont think that many people will buy a game that they dont have any interest in just because there isnt much to buy. I would also expect to see more older Vita games to chart in this case.

How was it with the 3DS? Did the Top 500 2011 numbers show anything about nice growth for older 3DS games? It was the same situation with the 3DS in the begining ("it need more games!" etc.).

You're forgetting that this is Japan, the land where they've perfected the art of used game sales. 'Used' usually means the previous owner used tweezers to handle the game, wore rubber gloves while reading the manual, and any stickers binding the case was peeled off with masterful precision. Would not be surprised in the least if a lot of people have been just selling and then buying used the launch games.

As for interest in the game... like I said, there's been a ton of coverage as it's one of the few games that a pro-Vita site can push. Comgnet preorders were at 21pts for the limited edition so it's not like there wasn't any interest, either.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

DAYUM!

Never would've expected this! I'd imagine (hope) that Family Fishing is at least half that by now.

Hopefully they'll really build on this in a Wii U sequel.

The first 14 months of third party releases on 3DS can't be compared with any other handheld. 3DS got the expansion of a 4.7M selling game, sequels of two million or near million selling games and big KH and RE spinoffs.

The third party releases on the other handhelds in the first 14 months are a joke compared to that.

Good point, i actually forgot about used sales for a second.

About interest for a game, i do agree that if there is some interest for a game to begin with, and if there is few games to choose from, it can be likely that more people will pick a certain game. Maybe that is what frankie_baby mostly were referring to. I've done that myself with the Vita actually (only with smaller downloadable game though, i bought some that i might not have bought if the Vita game library was much bigger. I wont buy retail games for full price that i dont have much interest in).

How is the price on launch games now by the way? Both new copies and used.

It still seems to be going up at a fast pace though with MH down.
Looking at things like Metal Gear 3D's surprisingly alright sales (about double what many on here expected) it'd be interesting to look at the lower end of sales compared with other systems.

Ofc the big test is can anyone launch a new franchise? KI says it can be done (okay its a 'sequel' but its not its a new franchise) but can a third party?

so guys whats this week biggest release? RE:ORC or MP9?

Mario Party 9 is the biggest console release of this year. I don't think Dragon Quest X or Resident Evil 6 will sell more.

About its first week sales? I don't know. I see both selling almost the same (150k - 200k).

I think at worse DQX will outsell MP9 over time.

This is assuming that MP9 won't surpass 1M since Wii sales aren't the greatest and DQX doesn't bomb spectacularly.

Its been a long time since Wii was putting up decent numbers for MP9 to sell as well as its predecessor.

On second thought though, I guess MP9 will outsell it, but I think its highly possible the gap won't be that big, both games are a big if on how well it sells compared to their predecessors.

I think its best if SE dropped the sub fee for DQX since its the first MMO for the series and give it a sub fee for the next DQ MMO (not necessarily DQXI, since its pretty much guaranteed they'll wanna give the 3DS a more traditional DQ) depending on how well the fan base recieves it. Or they could have just named it DQ: insert subtitle, instead of giving it the DQX moniker, pretty big gamble by them. I suppose FFXI didn't tarnish the brand enough for them to worry.

Holy shit 500k.

DS Fire emblems have been over 50% of first week to lifetime ratio. Its only if we look at GBA and further back iterations where we see sub 50% ratios. Very good news.

Regarding Fire Emblem bundle:

- Media Create said nothing, so apparently not included.
- Dengeki said limited edition(s) is(are) included (outside of the 3DS bundle, I only know of the ebten special edition).
- Famitsu will provide their SKUs next Wednesday.

About its first week sales? I don't know. I see both selling almost the same (150k - 200k).
I think Mario Party 9's the only one with a decent chance at passing a million. Wii Party's still tracking high and Mario Sports Mix did extremely well a little over a year back, this is exactly the sort of game that Wii can still sell.

For the rest of the 500k+ club this year, I just see Dragon Quest X Online (Wii), Resident Evil 6 (PS3) and Just Dance Wii 2. If they make 2012 I can also see Metal Gear Rising (PS3) FF Versus XIII and NSMB Mii.

Sony should have waited for developpers to actually have some games ready before releasing the damn thing.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Thats not how it works, if they had released it even later the 3ds would be already the to-go system with an huge userbase lead. 3rd partys wouldnt wait till sony releases vita and just put their titles on 3DS.

So 3DS over the 100k mark and FE approaching 270k? That's an amazing result.

It really is an amazing result and makes the sales of KH and RE (to name the two other high profile 2012 releases) seem bad.

If I were Capcom or S-E I would be wondering what went wrong because the potential sales were higher (RE) and much, much higher (KH).

Are some people really not expecting dragon quest to hit a million? Sure it won't have those sort of numbers as long term subscribers but i think it will from people buying it and playing for a month or two, the free "kids" sessions should help too

If I were Capcom or S-E I would be wondering what went wrong because the potential sales were higher (RE) and much, much higher (KH).

I think Capcom should've pushed RE the same way they pushed Monster Hunter Tri G no need to over think or wonder.
