Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2011 (Dec 19 - Dec 25)

There are less Wifi models than 3G, but there's plenty out there. Some places have started putting up warning signs saying they are low on Vita stocks -in general- but yeah - if you can't find a Wifi model, you aren't looking very far.

Monster Hunter - lots of places shaving the price down a bit so anyone who was umm-ing and ah-ing is almost certain to jump in. Sales have a LONG LONG way to go yet, got this one hilariously wrong - but thrilled for it to be doing so well.

I walked into a Geo that had both models in stock all last week, and then finally picked a wifi one up Saturday @ 1am. When I returned the next morning to buy a game (LoA) both the wifi model and the gam were sold out. Wonder if they shipped more 3G models thinking the hype would sell them even at the higher price.

I would guess they shipped more 3g models because they can only afford to sell a certain percentage at $250, similar to how they limited the supply of the cheaper PS3's at launch.

Even the people that brought us $599 can't be that clueless to think that the Vita would sell out at the current pricing after what happened with the 3DS.

3DS basically sold through its initial shipment first week and had a strong second week.

3DS didn't launch against a 15000Y competitor and 3 million selling games. That's why he is saying that Sony is pretty delusional trying to sell more 30000Y models now, with no memory card included, after the 3DS had a not so great launch period.

How the fuck did Mario Kart DS sneak into the top 50, no way 3DS owners are buying it
30+ million DS owners who don't have it yet
Stuff like Kirby, Pokemon and other DS games makes sense to see a increase because of the lack of 3DS games for those franchises. A huge selling DS game who's sequel just came out is pretty shocking.
With a game like Mario Kart DS, I think it's more the case that it was rarely very out of the Top 50. I mean, it even popped up into the Famitsu Top 30 earlier in 2011.

Right, I do think there is a serious market for dedicated handhelds in the region.

I mean, one glance at the OP states that much.

First info from December suggests a similar explosion in Europe and especially America. In the end it's a matter of software. If there are games people want to play on them handhelds will survive. Either way they never dominated in west the way they dominate in Japan and this won't change.

One question: who did Xillia? What Tales of team? Is it possible to see this year another main entry? I'm wondering if they'll skip this year, since there's no news at all about it, and last year we already knew the name for the next Tales of, after a 4 months countdown :lol

Xillia was mainly by people who made Hearts and Vesperia, IIRC.

They're supposed to announce the next Tales games after Innocence/Twin Brave in June at the Tales of Festival, maybe before then. No way they'll go a year without more Tales games! :p

Eh, 43k 3 years almost 4 years after its debut. Legs, legs and legs. And it seems MK7 is followings his father's steps :p

[NDS] Mario Kart DS (Nintendo) - 224.411 / 3.837.894 / 6,05% 08/12/05
[SFC] Super Mario Kart (Nintendo) - / 3.820.000 27/08/92
[WII] Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo) - 608.147 / 3.298.179 / 18,44% 10/04/08
[N64] Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo) - 160.363 / 1.711.661 / 9,37% 14/12/96
[3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) - 451.932 / 1.082.391 / 41,75% 01/12/11
[GBA] Mario Kart: Super Circuit (Nintendo) - 261.797 / 938.175 / 27,90% 21/07/01
[GCN] Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (Nintendo) - 179.230 / 825.894 / 21,70% 07/11/03

I keep forgetting how big the original Super Mario Kart was and assume that the crazy sales started with MK DS. Still impressive that it finally managed to outsell it though

If they announce it for this year, then we have THE PS3 game for 2012.

...Unless they announce it for another platform...

Probably an expanded Xillia for Wii U launch window. Tales fans already pointed out the beta-positioning in the PS3 version where 2 extra characters would slot in.

And after Tales of Graces F, Tales of Xillia U!
This, or a brand new main for PS3 or 3DS. Not both this year, however.

I can see them porting Xillia to Vita. I'd rather they made a Xillia 2 on Vita or something, but this is Scamco.

The next mainline Tales has likely been in development since 2009 or 2010, so I don't think it's likely to be a Wii U game (at least not exclusively), and I'm not sure how enthusiastic they are about doing mainline games for handhelds nowadays. I think it's a pretty safe bet that the next mainline game will be on the PS3, exclusive or not.

An Xillia Director's Cut is possible, maybe even likely/guaranteed based on recent info. That's the most I could see them putting on the Wii U, though I figured that would also be something for the PS3.

If they're making it, Radiant Mythology 4 should also be around in late 2012/early 2013. It'll be interesting to see if they'll stick with Sony and go with the PSP/Vita, or make the jump to Nintendo's handheld.

...But now, thinking better about Namco's policy with Tales of, they've never ported the newest installments from the console where the game can sell more due to the one where it sell less.
Symphonia passed from Gamecube to PS2, Vesperia from 360 to PS3, Graces from Wii to PS3.
So, it isn't so obvious seein a Xillia U / V. At least this year. And there's always a possibility that all brings to Xillia DC ( Director's Cut)

Honestly I still have a hard time understand Namco's strategy with their Tales games. At this point, why not make them multiplat from the get-go? It works pretty well for other series.

So what's gonna happen when the vita does better than 72k in this week's numbers? Is it gonna be un-doomed?

I don't see it happening, Week 52 is generally a quieter week than 51. The only reason it would go up would be if it was supply constrained, and I don't think that's the case. I expect something around 50k.

January 2nd seems to be a very big day for sales.

When Jan. 2 fell in Week 52 of '04 and it beat Week 1 of '05. And when Jan. 2 was in Week 53 of '09 it beat Week 1 of '10.

Good analysis! Yep, that's probably it with New Year's money being spent the next day when shops are open again. Therefore, this year should be very standard, since Jan. 1 is on a Sunday, and Jan. 2 starts a new week. :)

So if all hardware is expected to sell less, and the vita goes on to sell less that'd just be par for the course.

If it's like 50K or above, yeah. Anything lower could still be raising eyebrows, though. 72K for this week was just out of left field.

Making them multiplatform from the get-go would actually get them less sales though.

I thought about this as well but Namco has stated that the extra content couldn't be fitted into the PS3 version. If it is indeed space related going from 50 GB to 25 GB might not be feasible.

On the other hand they might just be creating a pretense for the expected rerelease, whereever they plan to put it. Maybe looking at the Xilia Blu-ray might give an indication for what the actual reason is.

Probably an expanded Xillia for Wii U launch window.

What could possibly possess even Namco to release the expanded version of Xillia on anything but PS3? I mean I'm honestly confused about this entire conversation, I can't even start to see a reason they'd give WiiU a chance here.

I thought about this as well but Namco has stated that the extra content couldn't be fitted into the PS3 version.

Well, that's definitely bullshit on their part, as I am sure we will discover when the expanded PS3 version comes out with extra content and nothing cut out or reduced in quality. :p

Looking at the Blu-ray it could be confirmed/disproved now. Someone with the game and a Blu-ray drive on their PC could check.

Would it really be that dramatic? Xillia sold nearly as well as Graces + Graces F combined didn't it?

It would decrease the importance of the entry, making it sell less than what it would sell only on PS3, at this point, IMHO.

If the team has maintained the separations, a brand new main Tales of should happen. Where?

1) PS3: 600k+ copies of Xillia aren't a message that cryptic to understand

But there'a another possibility

2) 3DS: IIRC, Abyss was announced in September 2010, right? So, Tales of teams should have 3DS dev kits from more than a year...considering this next entry would be released at least at the end of Q3, that would be 2 years of development, which sounds right for a well-developed entry on a handled. And it would be the right time to release it, seeing how well 3DS is doing and should do even this year.

About when datas will come, I hope that, as happened last week, we'll get everything in time. :p

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I have a feeling the US will get the director's cut of Xillia... And the next Tales game will be by the Destiny team.

I thought about this as well but Namco has stated that the extra content couldn't be fitted into the PS3 version. If it is indeed space related going from 50 GB to 25 GB might not be feasible.

Thing is, Tales of Xillia is less than 8 GB on PS3. Even less than Tales of Graces f.

It's probably difficult to come up with a truly correct answer, but which scenario would make Namco more money?

1) Selling 600K+ copies on PS3
or
2) Selling 300K+ copies on 3DS

Bare in mind the cost of development etc.
