Media Create Sales: Week 50, 2011 (Dec 12 - Dec 18)

Pretty insane.

The real issue would probably be creating a fully 3rd person 3D worldmap.

Depending on the size of VersusXIII's map, maybe they could steal the assets and create it using that.

I don't think that's a particularly big problem. Just look at Ni no Kuni.

Yeah, certainly the question of if they can make it and how well they could make a game of that nature is valid. I just feel like at the rate they're going now with the Final Fantasy franchise they're almost at the rock bottom point. I would say they could brandish it with some other subtitle instead of giving it a mainline number but I feel a good portion of the decline in the brand name is because they've released too much stuff this generation. I feel like the Final Fantasy name used to mean a lot because you only saw it a few times a generation so when the games did come out it was special. But you look at this generation and we've had so much Final Fantasy shoved down our throats that it's exhausting to keep up with.

Weren't there rumors that they outsourced a Final Fantasy project to a western studio but decided to cancel it? Could've sworn we saw some art assets or concept art from it.

I feel another major issue here is that not only have they released a lot of games, but they also haven't done much to ensure quality across their releases.

I mean, let's compare their Final Fantasy output based on Metacritic ratings from the previous two generations and this generation. This was everything I could find, so if people see something else, please feel free to mention it.

Code:
(Excludes ports, remakes, expansion packs, and DLC. Based on the platform with the most reviews for the few multiplatform titles.)

Current Generation Mainline/Numbered Titles:

83: Final Fantasy XIII
49: Final Fantasy XIV Online

Current Generation Spin-Offs:

83: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
81: Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
80: Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
80: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King
79: Dissidia: Final Fantasy
78: Dissidia 012 [Duodecim]: Final Fantasy
77: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring Of Fate
76: Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon
75: Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales
75: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
73: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord
71: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes Of Light
69: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
66: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers

Previous Generation Mainline/Numbered Titles:

94: Final Fantasy IX
92: Final Fantasy XII
92: Final Fantasy X
92: Final Fantasy VII
90: Final Fantasy VIII
85: Final Fantasy XI Online
85: Final Fantasy X-2

Previous Generation Spin-Offs:

87: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
83: Final Fantasy Tactics
80: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
57: Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII

These days, the brand has become so diluted that mentioning a Final Fantasy title is going to be announced no longer makes consumers assume that it will be a high quality product that they can safely go out and buy, or that it is even a title they should be interested in finding out more about.

Looking at their recent output, the most logical assumption to make would actually be that it will be something that is either only above average, disappointing, or straight out bad, which is the last association you want people to have with you brand.

I don't think that's a particularly big problem. Just look at Ni no Kuni.

Does Ni no Kuni have as many locations and towns as Final Fantasy VII? It'd be nice to know that. Is Ni no Kuni worldmap as big as the one in Final Fantasy VII? It is also worth noticing that Ni no Kuni uses a cartoon-style, while the hypothetic remake will have to use a realistic graphics, at least for the environment.

Screenshots, screenshots.

No one commenting the PSV and 3DS datas I reported? :(

The only thing interesting about Famitsu's numbers this week is how they were again distant from Dengeki and Media Create: FFXIII-2 - 606k.

It's a smaller relative difference than MinGol6, but 80k is a lot of copies.

MGS: Snake Eater 3D will have an hardware bundle.

This game does not need or deserve a hardware bundle... oh well.

Btw the img in the link isn't for the hw bundle afaik, they're just stickers sold by Hori.

Gundam 3DS started pretty low. Below IE's second week? Ouch.

And IE Wii is even lower. lol

Keep in mind we're in the biggest week of the year, even the 10th entry is likely to have done decently. Also IE strikers is an expansion to a game that sold ~200k... I don't know what you expected... I thought it would do much worse.

And SD gundam start isn't that bad considering the circumstances.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

We can assume a top 10 with 60-70k at least?
In that case, a very good second week for IE Go, thanks also to 3DS going into the Heavens.

Just Dance better than FFXIII-2. Shit happens.

I don't know much about IE. :/ lol. I have no idea what I'm talking about. :p

Half of the top 10 is 3DS. Wow.

Number 10 last year was 78k, so yeah.

Unless sales this year were uncharacteristically concentrated in the top few titles.

Monster hunter 3G still high, just below Super Mario land 3D, although I was expecting it to fare a little better it's still a positive outcome for both Capcom and Nintendo.

And Xtreme 2012 is an expansion of a game that barely sold how many copies? 200k? So a 100k LTD seems legit for me. This to avoid the L-5 bomba train.

Out of all the Level-5 games this season I really didn't expect IE Strikers to be the only one that didn't underperform heh.

Goes back to HD development on FFXIII being so long that they had to throw out a ton of cheap spin-offs to recoup the cost and they also have to milk the brand on other platforms. They really should have gave the Wii or DS something that isn't a shitty spinoff or port or remake or non-traditional rpg.

And especially, who would have expected that from...the Wii, at this point of its life? O_O

I´m looking forward to see how the Vita games ranked. The estimations for some of the early 2012 Vita games were probably too optimistic.

FF13-2 took a nosedive, SQEX can´t be too happy about this.

Good performance for Kirby, do you remember how it was labelled a bomb a few weeks ago?

Well those people most likely didn't know anything about Kirby's strength during the holidays. Heck, just last year people said Epic Yarn was a bomb too.

Kirby games always get good legs during the holidays

No? You confuse it with Epic Yarn.

No, I don´t. I remember that Epic Yarn was called a bomb as well last year at first, but even after it´s comeback for the holiday season, there were still some people calling Return to Dream Land a bomb because it looked like to sell significantely less than Epic Yarn.

Kirby had almost 400K last week alone in Japan, this week probably pushed it almost to 500K. Kirby is doing excellently and is tracking ahead of Epic Yarn at this rate.

Which is well-deserved, one of the best damn platformers in forever!

No Vita games in the top ten though. I wonder if any is floating around in the top 20? I really wonder about its hardware sales. It probably sold 200K or potentially less.

I'm with Chris on this. I don't remember any "Kirby bomb" comments for this title this year :|

I remember last year with Epic Yarn and how Chris bookmarked a post for eating crow later. People barely knew about the Kirby sales power/legs before but this year I didn't see/remember anything refering to bomb sales.

I don't think anyone said it was an outright bomb this time, but I remember at least one post citing Kirby's sales as an example of Wii software generally underperforming this year. It was a few weeks ago. Not that it matters too much anyway.

Anyway what kind of lifetime sales do you think Kirby Wii will get? 600k? I was expecting around 500k before but it's going to easily beat that.
