I'm crazy for not wanting a 3DS monopoly?

And Hatsune Miku has already been announced for Vita. More might follow.

Porting from Vita to 3DS, or vice versa, isn't anything like porting from PS3 to 360, or vice versa.

Miku's a bad choice, since the Vita game likely isn't a port of Project Mirai, but rather a new Project Diva.

Before the betrayalthon, I joked around saying Capcom would pull that stunt with MH. Having the cutesy Crystal Chronicles-esque series on Nintendo platforms, where as keeping the major series for Sony. Obviously that was wrong.

Pokemon's never really had as many similar big games in such a period like Monster Hunter. 2009 saw Tri, 2010 saw P3rd, 2011 sees TriG, and 2012 sees MH4? Uh... Yes, those games are all on different platforms, but they're all part of the same very similar series. I definitely feel as though Capcom's eventually going to see declines due to the sheer amount of MH games.

I expect MH4 for spring 2013 WiiU/3DS.
Next year we will probably have a Poka Poka title for 3DS and Tri G should keep on sellin in 2012.

That game also crossed my mind a few minutes ago. It really looks like next year 3DS will see a constant support.

BurntPork said:
Exactly. The Vita version will almost always be definitive.
That's why it most probably won't get a lot of ports. They need to invest a lot in making the game look much better than 3DS version, but the chances of it selling enough to justify it is based on risk.

There happened to be some ports from Wii to HD consoles that sold better there, but most of the times they just sold worse. And Wii had a severely fucked up market for a lot of core genres to begin with.

I definitely feel as though Capcom's eventually going to see declines due to the sheer amount of MH games.
It actually yet has to caught up with Call of Duty, as its not getting its share of DLCs and Map Packs yet. Online(local online in Japan, lol) and competitive games don't lost their appeal this easily, in fact they need continuous releases to keep the hungry installed base fed.

Can you name some? Graces, No More Heroes, Rune Factory, Sengoku Basara, etc. all sold better on PS3 than they did on Wii (though the last 2 were simultaneous releases). I think one of the many Samurai Warriors games might fall into that, but I really can't think of anything else.

Eventually things do pop in favour of other things. I know people say this every year, but this is likely either the first year CoD suffers decline, or the last year it grows. There's apathy growing for that franchise in part due to the annual releases, but largely due to Activision's questionable choices. Which of course Capcom does take part of in times (though outside of the expansion packs, rarely with Monster Hunter).

I am talking about WW numbers. I am curious about your etc though, are there any other games?

Also as I said, Wii isn't really marketable as long as core gamers go; DS wasn't and 3DS doesn't seem so as its getting a lot of important 3rd party core games.

This year CoD is going off against BF3, I don't see any similar competition facing MH in any near future, maybe Demon's Souls in some other years.

Twas 2006/2007 PSP sales dropped. Average about 36k a month. Even with those numbers, it never was as bad as the Wiis worst. The PSP worse year (excluding launch of course) has the numbers at 1.8 million. Last years the wii was around 1.7 and the sales this year look even lower than that.
The success or failure of a system isn't based only on hardware sales. First years of PSP in Japan were very bad.

No you're crazy for thinking half of these titles will be ported to the vita, most titles from third parties could be multi between then from now on, but to say it with the confidence you're showing is pretty crazy. Iwata has probably made these deals with third parties to get these games in the first place, they're not going to moneyhat just to see it get ported.

Takao said:
Has there ever been a yearly franchise that hasn't experienced some sort of sustained decline? I'm a fan of a series that once was one of the largest third party franchises on GameBoy, but evaporated in to nothing over a few years due to annual releases. This year will be the first for MH decline, since I doubt TriG can outdo P3rd just due to userbases.
We're talking bout Capcom here, they're kings of milking, they'll milk shitty selling franchises let alone something like MH.

Ah, but this is the Media Create thread, you must specify when you're talking about worldwide things! :p

As for the etc. I only put that there because I couldn't think of any other Wii to PS3, or "This is obviously a Wii port on PS3 even though they're being released at the same time" games, haha.

Phantasy Star, and God Eater both compete for that space. Though both SEGA and Scamco are happy about milking those series too.

Last time they milked something so hard resulted in the death of the fighting game genre, didn't it? Though, that's not the best comparison for a handheld series given that genre's death in the west had to do with the decline of arcades as well.

Yeah and they're doing the same thing again with their fighting games. Its an endless cycle.

well, I don't think they can pose any serious threat to MH anytime soon.

Though, I believe, if Capcom doesn't make a major MH game on the home consoles for next two years, From Software can become a threat there. However, most probably they will do so for either Wii U or PS3, depending on how they perform.

I'm happy to see the sales for Ao no Kiseki are very good, and that both Graces and the DQ collection did well. Shows that RPGs are healthy as ever in Japan, was worried that a lot of RPG fans moved on to MH-style games.

428 did worse on PS3 (and PSP actually). Can't think of much else, though there really haven't been all that many Wii to PS3 ports.

For simultaneous multiplatform, Sonic World Adventure did better on Wii than PS3.

First day reports from retailers.

Winning Eleven very strong, stronger that last year's entry, could face supply problems this weekend, first week bigger than 200K most likely.

AKB1/48 doesn't seem to have such a strong start as the original, weekend may change that.

japan won the asia cup this year. i think football got a nice boost because of thi. the cover even features a japanese player (kagawa) and not ronaldo like in europe. that was not the case in the last years.

plus, the game improved a lot.

Even through FFIII remake sold 1m on NDS last gen, I think most would agree that PSP was the stronger "Final Fantasy" system with Crisis Core (FFVII prequel) and Dissidia (Final Fantasy fanservice fighter) on it, and Tales did pretty decently there.
I don't know. I'd be hard-pressed to find a series that's more evenly matched on DS and PSP than Final Fantasy. DS has the slight total sales advantage, and looking at the most successful games between the two the order looks to start DS, PSP, PSP, DS, DS, PSP, DS.

The GBC tech upgrade is absolutely identical to the DSi.

GBC = double the CPU speed of the original GB and 4X the RAM
DSi = double the CPU speed of the original DS (ARM 9 was doubled, ARM 7 is the same though) and 4X the RAM

Both consoles also had the same cartridge release structure. You have your original GB/DS cartridges that work on all machines, you have hybrid carts that take advantage of some of the GBC/DSi's capabilities and then you have GBC/DSi exclusive games that take full advantage of the hardware.

Both consoles also had a set of gimmicks that seperated it from their original counterparts (GBC = Colour + InfraRed) (DSi = Camera + SD Card slot + DSiWare)

They're a perfect match for each other. Their lifespans are even almost identical (GBC = 1998-2000, DSi = 2009-2011)
Well, the GBC actually was 1998-2002 in the US, 2003 in Japan (and the GBA was released in 2001, not 2000). We'll see how long DSiWare games keep being released for though, it'll probably be next year sometime I assume but we'll have to see.

Apart from that, while you are right that there are a lot of similarities between the two, as I also said, I do think that the differences matter, and show how Nintendo has not treated the DSi like a new GBC even though it really is. Most obviously, of course, is that almost all games released on cards are not DSi titles. The GBC, in comparison, almost immediately entirely replaced the GB, and almost all GB games from late 1998 on are either dual-mode (with both color and B&W modes) or color only. After the first year, most games were color only instead of being dual mode, which was more common earlier on.

Of course, however, the DSi does have that big download-only library of exclusives, and based on power it's clearly about as big of an upgrade as the GBC was, though I would say that the addition of color is probably more significant than anything the DS adds, I guess "color" vs. "downloadable games" is an argument that you could make.

So yeah, Nintendo was pretty smart to not market the DSi like a new console, because if they had a lot of people would be pretty unhappy now that it's already dying thanks to the 3DS being released only two years after it was.

Do you have any guess on what the top 10 will look like with Monster Hunter, Mario Kart, Mario Land, Final Fantasy, Inazuma, + Vita Launch? (I might be missing a few)

Everything we've seen for the Green 3DS so far has been super-duper fake, so I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

I think we can a trend here, releasing varied colors and bundles, offer much value and choice to consumers, i think Nintendo learned that from PSP.

Half of the top 20 will be 3DS games on week 50. Calling it now.

It'll be 2005 all over again almost, and 3DS will be on top every week except the Vita launch, followed my PSP, then PS3, then Wii.

Do we know anything about supposed launch supplies? I mean, Sony didn't exactly stress any shelves with their last few launches.

No idea yet. This is the most they've said, but they don't put a timeframe on the figures.

While Kawano did not give Famitsu a precise number for the system's shipments, he previously told Reuters that he expects the first 500,000 systems to sell out quickly. The first 500,000 3G models include 100 hours of free 3G usage (see this story for more from Kawano's conversation with Reuters following Tokyo Game Show).

http://andriasang.com/comycb/

Curious to see what the split will be between the Wi-Fi and 3G model, too.

Probably the former, although they got plenty of money, and the group has plenty of fuel left (their last single became the first single to sell more than a million units on release day in Japan history, for example) . But year's end will be harsh on wotas: during October there will be NMB48's 2nd single on the 19th and AKB48's 23rd single on the 25th. Then November comes with virtually one single per week: SKE48's 7th single on the 9th, Not yet's 3rd single on the 16th, French Kiss's 4th single on the 23rd and Maeda Atsuko's second single (the face of AKB48) on the 30th, same day as Watarirouka Hashiritai's 7th single. And then on December 7 AKB48's 24th single.

Now consider that every single comes in three editions, A, B and C with random pictures, and that the AKB48 singles got also Theater versions that must be bought in quantity to get some chance of getting handshake tickets... it is a miracle they are buying the game at all :p

It'll be 2005 all over again almost, and 3DS will be on top every week except the Vita launch, followed my PSP, then PS3, then Wii.

depends on supply levels but would be quite shockingly spectacular if 3ds beats vita in its launch week

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

It also depends on Vita's debut.
If Vita debuts at something like...3DS debut or even more (375-400k), then 3DS could beat, but there wouldn't be certainties.
Instead, if it debuts like PSP did (200k), or at least under 300k, I could see 3DS beat it well.

@Burntpork: There's a certain Inazuma Eleven Go

Do we know if anything big comes out for 3DS that week?
The closest big things are IE:Go, 15th, Tri G 10th. PSV will get out on 20th; but since as we get closer to the Christmas, the sales increase, I wouldn't be surprised if 3DS beats it at all. GGeneration is also released on 22nd, but I don't know how big it is at all.

Vita comes out on the 17th.

What's the history of decline between MH first weeks and second weeks like?

It varies.

MHP2: 746,313 / 156,666
MHP2G: 823,265 / 552,701
MHP3: 2,146,467 / 514,198

Because of where the LTD of the 3DS is at, and since it's the first Monster Hunter on the system, I'm expecting it to perform much like MHP2 did. But it could depend a lot on the size of the initial shipment and how much that meets demand.

Hm. Even if it doesn't beat Vita that week, its sales for the previous week might be higher than Vita's launch week sales. Nintendo really locked this one up. Such a shame they ignored Wii to do so. -_-
