Nintendo would have been smart to include a download code for Pokemon AR searcher with every copy of Pokemon B/W2 (or have it pre-installed in a hardware bundle) Free additional content would have given the 3DS a bigger boost.

For those who thinks DQX will sell about 500k... DQ Collection last year was able to reach about 400k units.
It is a different type of game(s) though, classical RPG VS MMORPG. DQ Collection was also 4400 yen. DQX will be 6980 yen (or 8980 yen for the USB stick bundle). I have no idea how much DQX is going to sell, i just wanted to mention the difference between those releases :)

EDIT: Speaking of DQX, why is the two free hours every day only limited to kids? I guess the reason behind it is that kids have less money, so it is harder for them to pay for the monthly subscription. But it is not like there will be only kids who play at these two hours. There will probably be tons of paying customers at all ages who also play at these hours, so it is not like only kids will play together at these two hours.

It's not limited to kids, just aimed at them, afaik. They're not going to keep everyone else from playing during those two hours lol.

I think that the problem with X is not only the bill to be paid to play it, but also the structure derived by the MMO games.
The fact that you have to be online to play it, for example, but also the lack of deep characters for example

plus, the Wii is no more a beast in terms of popularity, especially for Jrpgs.

You really shouldn't compare DQ to other JRPGs. Expecting it to behave like any other JRPG is like expecting Mario to sell like any other platformer. DQ is a phenomenon that is close to Mario and Pokemon in terms of popularity. Expect DQX sales comparable to NSMBWii, in a relation similar to previous DQs vs. Marios on the same hardware.

As for strong characters, DQIII didn't have defined party members other than the hero. And the hero simply was a legendary hero, no further story to him. It didn't hurt it one bit.

As long as online doesn't cost you, the fact that you have to be online shouldn't be a problem.

Sure, i know that they wont keep everyone else out except the kids :) A bit poorly written by me, sorry. They (Square Enix) are following the honor system they say, so there wont be any checks in place to verify age or anything like that. But i was wondering why they aim/"limit" this offer to kids only. But in afterthought, i guess it is just to be nice towards the kids, since they in general have less money.

Well, I don't know. Mario Wii was also a perfect fit to the console's key points: first ever multiplayer episode of the franchise on the perfect console for family entertainment. And came out when Wii was much stronger than today.
Pluse, having to be connected online could be a problem, maybe small problem, but always a problem, compared to the normal way of play DQ.
Especially considering how the social aspect of the 9th episode did well, exploiting the portablle side of the game and the portable fever that hit Japan in the last few years: comparing the online community to the portability DQ9 had, could be a mistake for japanese market.

We'll see hot it will perform: me, I'm expecting a similar drop to the one that hit FFXI compared to the normal episode of that franchise.

I raised this issue a few threads before and seriously cannot understand how people keep lowballing their predictions for DQX. The times you state are pretty much what I expected and I don't see why it should sell *much* worse than DQVIII, even if it is an MMO.

I stand by my original statement that it will be a strong millionseller, possibly multimillion. And that's Wii alone, not talking about the Wii U version.

DQ8 sold 3.6 million copies in Japan. DQX is not getting anywhere close to that even if it reaches 2 millions.

We've been through the reasons for why that happened. None of them apply to DQX.

@saichi
Actually I don't really see why it should fall much under the usual 3~4 million. Outselling the original DQ is my most conservative guestimate, I really can't see it declining by much more than half. I think it's very much possible that it could live up to the usual sales.

Selling as bad as the collection or Swords, that's what *I* would consider impossible for a numbered entry to the series.

Kind of interesting how much Square is betting on two MMOs (XIV 2.0 and DQX) that both have major barriers to selling even more than usual for series that are turned MMO (Original XIV was terrible, Wii is not really alive at this point). Looks really difficult for Square right now...

O__O

Do you have numbers for MH guides?

I don't have ltd sales numbers, once the book has left the weekly top 30 there is no way to know how much it has sold.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd: Start Dash Book (5 weeks) - 360,326.
Monster Hunter 3G Great Trial Book (5 weeks) - 117,231.

"Kids time" makes me more confident in DQX sales and seems like a great solution for younger and more casual players. A million (on Wii) might not be so out of reach after all.

It also seems like it'd be a smart application for any western localization. I do sort of wonder if Nintendo & SE are planning to continue the western DQ partnership going? I'd really like Slime Morimori 3 and that DQI-III Collection at least.

I can't wait to see DQX predictions. The range is going to be insane.

I personally think it will sell much more than Swords but I still think over 3 millions is being overly optimistic. The kids hour is nice (but still rather limited) and the game doesn't have the same barriers that FFXI had, but it's still a mmo and a rather big departure from the usual DQ game.

Even though DQX's a MMO, structurally I'm not expecting that huge a difference from DQIX. I mean, there'll be a persistent world with other people running around it, but the game itself probably isn't going to be as big a leap from the source material as FFXI/XIV was.

I think Square is hoping DQX will give the MMO-genre a boost of popularity that will also benefit FFXIV indirectly. It's no coincidence that PS3 FFXIV finally gets a date, only months after DQX.

Although profitable in the end, FFXI's sales were a major shock to a series already in decline. Even though FFXIV could be very profitable just by repeating the scope of XI, I'm sure they're shooting for something way bigger.

As for Wii being alive or dead, when big titles come, they sell.

is it a lot cheaper to advertise in japan, compared to north america and europe?

i ask, because i see so many niche titles getting tv advertisement.

Well, I know certain Japanese TV stations air new programing really late at night (1-3AM) so I have to imagine that's when the niche stuff gets advertised. It's like how you'll see very random commercials for things at 3AM on a US network or something.

I'm wondering what'll be bigger: The 3DS bump due to this DS Pokemon title available in a couple of weeks, or the future 3DS bump for a future 3DS Pokemon title available some unknown time later.

I'd expect the latter to be larger due to the fact that a 3DS purchase is necessary for the latter - but that's potentially a long way off, while this one is here right now.
Probably the latter. My first instinct was to say that by the time a proper 3DS Pokémon shows up that demographic would already be there, buuut I see that even in 2010 Black/White could still bump the original DS, even with the LTD over 30 million.

Some entries more than others, but DQ doesn't seem like a series with generally deep characters.

Wonder if we'll finally get a 100k+ start for the Vita.

Edit: Actually, P3P started with a little over 100k on the PSP, it'd be "amazing" if P4G could reach that...

Lack of deep characters??? Must not have played FF11 to be able to say something like that. It's easy to take potshots at the grind or the awful system Ito, Kawabuta and the other useless members of the development team laid out, but there was never a shortage of intriguing scenarios and character development.

Well, I don't know. Mario Wii was also a perfect fit to the console's key points: first ever multiplayer episode of the franchise on the perfect console for family entertainment. And came out when Wii was much stronger than today.

Don't forget that they've already announced some sort of 3DS streetpass app that runs alongside DQX is in the works. Quite frankly Enix is by far doing the best job at exploiting streetpass in their games (either Konno or Miyamoto's been quoted noting Dragon Quest IX's streetpass craze as the kind of hit they wanted to achieve), and it's hard for me to imagine them not exploiting this with DQX.

There are four different guide for Tri G? Why >.>

Competing publishers wanting in on the same pot. Or publishers trying to double dip. You think this is bad, go check out how many versions of FF11 guides there are out there by every publisher.

So Tokyo Jungle's sell through is apparently 87.47%... Wow. I have to wonder how the PSN figures look.

Gundam Vita did a 68.26% sell through.

P3P didn't have a 26 episode TV show and a movie leading up to its release.
