The reason i refrained from bringing up the home console component of the NX was because the thread is Japan oriented. For Nintendo to make any strides in this segment of the market over there it would need a device that gathers the same amount of ineterest as the Wii.

Something Wii like for the home console becomes even harder when one considers that PSVR will be available this october. VR it is something that can awake interest in the home console market since it offers something the mobile devices are yet to offer with that degree of fidelity.

The handheld busyness is their strong point. The stripped down version of a Nintendo handheld for use with an Smartphone would be a chance to get part of that segment interested in Nintendo more traditional games. It's less intrusive than carrying a dedicated handheld device and it would be a cheaper way for people to get into their system.

With a handheld and dedicated home console, the simplified handheld for smartphones could become in reality their third pillar they often talk about.

I brought up this idea of mine in another thread, I'll repost it:

The portable is the phone shown above, only it's everything but a phone, with a game card slot.

Instead of it being physically stuck with a controller, it's in two pieces. This allows folks to easily take the base device with them with ease in their pockets and whatnot as they would any smartphone, and there would be a lot of touch games for folks to play without the need for the controller. But traditional games would require it, and the controller would always be in the box for 100% attach rate so devs don't have to worry about folks not having one.

The big deal also is; that could also be the NX console controller (see the closed position pic).

And also be a smartphone controller for those that want to use it that way.

This could be outstanding if done right.

For the record, Busters prediction was < 650K i believe? and then it sold a bit more than that (693K)

Just wondering, why would it matter that it is the third release on one platform? Isnt the comparison about how the games are selling in the current market? I also dont think that theres are a lot of Taiko fans that doesnt own a 3DS, or does the Taiko franchise has a history of surging in sales when being released on a new platform?

Yeah, me too. I can see a slightly decrease from the second entry but cracking 800k on first week shouldn't be hard for Hino's franchise, 850k including digital sales would be good enough in my opinion.

We are talking about different things. What you posted would be another take on a dedicated handheld device.

What i suggest is NIntendo keeps their dedicated devices and additionally make a DS/GBA Smartphone attachment in a very compact form factor. Basically the attachment adds a standard NIntendo control setup, base handheld hardware and a card slot to the mobile device. The screen, IMUs, Wifi, Speakers among other features are from the Smartphone itself.

It would be a cheaper stripped down version of their handheld that would be more likely for a Smartphone user to carry around. i think the important part of the problem NIntendo faces is how to make people care/carry a dedicted gaming device. This would be a half way solution at least, and alternative to them downright making a gaming Smartphone or partnering with a big stablished manufacturer to do one.

Nintendo Mobile games will probably kill the remainder of the console industry over the next few years altogether. Eventually a Nintendo handheld will just be a Nintendo-produced tablet with built-in controls, depending on what rumours you believe they might already be moving in that direction.

Pokemon Go is going to wonders for drawing people back in for the mainline series, especially if they push a good advertising campaign and a price drop around the same time.

Its gotten Pokemon on top of people's mind all over the world again. Obviously it won't draw in everyone, probably going to struggle to even affect 10% of the extended, mobile casual audience, but that's still a huge number of people. And I think this (as well as probably what we'll see from AC and FE) are going to be what underline the plans Nintendo has going forward. Parallel experiences that serve to compliment each other in function and popularity.

Its also important to note that Niantic/TPC/Nintendo didn't try to just cram Pokemon onto mobile, they made an experience that was built around the ubiquity of mobile and its functions. This is a good thing. Also the monetization in as of so far is really lax to the point where I have yet to feel even the slightest need to do anything with it, the RNG is highly limited and even the dumbest of Ratattas can become a good pokemon.

Also I'd be curious to hear Nirolak's opinion on a strategy of this sort, or if its even feasible (and if not, how far into the clouds my head has risen on all the Helium I've inhaled in my lab!).

In the short term I'd say its absolutely possible to leverage mobile popularity on dedicated devices. I'd point to Puzzle and Dragons Z, Monster Strike and even Angry Birds as examples on the 3DS. It probably doesn't work in the long term(see P&D Mario and probably the upcoming P&DX).

I think the problem I'd note there is that P&D leveraged the game in its entirety, effectively, with little to serve as any sort of differentiator. That will work in the short term off of the popularity of the brand but long-term there's no reason to play a dedicated version over the mobile version (which gets updated regularly). P&DZ and P&DMario did it the wrong way, imo, which was to leverage the brand slapped over identical mechanics that did nothing to take advantage of the hardware over just a phone.

Pokemon GO and Pokemon S&M are very different products, centered on different things, and the latter is considerably more complex and has a highly competitive arm. The former is about going out, exploring, and chasing down Pokemon in a very simple game with simple and straight forward mechanics. Harlequin made mention of this in the thread on GO's grossing performance, and how many (here, and denoting the disconnect between GAF and the larger audience of gaming on mobile and such) were wanting non-casual, core aspects added to GO and in affect missing the entire point and attraction of GO in its simplicity.

Pokemon on the 3DS is a very different animal from Pokemon GO, and they serve different market interests. This is why I am going to be curious to see if GO has a positive and long term good affect on the brand in the dedicated games. The brand in and of itself has been more than the games for a long, long time anyway. GO is yet another extension of the brand. I don't think GO will harm the core games any more than the TCG harmed them or the anime or the movies or the spin-offs. If its handled well, they'd all work off of one another to promote the other as has been very common in the cross-media and cross-promotional nature of Pokemon.

COMG's been getting smaller, and the audience has been dwindling. Haruhe has been saying this very frequently that COMG is not representative of other regions with YW3 was doing better.

Well, hopefully Yokai is being underestimated again. Time for the true test on how powerful this still is.

Hm, what would happen if Pokemon GO was released the same day Yoaki 3 came out? Now that could be fun to watch.

With Steins;Gate 0 and Root Letter selling so closely on PS4/Vita, I wonder why COMG is showing Hayarigami miles ahead on Vita. Wonder if that'll translate to reality.

Coven still hanging around, good for it, WoM has really helped this one.

Pre-orders for PKM Sun / Moon start the same day that Yo-kai Watch 3 comes out. It wouldn't be strange if Pokemon GO also launches this day as well. (The new Pokemon movie is also that day if I'm not mistaken).

Level5 probably wants to control its merchandising and has its own brand already with YW to market off of.

MonHun doesn't have that, and riding on the coattails of the popularity of amiibo and their appeal to a wide array of gamers/collectors is more logical.

I don't know, if NX home console manage to sell around 5M HW LTD in Japan, it could be a small success considering the market. The only issue would be third party support as usual, since first party has been shown to still be successful despite the WiiU being a failure.
I don't think the Nintendo handheld market in Japan is at a point where they need to chase smartphones. They need this audience, sure, but will do it via compatibility and other stuff rather than going some weird way like you're saying. It wouldn't make that much sense for them, and honestly sounds like the weird ideas they got for Vita (like putting a 3G/mobile option in). Nintendo handhelds aren't that big or problematic, especially in Japan.

Well, YSO prediction for YW3 is even lower than expect. Personally i expected ~800K First week, we will See.

That Said... This can't be unexpected. Seriusly, even with The best ratio Points ever, those COMG pre orders were a pretty much obvius indication.

Dentsu & Bamco have iron grip on YW merchandising (that's the main reason that got so much popular in Japan anyway) so it's not like L5 can ignore them.

I already know Go is going to totally distract the Japanese gaming community, knowing YW3, I am really worried. But also kind of glad Go hasn't released in Japan yet.

I don't like ads myself, but if Nintendo should market their other games, they should do it in Go via ads if they want people interested in their other games.

I personally see Go as too much of a distraction for other people to actually care about Nintendo's other franchises or third party games that Nintendo helps with like YW. Other franchises need notable exposure somehow.

It's very important to note that COMG! points are very useful but as I commented the other day the amount of young people in Niigata is even lower than Tokyo. Another place where I heard Yo-Kai is doing quite well is in Nagoya. There are some store where Jibanyan has big presence.

Well, I continue going with more than 800k but less than 850k. The Sushi / Tempura Set is not counted on COMG! and I think there is a good amount of people thinking about picking the two versions.

Yes, one is from the bundle. I can't expect Splatoon being third, but a good increase is very likely to happen.

Busters sold more than YSO predictions, so yes 800,000 is still a fair guess... could be really something between 650-900K.

So, at #16 we have Splatoon normal SKUs (which is also increased by... FIVE position o_O and with 6 new release) and at #3 Splatoon Wii U bundle.

...Well, that's seem a quite good sign.

8-10K for Splatoon was my guess for this week, could be possible more? (like 10K to 15K)

Both pre-orders and movie are out on the same day as YW 3, yeah.

I doubt Pokémon GO will release on the same day . International launch was delayed due to the servers being hammered to hell, I'm sure it would have already been released in Japan already if not for that.
