Also, I want to point out there's a major distinction between a financial flop (which this isn't) and a notably disappointing performance (which this absolutely is).
It's not good news for the company, which before had way more revenue from retail Yo-Kai Watch games coming in. Level 5 seems to be aggressively trying to make new franchises and revive old ones in response to this (or in prediction of this scenario) however.

Judging by the YSO predictions, YW3's second week will be lower than YW2's second week as well. The "It was only on sale for X days" narrative only works when a game actually closes the gap in week 2, instead it's likely that YW3 will fall further behind. It also ignores that most games have a sharp drop after day 1.
Last year OR/AS was called a disappointment because of the legs it showed and YW would kill Pokemon when it broke Pokemon records entry after entry.
Apparently if you could see further than next day you knew this wouldn't last but I'd give some time waiting for the legs it will show (next months, not next week) and see how close or far YW3 will end comparing to YW2 before calling YW dead already.

Yeah, it'll still make its money back and more, but this is definitely the biggest sign yet that the franchise is going to end up like every other Level 5 franchise. I wonder how many more profitable entries they can push out before completely killing the series.
I don't think is fair say that Yokai Watch is death, indeed.
And if someone think it, i think they should at least understand that there are still strong possible for Yokai Watch 3 to be a >2 million seller, if you count digital. All considering this could be a badly -37% compared to Yokai Watch 2, but not THAT terrible as it looks like now.
I think is fair to say the series is not as strong as it was one time.
That said, i believe Yokai Watch 4 gonna be a 1-1.5 million seller, and should be a stable point for the series, imo.

Considering Senran Kagura was a hyper-niche new IP that seemed to have zero breakout appeal that then proceeded to breakout, I think Marvelous is hoping for lightning to strike twice.

There's still nothing really great available, despite people wanting the hardware. It seems more like a "per default" choice though for home consoles, since WiiU is dead and has not third party support (and lol X1).
People probably buy a lot of games used on this one, wonder if we have some stats on this.
thanks I was not keeping track on what came out for PS4 I just saw 8 on the top 30 list and wondered why they are not higher since the hardware base is there to support them

Hahaha, it took far too long for this comment to appear. Pretty much every time without fail.
I wouldn't even say this had zero appeal. They took a gameplay formula which seemed to work (Kenka Bancho, even managing to snag the original devs) and a design that seemed to work (Takak's brand of fanservice) and mashed them together. Sure fire hit, right?
Well, no, because they seemed to botch everything about it. Reception to the demo was lukewarm due to sluggish combat. Game wasn't really fanservicey enough for the audience they were targeting, but seemed too heavy on with the stuff for your average audience.
And aside from that, it just seemed to have a general lack of budget pushed into it. The Kenka Bancho games were notably open-world, this wasn't. Despite being arena-based, it doesn't even really seem as graphically impressive as Valkyrie Drive.
I kinda feel that's the problem with all these niche new IP's. Spike Chunsoft are absolutely guilty of it too. Create a 'spiritual successor', often using a dev or person linked to the original brand, yet give it a shoestring budget and hope for the best. Examples - Exist Archive; Grand Kingdom; Uppers etc. It never seems to work and I'm honestly baffled why they keep trying.
(Except from a personal PoV, because I absolutely love that we're getting these types of games
)I'm guessing that Hino and higher ups were totally aware that franchise is done. They'd rather ship the YW3 as much as they can for final cash grab than invest to keep the franchise alive.
But everything else is cheap. I think they are doing just fine. VA might not be that expensive too. After all they are not really going for a five star cast.
Actually they are getting bigger and bigger VA talent. Cold Steel/Sen has big names.
And they are also the best selling entries. I think Falcom is on an upward spiral here. Bigger budget for big VAs -> brings in more money for their next title.
I've read that charges users pay to VA studios are roughly proportional to actors' age not their popularity (not saying popularity is never considered though).
If I had to guess, these voice acting agencies MUST offer package deals, or pay their VAs like crap, for them to get so many high profile VAs in usage.
Look at a niche game like ZTD and it has an all-star voice cast with tons of lines, Sugita, Sawashiro, Ishida, etc. Or fighting games with huge amounts of voiced story done by prolific voice actors. It's something that's always continuously surprised me.

I don't think that Level-5 mismanaged the Yo-kai Watch franchise, but maybe they should have released more spin-offs and less main games.
Pokémon had a lot of spin-offs in the first few years (Stadium, Snap, Pinball), but few main games.

I could be wrong, but don't they have some merchandising tie-ins for every Evo game released? Could have sworn it was some sort of deal like that where they have Drama CDs, Arrange Soundtrack CDs, various character goods, etc. Given the partners involved in the project I wouldn't be surprised if the game releases themselves are just meant to break even and raise awareness to push the other stuff which have a higher margin for the respective companies involved.
Maybe Pokemon Go will get people meeting more often? After everything else it's done I wouldn't be shocked.
I can be totally wrong, but I heard the problem is famiies don't want kids, not people don't want to get married. Doubt Pokemon Go will change that.

Pokemon Go is not gonna changing japanese behaviour, handhelds became popular cause people can use them while commuting. Pokemon Go requires you have to move from a location to another, something that's not possible for busy people with no free time

But it is true. The overwhelming majority of tentpole releases run well. There are exceptions to every rule, but I don't think I need to list all the major games that never dip below 30 fps, even with 3D on. Besides, with Pokemon being, like, half a Nintendo IP, the comparison with other first-party games is even less flattering. Nintendo is the kind of company that, nowadays, usually either shoots for 60 fps or a locked frame rate. Rare are the Nintendo games dipping below 30 fps, and they all have 3D.
Give credit where credit is due. Game Freak is being shown up by Level-5.
