Late to this one, but it would probably help if retailers actually displayed lower profile software - the reports on these threads seem to suggest that the "big three" are getting the lion's share of shelfspace.
The fact is that we've seen various 3DS third party software doing well. Not only at launch.
Totals through Famitsu datas thanks to Gamedatamuseum
[3DS] One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP (Bandai Namco) - 76.578 / 189.857 / 40,33% 26/05/11
This will probably be over 200k when December is done...very good for being a compilation of the 2 UC with Marineford as bonus
[3DS] Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (Capcom) - 61.306 / 118.117 / 51,90% 02/06/11
120-130k at Christmas are possible, and it could sell something more.
[3DS] Senran Kagura (Marvelous Entertainment) - 53.951 / 61.139 / 88,24% 22/09/11
A surprise. Chris even reported people actually bought 3DS for it. Considering the kind of title it is, it did great.
[3DS] Nicola Kanshuu: Model Oshare Audition 2 (Alchemist) - 6.467 / 6.467 / 100,00% 03/11/11
Week of 3D Land, it debuted 11k less than the prequel, but I think it's obvious since the prequel was released in 2010, on DS. And then, it sold 104k as LTD.
[3DS] Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 3 (Square Enix) - 45.529 / 80.585 / 56,50% 02/11/11
This should have legs and legs, and it already started demonstrating them, at least for Famitsu
Then we have things such as Shin Chan debuting at 36 for MC
[NDS] Crayon Shin-Chan: Arashi no Yobu - Nutte Crayon Daisakusen! (Banpresto) - 30.648 / 131.696 / 23,27% 21/03/07
[NDS] Crayon Shin-Chan: Arashi no Yobu - Cinema Land DS (Banpresto) - 28.635 / 121.526 / 23,56% 20/03/08
[NDS] Crayon Shin-Chan: Obaka Daininden - Susume! Kasukabe Ninja Tai! (Bandai Namco) - 14.120 / 74.181 / 19,03% 18/03/10
[NDS] Crayon Shin-Chan: Arashi no Yobu - Nendororo n Daihenshin! (Bandai Namco) - 13.864 / 68.806 / 20,15% 19/03/09
[NDS] Crayon Shin-Chan: Shokkugan! Densetsu o Yobu Omake Daiketsusen!! (Bandai Namco) - 10.038 / 44.889 / 22,36% 02/12/10
The last one debuted with 10k, and while this probably did half as that, it'll have better legs.
Or Sonic debuting at 48, better than the 360 version (...and this underlines how much is dead software wise 360, but still )
I included also those first two since technically they can be considered low profile software...
But, there have been other games not even doing top 50: the Kunio-Kun remake, or Shinobi, or... PES 2012.
Yeah, there's a problem about very little software releases (...and PES 2012 ), and it's obvious that the big three are playing a role in this. I still see in the Famitsu database done by Chris and which I update almost constantly that DS, in these times in 2005, had the double of titles in top30, not even counting top 50.
Maybe, it's due to the much much stronger competition, since at those time, apart from PS2, there were a PSP with only MHP, while now 3DS titles have to "fight" against PSP games, PS3 releases and the Wii evergreen...and the big three. So, they're much more ignored for this.
However, I hope lower profile titles, as already happened on the platform with various results, find a space in the 3DS software universe; I hope to see the little games selling even surprising who made them...this should happen from January, when the big three will lower their sales, and there will be much more audience on the platform...and while it's crowded of notable releases, they're not as monstrous as MH, MK and 3D Land.
